Velazquez or Wieland here

I have to give the edge to Wieland mainly based on age, and Wieland played at the higher level this past year. Wieland still has plenty of upside.

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

I don't know...

Parity seems to be setting in. I’ve been voting Tommy Mendonca, whose numbers (especially college) definitely deserve a look over, but I think you are really overvaluing the number 19 spot. I would probably vote for Wilfredo Boscan, Miguel Velazquez, Michael Kirkman, Edwin Escobar, Richard Alvarez, Joe Wieland, Carlos Pimentel, Robbie Erlin, Kennil Gomez, and a handful of others before Eric Hurley. But head-to-head against any one of those guys, Hurley stands a solid chance of turning out to be the better pro. I mean, realistically, how many future major leaguers do you think a minor league system will have at any given time?

Frankie Francisco. C.J. Wilson. Neftali Feliz. Darren O'Day. Pedro Strop.

by YourNameHere on Dec 27, 2009 7:02 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe it's just compensation bias due to the way Thomas Diamond flamed out

But I’d just like to see Hurley prove he’s healthy again before we go slotting him ahead of most of those guys you mentioned. Torn labrums aren’t exactly TJ surgery, and Hurley was kinda lackluster at AAA even before the injury. He’s more of a wildcard than a prospect heading into 2010, IMO.

by LSJ on Dec 27, 2009 7:16 PM CST up reply actions

He's 24 years old

This is the first time he’s actually had a significant injury and the team says his rehab is on track and that he is looking fine. Out of all the guys on the list, Hurley has the best chance of being a solid Major Leaguer, injury and all. His “lackluster” performance at AAA didn’t scare me off when KoK kept bringing it up the past couple of seasons and I haven’t changed my opinion on that since.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Yeah, 24 years old

25 in September, and he’s gonna spend at least the first half of this season just getting re-acclimated to pitching if not the entire year. I’m not fanatical about it like KoK, but it certainly is worth noting he was still in the process of learning to make adjustments pitching at the higher levels when he was injured, and now he has to do it all over again while recovering from a labrum problem.

Color me extremely cautious.

I think he was just working on weaknesses

Like a lot of young prospects do once they get into the upper levels. You learn what you can’t do to survive in the Majors and work on fixing that. The stats will suffer as a result, but he was looking pretty good in that brief ML stint. Not TORP good, but more than a Doug Mathis/Luis Mendoza type.

As for the injury, again, until the team says something or we see that he isn’t on the recovery track, I’m putting my faith in the Rangers medical staff knowing what they are doing over the people here who are just assuming he’s fucked for good.

Velazquez for me

In 375 career plate appearances, Velazquez has gone 306/368/507 which is superior to what other five-tool prospects like Dexter Fowler, Michael Saunders, Josh Reddick, and Greg Halman had done before their breakout seasons in the Cal League. Assuming Velazquez starts 2010 in the Cal League as a 21 year old, then he will be right where you would expect him to be if he hadn’t lost a couple of years to legal troubles. Given how easily other Rangers’ prospects have transitioned to Bakersfield (and given that Velazquez has displayed a solid plate approach), it would not be a surprise to see him go 300/375/525, receive recognition as a Top 20 prospect in the Cal League, and get at least a mention from BA in the 2011 Top 100 list.

by spurdynasty on Dec 27, 2009 9:21 PM CST reply actions

I don't think it matters where he starts

lowA or High A as he will end up starting off 2011 in AA if his development continues apace – think Moreland and Smitty here who both were kept in LowA for a whole year but only got a cup of coffee in HighA before quickly moving to AA. I think TX thinks levels in 2-yr increments with their hitters at least so some may start out higher or lower than we expect but they weill all end up where they should end up if they develop the way the staff thinks they will. I used to think that someone like Moe and Smitty got held in LowA too long because of this dumb pop-psychological theory that was going around last year (since instructs really) about “building a winner” or some BS. However, now I think that if a player is kept at a level longer than seems appropriate (at least for hitters) where there is space to promote them, then they are being kept there deliberately, to work on aspects of their game that the org feels is best for them to do at that level. There is always a reason based in improving a skill set rather than something else.

That is a really supermega long way of saying, don’t expect talent to be the primary basis for assigning players to the various full-season leagues next year, rather, think: 1. if that player needs to work on critical weaknesses that will be difficult to overcome at a higher level (Velazquez is a good bet to fit this category and start the first couple months in Hickory, while Macumba and Leury will like repeat); 2. likelihood of a quick promotion to free up space throughout the system. For example, I have most of the Hickory rotation from 2009 repeating while some of the older pitchers start off in High A as they will likely be quickly promoted. This in turn will allow for guys like Font, NeRa, Boscon, Pimentel to move into HighA after dealing what one would hope will be some dominant stuff in their brief Hickory repeat.

Just a moosing if you will…

Eddy Escobar.

Though really you could go with any number of dudes here.

Sardinas, Pimentel, Wieland, Velazquez, Alvarez, Boscan, Erlin, Lemon, Mendonca, Thompson, ,etc.

I do think it’s pretty hilarious that Sardinas is gonna end up rated 10-15 slots lower than Profar… why, exactly? The guy got a bonus of around 1.5mm, which is at or just below what Profar got depending on who you listen to, but suddenly Profar is the shit covered popsicle we all dream about in our sex fantasies, and Sardinas is ugly and fat and rides a Vespa to work.

by thedirkatron on Dec 27, 2009 9:32 PM CST reply actions

yep

zero sense. If anyone ever bothered to ask JD a chat question about Sardinas, I bet you’d hear the same accolades for the kid who deserves to be ranked the same as JPro if not better. I’ve tried. The rumor is that TX really bid vs themselves for JPro as Balt was the only other team who would contemplate letting him start out at short but TX was the only team that would consider him only at short. So he got paid but got paid too much in my book. So, until he shows he can outplay the pure VZ shortstop in Sardinas – by some accounts the third best shortstop in this year’s J2 class behind Iglesias (whose really in his own class as a 19yo) and Vinicio (to boston for 2 million) I have Sardinas ranked higher than the small island part-time shortstop.

by Goyogringo on Dec 27, 2009 11:16 PM CST up reply actions

A couple of points on Profar....

He’s way too high on this list, IMO, but the Rangers seem to think Profar’s development is ahead of Sardinas because they believe Profar’s bat his far ahead and they believe he has unusual baseball acumen, potentially allowing him to grow his game at an unusually rapid pace. At least, that is what I’ve pieced together from chat session and interviews with JD and others.

The potential for growth is a factor to consider when ranking prospects at this level in particular, IMO, so I would lean toward having Profar ahead of Sardinas at this point, despite the well reported true SS skill set of Sardinas. I probably have Profar as the highest ranked FA signing from last year (though I remain highly intrigued by David Perez), and I think he would be in the 20-25 range.

I agree with you below, however, that it would be a shock to see Profar in Hickory ahead of either Garcia.

Give me the dumb athlete

with 4 plus tools over the leader with 2. Really though anything about these two is just hype for 16yo. The only objective measure for ranking either of them is their signing bonus. 1.5 millions is equivalent to about the 20th pick in the first round and I think the consensus for a pick in that area of the draft is that they would fall in the 15-30 range in any system. So for me it doesnt matter where you put them as long as they fall somewhere in this range; the reports on either are too piecemeal and anecdotal to make any other cliam about them. I will say this: Venezuelan players almost always have a more advanced skill set than Dominican players and that is enough for me to rank them 1A/!B, Sardinas, Profar.

As for Perez, as a general principle I only rank 16yo Latin American signs against one another until they make there stateside debut unless they are a consensus top 30 player (per multiple sources and signing bonus). There simply is no reliable measure to compare them to US high school players based on the lack of data and the vastly different levels of competition between various countries (just ask Abreu). Perez is not one of those players. I am intrigued by him due to at least one positive report on his breaking stuff and his tall lanky frame which is ideal for thrower hard(er). Other than that, it will be a couple of years. Based on the stateside rookie debut’s of Alvarez and Escobar last year, he could make a debut in the AZL in 2010 as well but there may simply may be zero space for him (and pitching in the DSL rookie squad won’t hurt his development as he can be sure to get get his innings there and a lot more 1-1 attention as well). Second year players Randol Rojas (DSL co-pitcher of the year), Leonel Gil, and Jose Mavare are the DSL pitchers to watch in AZL next year (perhaps even spokane).

So, we have slightly different emphasis when ranking these extremely long shot prospects. The only quibble

I might have is I think of $1.5M bonus for latin american prospects as more of a 2nd round US draft bonus, under the assumption that low 1st rounders would have bonuses significantly higher than present should they be in a free agent pool.

Sardinas

I haven’t kept up with the voting so far at all but Profar at #11 and Sardinas not being on the list so far is puzzling. I think next year around this time they will be ranked closely together.

Well, on that topic, Rangers probably have a top half AL rotation, going by FIP.

That’s a step in the right direction for sure. Far, far from the top rotation. If things go very, very well, they could be a top 5 rotation in 2011.

Edwin "Easy Eddie" Garcia should be on this list

Advanced defensive skill set (even got a few games in at HighA – did you hear that Telis?), nice physical projection (did you hear that Telis!), good hitter with very good gap power (led the AZL in TB thru the first 6-7 weeks before he swooned and Telis made his push)- best shortstop prospect in the system last year. Leury isn’t ever likely to hit and his hands and transfer were surprisingly suspect last year notwithstanding his great arm, range and blazing speed. Yeah, Easy Eddie should definitely be on this list. You heard it here first: Aint’ no way Sardinas or JPro beat out either of the Garcia brothers for a spot on the Hickory roster in 2010. I think you’ll see Easy Eddie move from extended to Hickory after a couple of months even if Leury fails to get the promotion (same with Telis/Macumba).

by chrisR on Dec 28, 2009 2:14 AM CST reply actions

It's not really that it's slim pickings, we're just at a point where nobody knows who to really vote for.

At this point we’ve got a mix of old favorites who haven’t gotten on yet because they underperformed, where injured or weren’t Blake Beavan, 2009 draft picks, and raw, slightly obscure yet extremely talented names like Miggy Velazquez.

Most of us really have no solid idea what order these guys should go in or how to evaluate them in contrast with one another, and as a result these polls are kind of disintegrating into what feels like a disarray.

Agreed...

The nature of the beast suggests that the further along we go, the more red flags will be found amongst the candidates.

But the candidates include several guys on the 40-Man Roster (Eric Hurley, Michael Kirkman, Zach Phillips, Craig Gentry, Ben Snyder, along with the currently unlisted Greg Golson and Warner Madrigal), a handful of guys that Baseball America recognized in the Top-20 of their respective leagues after 2009 (Tommy Mendonca, Miguel Velazquez, Richard Alvarez, and Braden Tullis), as well as some similarly recognized after 2008 (Wilfredo Boscan, Joe Wieland, along with the currently unlisted Neil Ramirez, Tim Murphy and Clark Murphy). There are also a bunch of starting pitchers who are intriguing to me, such as Carlos Pimentel, Kennil Gomez, Carlos Melo, Edwin Escobar, Andrew Doyle and Robert Erlin. I don’t really know how to rank shortstop Luis Sardinas, but fellow position players Leonel De Los Santos, Edwin Garcia and Leury Garcia are definitely guys I think are worth tracking.

There are plenty of guys who I think have much better chances than the guys that we’re talking about now, but the odds are that a few of the guys still on the board will have major league careers and that many of the guys already voted onto the list won’t ever make it.

I don't mind runoffs...

I don’t mind runoffs, it’s just that I think that it was done poorly last time. When we were voting for number 12, there was a runoff between Max Ramirez and Blake Beavan. Ramirez got more votes in the head-to-head vote, and as a result, Ramirez became number 12 and Beavan number 13.

I think Ramirez should have been made 12 and then we should have proceeded to vote for number 13 with Beavan as one of the candidates. The way the runoff was done suggests that we could have just voted once and ranked 1-25 (or 1-30 if that’s what we wanted) based on those results.
