Friday a.m. Rangers things

I already covered the Galloway column on the ownership situation last night, so I'm not going to re-hash that again.  But realistically, the ownership situation is the story this offseason.  Everything else, until that is resolved, is pretty much secondary, since so much is in limbo until it is determined who the new owner is going to be and how much that owner is going to authorize be spent.

Jeff Wilson runs down the Rangers' possible targets at the winter meetings, although again, the market is likely to be slow, and the Rangers aren't likely to do anything significant until the ownership situation is resolved.

Wilson also writes about Steve Beuchele taking over as manager for Frisco in 2010, along with other items discussed by Jon Daniels in a press conference yesterday.

T.R. Sullivan says that the Rangers' payroll is likely to go down in 2010 from 2009, at least until the ownership situation is resolved, and runs down what he thinks the team should look like if the Rangers simply signed no one this offseason.  The Rangers, of course, signed no major league free agents last offseason, although they added Omar Vizquel and Andruw Jones (among others) on minor league deals.

Richard Durrett thinks C.J. Wilson should be a starter.

Ownership

The mid-December timing is just for Hicks, MLB, the banks, et al., to select and agree on the winning bid. It will then take several months for the MLB and NHL approval processes to be completed.

Maybe this is a special situation, but I would surprised if the ownership change has much impact on this offseason. I think it’s more realistic to hope that it’s completed by the spring so the team could have the flexibility to add someone during the season if needed.

Right, but....

the prior owner was solvent and signed off on the deal. Had the deal fallen through or not been approved, Bob Lurie would have been on the hook for the contract.

In this case, Hicks can’t sign off on anything and I doubt MLB would agree to backstop any expensive moves.

The good news is that This Thing

doesn’t need a massive overhaul.

We need a couple of shrewd moves…find somebody (doesn’t have to be a star) who may be hiding under a rock or blocked who can get on base and mash LH pitching. I don’t know who that person is but JD should and he needs to trade for him or get him in some kind of throw in deal.

We also need some bullpen arms and if none are available turn to your internal options. There are at least 8, maybe more pitchers vying for our rotation next year. Those that don’t make the rotation may need to become relievers (key word is may) and I’m thinking of both Brandon McCarthy & Matt Harrison.

There will be no acceptable excuses for JD to do this off-season what he did last off-seaon or at the 2009 trade deadline. It’s almost 2010 which means it’s time for him to quit hanging his hat on the Teixeira Trade.

Ugh

Just discussing this with my friends and I have to think that JD is fired upon sale, or fired one year in. Regardless, I hate to think about a new owner coming in and making brash, poorly thought out decisions, because that could very well rewind us to when Hicks bought the team. I can’t take another 15 years of bullshit from the front office. I’m depressed now.

by FuturePants on Dec 4, 2009 9:55 AM CST reply actions

Not to be too liberal with analogies

But the Wiemar Republic in Germany sucked. Really bad. But the “change” was a helluva lot worse.

I think what we’re seeing now is that the reality of the “Hicks must be gone at all costs” argument is setting in. And in fact, the “at all costs” it is a lot scarier than it seemed even a few days ago. Maybe Gilbert would be a great owner, combining the strong trajectory this team has been on with resources that the club hasn’t seen in ten years.

Or maybe he’ll be the worst thing to ever happen to the Rangers, another busy-body Peter Angelos (far scarier than Jerry Jones, who at least won a couple of Superbowls) who runs the organization into the ground. The one thing worse than being a midmarket club that struggles to contend every year would be another Baltimore or Mets who spends twice as much as the league average and fails all the time.

by JBImaknee on Dec 4, 2009 10:24 AM CST up reply actions

So what it comes down to is that

you would rather have the organization live with the current shitty conditions because you’re afraid of change and the possibility that JD may be further castrated or shown the door.

I’m sorry, the current conditions for the #5 media market team are unacceptable. And if change means that JD and/or Ryan are shown the door, the risk for change of the unacceptable is worth it.

And would you rather have a new owner come in here...

and trade away Smoak and Perez and Scheppers for veterans just to inflate the payroll? Maybe go out and sign Lackey or Harden to a huge multi year deal?

Personally I want an owner who sees what this organization is right now. We don’t have the room to suppoert a 100 million dollar payroll this year. But if we had an owner who would leave the FO in place, let our young kids grow and develop, and supplement them in areas of need with veterans either thru trade or FA that would be great.

You and a lot of people have been dumbed down into accepting the myth that this team can’t support a $ 100 million payroll. We are not the Milwaukee Brewers or Minnesota Twins. We are the 5th largest media market in a sports crazy area. DFW will support a winner, especially if they know the owner is as passionate about winning as he is about making money.

This organization should be modeled after the Philadelphia Phillies. Build from within, determine who your best players are and then keep them, make shrewd trades when needed and sign the right free agents when they come available.

When a Cliff Lee is made available when your team is in contention at the trade deadline, you go get him and you don’t have to give your very best prospects to do so.

That’s how the GM gets a standing ovation and endearing respect from the players in The Room.

We don’t have the room to suppoert a 100 million dollar payroll this year

This year dumbass. We couldn’t do it unless we made stupid moves that would do more harm than good. Looking at our roster and whats available in FA, 100 million dollar payroll in 2010 is not going to happen. Unless you want to dole out 20 million dollar a year contracts for Lackey and Bay which would just be spending for the sake of spending.

Now in 2011 or 2012 when our young guys have accrued service time and we have guys entering arbitration along with veterans we sign or whatever then yes we should be at 100 million. But its how you got there not just the number. We have had a 100 million dollar payroll before but it was because we wasted money on CHP, and gave millions to middle relievers. The Phillies didn’t get to their payroll level by simply throwing money around. They built a core of talent and when those guys were developed and ready to win they supplemented them with veterans and their payroll grew naturally. Thats what I want here.

I think CJ has the arsenal to become

a good starting pitcher and given the success of LH pitchers in Arlington it’s an option worth persuing.

For those who didn’t see him back in the day, CJ is very similiar to Kenny Rogers circa ’91-92 and should have at least a 60% chance of having the same success Rogers had.

what does this mean Richard?

How will Wilson’s stuff work the second and third time around? That’s the big question. Opponents did bat .325 against him, so he put men on base. Still, I think Wilson can do it and if he can, that’s another lefty in the rotation.

Is the .325 regarding batters that hit against him during his brief stint as a starter (their second and third time at bat)? Batters hit .234 against him this year unless you’re confusing it with the .325 OBP that batters had against him, that must be it, because why would you say that a pitcher who is hit at a .325 clip and gives up lots of walks, is a good candidate for the rotation?

I remember I took my dad to the Ranger game for Father’s day an it ended up that CJ was the starter. I still have the score card. It was pretty much ground ball after ground ball going in between SS and 3B. Now that the left side IF defense is better, he might be able to succeed as a starter.

pitching is premium

and millwood for 1 year is more valuable than people realize. we need guys who can eat innings, especially with so many starting possibilities that are young or who have not made it through a full season. you’ll kill the bullpen if you don’t have a guy like millwood to eat 7 innings every now and then. look at what happened with oakland last year. their bullpen was way overworked because their starters were young and needed to be managed with care.

yeah, but he was paid less than 6mil last year

Yeah, he hit .298 with 42 SB, but he will turn 32 next season. No way he can keep that up, especially not for a 50% bump in salary.

I don’t think it’s a bad deal, just not what I had envisioned he would sign for.

And, dammit, why does he have to stay in the AL West??

Grieve: The Yanks have struggled so far. - Lewin: Yeah, cry me a bag of money.
Dykstra has all the money!
