Christmas Eve Rangers stuff

Largely quiet day today.

Chuck Greenberg calls the rumor that his bid to buy the Rangers is in trouble because of financing issues "ridiculous."

Anthony Andro writes that Darren Oliver is a good fit for the Rangers, who wanted an effective veteran for their bullpen.

Getting ready...

to head up to Idaho. This year Xmas is with the wife’s family. Can’t say I’m really looking forward to it either. I always got to stay home and just do Christmas with my immediate family growing up. No aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, et al. I always though Christmas was much better that way than dealing with extended family drama.

Oh well, I don’t know what to say, except it’s Christmas and we’re all in misery. Merry Christmas LSBers.

For your morning reading

The last couple of days I’ve been in Pittsburgh, working on some things related to the Chuck Greenberg/Nolan Ryan bid. This morning, we posted a column:

We’ll have more on Greenberg and his approach later in the process.

And to every one of you: the happiest of holiday seasons! (Please note that I do not throw exclamation points around willy-nilly). Thanks for reading and interacting with me. It’s been a most interesting and challenging year for me and for the local media and it was an incredibly fun year to be a Ranger fan. Hopefully, we’ll meet all the challenges and the Rangers will continue to improve and 2010 will be an even better year for everyone.

Thanks again.

A's, Duchscherer agree on 2010 deal

link

Free agent Justin Duchscherer will be returning for a seventh season with the Oakland A’s, agreeing in principle Thursday on a one-year deal that could be worth $5.5 million if he reaches his incentives

If he ends up being anywhere near the pitcher he was before surgery, this just makes the division that much tougher.

I'm just about ready for them to go ahead and sign someone like Garko.

At least we’ll have someone in who we know will be healthy and fill the dh/backup 1b role. I thought they might swing a trade after signing Olive, but now I don’t see it. They probably want as many good relievers as they can get, considering the youth/health concerns of the starters. I can’t believe McCarthy or Harrison will fetch much, and I don’t want them to trade CJ. Besides, a “productive” bat probably has a contract we can’t afford.

I don't think they will do that until vlad/dye are gone.

JD just said they wanted to add a “presence” into the lineup and along with the right-handed part.. those seem like the only two he could be targeting.

We need to ask some sox fans what was up with dye in the second half.. theres a slow second half and then theres a .590 ops.

But yeah, Garko would fit the needs pretty well even if its not exciting, and is probably a pretty good bet for the next option.

the preceding post was a great success.

How many full time DH jobs are there out there for him to pick and choose from?

He’s an aging player coming off a lost season. A one year deal with a low base + incentives is all he’s likely to get anywhere, and we can at least guarantee him consistent AB’s.

Also, last year’s salary is irrelevant in determining a player’s worth on the current FA market.
