Same here

Pretty much a toss up. Either one would be fine with me at 2 but I went with Perez. 18 yr old in AA and held his own after his first start.

this one's obvious guys

there are 2 teams, 1 has smoke and trades him to another team for perez… yeah smoaks going to make it to the bigs this year and be atleast adequate, but which end of the deal would you want your favorite team to be on. I think we all would want to be on the perez side here.

I want to be on the team that has both.

Luckily for me, the team that I love, does.

I love Perez like a new beagle puppy

But the pitcher flameout rate is dastardly high, and I think the likelihood of Smoak failing is hyper-low. Here’s another factoid most aren’t aware of: Smoak’s LD rates last year were 28% in Frisco and 25% in OKC. This is one reason he didn’t hit as many home runs as we would have liked (Also culpable: Injuries) and also a great indication that he’ll be able to sustain a high BABIP at higher levels. With his astronomical walk rate, Smoaky could be a .400 OBP man.And writing that just gave me a bit of a boner.

by Conjunction on Dec 5, 2009 6:49 AM CST reply actions

Perez over Smoak

I’m glad that the plans are for him to spend the whole year in Frisco next year. I just don’t want to see him rushed.

I went with the P'rezident

I like Smoak, but not to sound like a broken record…his R/L splits are a tad worrisome…maybe worrisome is a bit strong, it just injects enough caution to let Perez slide ahead of him.

Perez is a as good a prospect as you can get at 19, but

I went with Smoak. Smoak, Perez, Scheppers, and Feliz all have All-Star ceilings. Smoak (and maybe Scheppers) is farther along by virtue of age, so I’ll go with the more developed prospects over Perez.

Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.

by rooster on Dec 5, 2009 8:57 AM CST reply actions

I like high ceiling, as I've said many times

Basically, I think that Scheppers, if healthy, will be better than Smoak, no question. Perez has a chance to be the best player on this entire club, but his development could slow. I’m more confident of Scheppers succeeding if healthy.

I view the three relevant guys like this:

Perez: extremely high ceiling, still seems to have somewhat high developmental risk due to age. And there is always the young pitcher injury risk. 10% chance of being the best.
Scheppers: very high ceiling, injury concerns are the only real risk I see. High ceiling college guys tend to have less development risk. 40% chance of being the best, 10% chance of being 2nd best (behind Perez), 50% being worst (due to injury)
Smoak: not as high ceiling as the pitchers, but not as much risk. Far more narrow expected value distribution. 55% chance of being the best, but due to failure of Perez and Scheppers, not him exceeding their potential.

So basically, I think Smoak would only be better than Perez or Scheppers if they failed. And I don’t worry about Scheppers injury as much as other people do. But I can understand any disagreement here.

Most switch hitters have a platoon split

and Smoak’s BABIP RH was .200 with a 16% LD so had some bad luck.

Yeah but

So you want him to hit more popups? Grounders have a better chance of going for hits then popups. His BABIP still should have been in the .240 range at least.

by Kinslerhomer on Dec 5, 2009 1:08 PM CST up reply actions

For a first baseman with no speed...

…you probably want more fly balls.

And definitely more homers.

That said, I still think he profiles more as a switch-hitting John Olerud than the next Mark Teixeira. I think folks are going to be disappointed when he comes up and is a 20-25 homer per year guy.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 5, 2009 1:15 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know how many HRs he hits

but I do think that he has way more raw power than an Olerud, at least from the left side. The ball leaps off of his bat.

And this doesn’t always come true, but let’s remember that not every power hitter hits a ton of HRs the second they’re in pro ball or generally when they’re 22. You guys were saying these things about Adrian Gonzalez (as were scouts) right through when he was in the majors.

by Brett Perryman on Dec 5, 2009 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

Olerud comps for Smoak

I would be thrilled if we get something like Olerud out of Smoak.

Olerud was a very, very good player. Much under-rated IMO.

16 year career with .398 career OBP and career 128 OPS+. Also had a couple seasons around 1.000 OPS.

I know they do, but I thought his was pretty noticeable RH v LH

Like he is MUCH better LH than he is RH, even going back to college…better he have issues vs. LHP than RHP though.

Either way, he’s still an animal in an animal packed system.

Yeah

But if he can be an OBP monster with some power left-handed, he’s going to provide a major overall boost to this offense regardless of being weak right-handed.

I worry a lot less about a good overall hitter who struggles against lefties rather than righties, because (A, it’s easier to “hide” a guy from lefties if need-be, and (B, hitting righties well provides a lot more value than hitting lefties well. See also: Howard, Ryan.

From a Scott Lucas email today
Liga Mexicana del Pacifico

Luis Mendoza’s prolific, productive winter continues. Already logging 63 innings, Mendoza has a 2.84 ERA with 21 walks and 57 strikeouts. His teammates include John Mayberry (hitting .313/.389/.493 and frequently manning center field) and Jason Botts (.188/.232/.313), who apparently made his professional debut as a catcher(!) last night. Allegedly, Botts caught an eight-hit, no-walk shutout, didn’t make any mistakes in the field, and picked off a runner at second. Fascinating if true.

Martin Feliz for me

I understand the flameout/injury concerns of young pitching, but I can’t help salivating over an 18yo holding his own in AA. And I understand Smoak is almost a lock to be a productive ML player, I just like the upside of P’rez more. Scheppers is 2a for me.
