Finally!

We need someone to articulate a good question regarding Cruz, Borbon, and defense, preferably ajm.

I think it’s important that we get an answer to the most vital question facing the Rangers- when we gonna get some pitching in here?

Evan Grant: Daniels also said the Rangers now have the flexibility to sign major league players – within the team’s undisclosed budget – and he hopes to “get some business done” during the next week to 10 days.

This is interesting.

I can think of three possibilities:

1. JD is correcting media misinformation.
2. JD is creating media misinformation.
3. The interest holders agreed that not spending money this offseason could cause the franchise to lose value due to underperformance next season, so the parties agreed to a budget. I wouldn’t be surprised if the buyers were told that they will have to contribute an extra $10 million or whatever into escrow before the start of the season to cover the expanded budget.

Also, it’s clear now the Rangers don’t have any intention of playing Josh Hamilton in center field. Marlon Byrd remains an option and the Rangers have been pleased with Julio Borbon’s progress. Borbon is playing center field in the Dominican Republic and Gary Pettis is down there right now watching and working with him.

Jon Daniels:
At the time we felt his defense was worth keeping him up & giving him a chance to work with Rudy to improve offensively. Obviously that didn’t happen – he needed to clear his head and try some different things which he was able to do in OKC. In hindsight, we may have waited a few weeks longer than we should have, though there were occassional signs he was improving and we were hoping he’d build on them. The alternative wasn’t idel either, unfortunately.

One of the very best defensive 3B I've seen (probably as good as Buddy Bell)

but absolutely the worst player when you really needed a clutch hit.

When golfing with my buddies, if somebody misses a crucial putt that’s a four hole carry-over on the 17th to lose the hole but comes back to birdie the 18th hole, he is referred to as “Buechele.”

CJ

JD said flat out that CJ would come to spring training as a starter. Has that been verified before? I know it had been thrown as a possible plan, but I hadn’t seen it stated that black and white anywhere.

No, he wasn't that clear cut

Jon Daniels:
It’s all going to be about what’s best for the club. What do we need more – a dominant left handed reliever, or a quality starter? Let’s see how the club shapes up after the winter. We’re going to be open minded to going either direction based on our needs.

by bdk03a on Dec 3, 2009 11:27 AM CST up reply actions

well....

I just don’t get this fascination with CJ and the rotation. We’ve got like 10 candidates for next years rotation. do we need more? Millwood, Feldman, Hunter, Holland, Feliz, Harrison, McCarthy, Hurley, Nippert, Moscoso? plus dark horses like Mendoza or guys we could sign like Sheets or Lackey….. If I’m JD I say to CJ, “Look, you had a great year as a setup man. You’re a great reliever. You can remain a reliever for the next 30 years if you stay in shape and keep getting guys out. Why push it?”

by iblum on Dec 3, 2009 12:28 PM CST up reply actions

Its about cost.

If we have to spend bucks to sign Darrin Oliver because CJ wants to play starter for his next contract, then I’m pissed. Of course, JD wants a second lefty in the pen anyway, and if he does sign Oliver, I’d expect him to be more inclined to let CJ take a turn at the rotation. If he signs Sheets, however, CJ goes back to the pen to stay.

by iblum on Dec 3, 2009 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

If we bring in another reliever

Its going to be on an NRI or something extremely cheap. JD has shown that he isn’t going to spend much on relievers unless they are good trade candidates for next season.

Following up on the earlier Chris Davis question, how do you evaluate his return? Yes, the strikeouts were down but on September 20 he was still hitting only .214 with a .264 obp and paltry .582 ops. Those numbers were helped a great deal by several infield hits. The rest of the season was garbage time. Did Chris Davis really show enough progress to feel better about in 2010?

Obviously he struggled & we need more from him and out of 1B this year. He understands that. I expect to see him build on the adjustments he made at OKC last year. And he understands there will be competition for his spot on the club.

I think it’s important because Davis doesn’t seem like the type of player who can depend on getting 60 infield hits/season.

I quit counting after he got 7(which was mid September) and didn’t see every moment of every game afterwards…I do know he got a squirrelly little hit that somehow spun past Aybar in either the Friday/Saturday game v the Angels that was scored as a “double” and probably didn’t travel more than 160 feet.

I’ll settle for 8 so you don’t have to worry about the number expanding and it doesn’t change my thought process regarding Davis because I don’t view him as the kind of hitter who will get 50 infield hits per season.

Just pick a number and stick to it. Your stupid argument of infield hits has taken place during the offseason so unless you are still getting caught up on old games on your TIVO, shut up and pick a number of infield hits to stick with.

8 infield hits after August 25 is good enough for me.

Let’s also remember that I’m rooting for Davis to get his act together and show steady progress from the foundation he set in 2008.

To me, CDavis is still a mystery and requires (vomit) hope. He’s nothing we can count on to improve in 2010.

Is there a game log defining what are being ruled "infield hits"?

He hit that “double” against the Angels (it was the Saturday game) that had funky spin on it that Aybar overran. The ball went 160 feet so it probably wasn’t ruled an infield it.

Davis also hit a ball on September 1 to 1B that went under Overbay’s glove yet was ruled a single (with 2 RBI). I saw it in person and thought it was dubious and then heard Nadel saying afterwards that he could not believe that Davis was given a single.

I guess I’m getting tripped up here by lawyers (who scrutinize every fucking word I write), their technicalities and their precious loopholes who want to say a line drive is the same as a 160 foot cue shot with funky english on it.

OJ still murdered his wife and a ball that goes under Overbay’s glove that is ruled a hit doesn’t change the fact that the numbers of CDavis upon his return were propped up by a lot of bullshit SSS luck.

every single player’s hit distribution and determine whether a hit was an actual line drive or not, this all just more of your bull shit to avoid saying that you are wrong. If MLB calls the "double" that Davis hit in the LAAA game

a non-infield hit that’s a loophole in logic in what they call an infield hit.

The point being is that nobody should be seduced by the numbers Davis put up from August 25 forward because those numbers are filled with a lot of bullshit hits.

and not just from August 25th. Davis had 7 IFHs last season, not all of those happened from August 25th to the end of the season. He had 50 line drive hits last season, again not all at the end of the season. The Great Hank Blalock War of June 2009 was fought and won. Several people are still trying to defend the performance of Davis.

Impossible job. He absolutely sucked and is one of the biggest reasons we fell short.

Moving forward, it’s time to find out what Chris Davis can do in 2010 and I’m hoping he’s much more 2008 than he was in the first half of 2009.

I think the player we saw that came back was closer to the early 2009 version than the 2008 version and the number of bullshit hits he had to prop up his numbers didn’t fool me.

And conversely...

….if you are going to discount certain hits, you must give extra weight to other hits. You can’t have it simply one way.

by FuturePants on Dec 3, 2009 12:31 PM CST up reply actions

Why do you care so much?

first off, if you really want to do that, you need to determine the difference between ALL of his stats pre-demotion vs post demotion. saying he had 11 infield hits and 13 other ground ball hits (including 2 doubles) means little if you are talking about his season because he simply wasn’t right in the first half of the year. But, I will say that his BABIP in the first half was a paltry .287, vs a .347 in the second half. Much of that is because of his prodigous strikeout rate.

by iblum on Dec 3, 2009 12:51 PM CST up reply actions

except

babip is only on balls in play. a strikeout is not a ball in play, therefore has nothing to do with babip

by Fireal20 on Dec 3, 2009 12:52 PM CST up reply actions

he historically has had a higher babip

which does show he was making progress with hitting the ball more square.

Fangraphs, I think has a mistake in Chris Davis’ 2007 stint in AA. They have his BABIP at .286 and his AVG at .294. How is that possible?

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

by NothinG on Dec 3, 2009 12:59 PM CST up reply actions

they did make a mistake.

doing some rough calculations:

124 PA’s. 12 homers. 13 walks 27 strikeouts. and one hit by pitch.
that’s 53 PA’s where the ball didn’t end up in play.

39 of those were at bats. he hit 12 balls out of the park and struck out 27 times. that’s a BABIP of .308

by iblum on Dec 3, 2009 1:11 PM CST up reply actions

and bad calculations.

BABIP = (H-HR)/(AB-HR-K) = (32-12)/(109-12-27) = 20/70 = .286

basically, by hitting lots of homers, you reduce your BABIP.

overall in the minors his BABIP = (370-80)/(1210-80-327) = 290/803 = .361

by iblum on Dec 3, 2009 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

Airspeed velocity

In order for Davis to have maintained his batting average with such a ridiculous strikeout rate, he would have to either hit 70 homers, or have a really high BABIP. He can do this by hitting fewer balls on the ground and more line drives.

some stats: (noting that these are full season stats)
on at bats where the ball did not end up in play: .123/.239/.491 (21 homers, 150 k’s, 24 walks).
the rest: .327/.324/.405 (56 singles, 15 doubles, 1 triple, 2 sac flies, 2 errors, 146 other outs)
3 of those outs were on foul balls.
6 were double plays.
66 were ground ball outs.
66 were fly ball outs.
14 were line drives that were caught.

What about all the line drives that were right at people that would normally or should have been hits and most likely extra base hits?

I think in the end those even out the weak infield hits and we just have to look at his overall numbers

I don't even understand what "garbage time" means with regard to baseball.

Do pitchers stop trying at some point in the season? This isn’t the NBA or NFL where you put in lesser players during a blowout. Chris was facing the same pitchers the rest of the team faced. Did everyone show similar improvement?

Its Josey's way of discounting stats he doesn't like.

Basically since Davis’s last streak of the year started late in the season it doesn’t count since there was no pressure on.

What do voluntary mean?

it's great to joke around here

but it kinda sucks that the GM of the team is able to take 30 minutes to have dialogue with the fans and any portion of that time is watered down with dumb schtick.

Poor Josey

your questions may have been phrased proffesionally, but you got pwned anyway. and What did Davis ever do to you? egg your car? paper your house? what does it matter who’s the guy who hits 35 homers for the rangers at first next year. Davis or Smoak?

Jon Daniels:

We’re going to develop Tanner as a starter. He might make an impact in the bullpen at some point like Feliz did, this year but we’d like to see if he can have a similar impact in the rotation. We’re going to put a specific program together for him this year considering what he’s been through the past 2 years. Our goal is to have him healthy and successful at the end of the season.

11:11 [Comment From RangerFloppy RangerFloppy : ]
What is the plan for Jurickson Profar next year? I understand he is very young, but this system has precedent for moving young players to leagues where they are well below the average competition age. Will we see him stateside in 2010?

11:11 Jon Daniels:
He’ll play in the States & get a chance to compete for a full-season team.

They want to start him at Clinton? I believe he’d be younger than Martin?

Younger than Martin

So, younger than Martin was at Clinton I mean.

Too tired to look up Profar’s birthday. Seems incredibly aggressive skipping a teenager past short-season or even DSL though.

I came on to point that out this morning

They must be REALLY high on the skillz and makeup of one Profar, Jurickson.

I already love this kid and I wouldn’t know him if he walked in my front door.

Yeah, if that did happen

it would certainly be aggressive and say a lot about what they think of his potential. Personally, I’d prefer he not go any farther than short season, at least to start the year. If he does well you can always promote him.

short season doesn't start until July practically

I think they give him the chance to start in Hickory and if he fails then you send him back to Arizona until short season starts. If he doesn’t then we are looking really really good. He would be an amazing trade chip if he develops over the next couple years
