Jesus Mike

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

seems like it though. MJ, Ted Kennedy, Patrick Swayze, John Hughes, Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, Ron Silver, Steve McNair and of course Marilyn Chambers. And for you wrestling fans out there, did you know “Umaga” died? I just saw that. A heart attack the beginning of December.

I know a lot of people die every year, just seems like a few more recognizable names this year than most. A lot of those names aren’t exactly from old age either.

I can just see Soriano and Byrd chasing down a flyball in left center and crashing into each other, taking each other out for 3 months. That’s the Cubs luck.

Oh wait, that would require some sort of effort or hustle from Soriano. Nevermind.

Onley

thinks the Padres will see what they canget for Gonzalez at the trade dealine.

The Padres will, “in all likelihood,” gauge the market for Adrian Gonzalez this summer and deal him before the July 31st trade deadline. The Mets, Mariners and Red Sox could all bid for the slugger, but the list of suitors could change drastically by mid-summer

He is signed through 2011..

10:$4.75M, 11:$5.5M club option (no buyout)

IF the ownership situation is resolved by then and IF the rangers are in contention, trading for Adrian would make one hell of a splash for the new owner.

Davis, Font, Kiker, and another prospect for AG?

by AceJC on Dec 31, 2009 2:36 PM CST up reply actions

Unless the other prospect is Perez...

…or Font or Kiker make a Hollandesque leap in the first half of the season, that isn’t going to be near enough.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 31, 2009 2:40 PM CST up reply actions

Why not?

Look what we got for Teixeira.

Feliz: Amazing arm but was still in rookie ball
Andrus: 18 year old struggling a little in High A but with amazing upside
Salty: young catcher who was rushed to the big leagues but with upside
Harrison: MORP lefty in AA at the time
Jones: LOOGY potential still in A ball at the time

Now imagine if we packaged something like

Smoak: (comparable to Salty) young with a ton of upside at a position they will need to replace
Font: (comparable to Feliz) Young amazing arm but will be in High A most likely at midseason
Profar: (comparable to Andrus) Young, slick SS with amazing upside but will be in rookie or Low A at midseason
Kiker/Kirkman (comparable to Harrison) MORP Lefties in AA or AAA

Atlanta got Teixeira without touching their top notch prospects (Heyward, Schafer, Hansen) so I think we could do a package without giving up Perez, Scheppers, Feliz, or Holland although yeah I imagine they will ask for those guys.

|Space for Rent|

by RangerMad on Dec 31, 2009 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

I think Smoak/Font/Profar

Is pretty damn good quality

I imagine however it will come down to how the Padres want to address things. If they are in full blown rebuild and want to see young guys right away then they won’t want someone like Font who is a year or two out and Profar who is 3 years at the minimum out. When we made our trade we could afford to go a year or two before seeing the results in the majors because our owner had committed to the full out rebuild and expectations were lowered considerably

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Dec 31, 2009 3:15 PM CST up reply actions

Profar v. Andrus

Remember what Jules said about comparing a foot massage to putting your tongue in the holiest of holies?

That’s what it is like, comparing Andrus in 2007 to Profar in 2010.

Not the same ballpark, the same league, the same effin sport.

And Davis is either going to be hitting well enough that you aren’t going to trade for Gonzalez (or at least, aren’t going to include him in the trade) because the upgrade isn’t significant enough, or he’s going to have not near the trade value Salty did.

If you want to put Smoak in the deal, and say Smoak, Font, Kiker, and something else, that’s different. But even then, Kiker isn’t Harrison, Kirkman isn’t close to Harrison, and you still don’t have an Andrus equivalent.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 31, 2009 6:23 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Id say Kiker is a pretty decent comp for Harison

Not great but pretty close. Both spent their age 21 seasons in AA posting sub 4 ERAs (Harrison was 3.36, Kiker 3.86). Harrison had better control but Kiker strikes out more guys.

I should have worded the comps better as well. Basically we got a guy who was in High A and had amazing upside and a guy in Rookie ball also with amazing upside both of whom had a ways to go. Giving up Font and Profar would be close to comparable in that sense just the guy we got in High A was a SS and the guy we would give thats in High A would be the pitcher.

I would say Smoak is a better prospect than Salty was, wasn’t trying to diminish Salty as a prospect, since Smoak is a consensus top 20 in all of baseball while Salty was more in the 50 range IIRC.

Basically Smoak > Salty, Font < Feliz but not by much and at a higher level, Profar <<< Andrus but with similar tools, ceilings, and only one level lower (assuming he starts in Hickory like has been talked about), Kiker < Harrison only due to control but its not a huge gap. So if we threw in one of our other prospects who blew Beau Jones out of the water it could get done.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Also

This is just flat wrong. Heyward had only signed a month before the Teixeira trade, so he wasn’t an option.

The Rangers supposedly could have had either Jordan Schafer or Elvis Andrus, not both, and they took Andrus.

Tommy Hanson was never an option, it doesn’t appear, but you are acting like Saltalamacchia was just some second-tier prospect they had no use for.

The three guys they got were the top three prospects per BA’s top 10 heading into the season, plus Feliz, who was highly regarded.

The Braves absolutely did touch their top notch prospects in the Teixeira trade.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 31, 2009 6:30 PM CST up reply actions

Actually

Hanson didn’t really bust out as an elite prospect until 2008.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 31, 2009 6:38 PM CST up reply actions

How 'bout

Smoak/Davis, CJ, McCarthy, Harrison/Hurley, Font, Kiker, and one other mid-level pitching prospect if they throw in Heath Bell?

by MikeEl on Dec 31, 2009 5:34 PM CST up reply actions

I don't see why San Diego would do that

Also, San Diego has Kyle Blanks coming up, so they’d probably have not much interest in Davis or Smoak. Part of the reason why they could deal Gonzalez is because of Blanks, who really can only play 1B.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 31, 2009 6:24 PM CST up reply actions

It would give them a number of quality ML ready guys

they can fill out their roster with, (which they seem to be lacking). Maybe we could also convince them that Davis can be an everyday 3rd baseman.

by MikeEl on Dec 31, 2009 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

Teams like San Diego

They aren’t looking for roster fillers…they are looking for potential impact players. Plus, C.J. is eligible for free agency at the same time Gonzalez is, and he will make close to the same amount Gonzalez will in 2010, so they’d have to turn around and deal him anyway. Ditto McCarthy, although he won’t make as much as C.J.

Harrison and Hurley have no trade value right now.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 31, 2009 6:31 PM CST up reply actions

A trade for Gonzalez has to have one of Feliz or Holland in it

And then you start adding from there. I guess if you think that Perez has gotten himself into the same level as those you could probably put Perez into the mix also. But one of our top three pitchers pretty much has to be a part. Then probably 3-4 of our next tier. And that might get it done. If he hasn’t moved after the trade deadline then you might be able to get him cheaper next off season, but I’ll bet he moves somewhere at the dead line.

What do voluntary mean?

by JKolar on Dec 31, 2009 7:01 PM CST up reply actions

I think the #1 farm system has enough depth

that they wouldn’t have to give up one of their top 4 (or 5 if you include Holland) to get Gonzalez. A lot will depend on how some players are performing come July. If Kiker and Moreland are handling AAA, then they might be player close to the MLs that SD may want along with some lower prospects like Font, Ross and Main. Muxh will depend on competing offers and how much SD wants quality over quantity.

|Space for Rent|

by RangerMad on Dec 31, 2009 8:24 PM CST up reply actions

Come on

You aren’t being realistic.

You aren’t going to get Gonzalez for a package headlined by Moreland, Kiker and Font.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 31, 2009 8:34 PM CST up reply actions

Knowing what we got for Teixeira

What would SD want/need that is reasonable?

I would imagine they would ask for Perez or Smoak as a headliner but I think we could get it done with Font as the “headliner” and add in several mid-lower tier prospects. Font, Profar, Kiker/Kirkman, plus one or two other guys could be a starting point for negotiations

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Dec 31, 2009 2:07 PM CST up reply actions

Not enough...

Gonzalez is still under control for 2 more years at a total of 10 mil. The Padres will have to be blown away to move him.

I’d say Smoak, Feliz/Holland, Perez, and Moreland may get them to think about it. Or you could try and substitute CD for Smaok and add another prospect like Kiker.

There’s no way they do the deal without any of the big four of Holland, Feliz, Smoak, and Perez. It would cost the Rangers at least 2 of those guys.

"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates

by slc ranger on Dec 31, 2009 2:53 PM CST up reply actions

At midseason it would only be 1.5 years

And like I said above we didn’t get any of the Braves top prospects for Tex, the guys we were most excited about were in the lowest levels of the minors. Look at what Cleveland got for 1.5 years of Cliff Lee. We could do a package without Perez, Scheppers, Holland, or Feliz and still get AGon I believe
