Mariners agree with Figgins
It appears as if Figgins will sign a 4 year 36 million dollar deal with the Mariners. The little guy ends up not leaving the division...
This note from MLB Trade Rumors about the Angels trying hard to trade Gary Matthews Jr. made me chuckle... Matthews, 35, hit .250/.336/.361 in 360 plate appearances for the Angels this year, playing all three outfield positions. Between the contract, Matthews' loss of power, and his questionable defense, he has strong negative value. Without the contract, what would Matthews fetch on the free agent market? Maybe one year, $1-2MM?

Figgans is a good fit for the M's
but does he really represent a significant upgrade over Beltre? I think they just spent $36M without really improving the talent level of next year’s team compared to last year’s.

He's
a much different player for sure. MLB Trade Rumors cites his defensive prowess but ignores how good of a defender Beltre is. I think that is a wash maybe even a downgrade. Obviously, you lose a lot of pop with Figgins, but having him and Ichiro together at the top of the lineup is a baserunning nightmare for opponents.

i agree, its not a big upgrade over beltre and is probably a push. it will be interesting to see what kind of deal beltre gets now. i still think this is a solid move for the M’s, as they adequately replace beltre’s contributions in the field and at the plate, and put together a great 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup for manufacturing runs.

Beltre lost a lot of his pop
after signing that contract. Figgins and Ichiro will be a pretty salty 1-2 punch
That's why they call them business sox
