Cubs could announce a deal with Mike Cameron by Monday
I'm sad. And I don't want to hear from any of the simpletons out there who want to argue that Cameron isn't good.

It's not that Cameron isn't good
But a lot of people get turned off by his age. I’m not one of them, but I also believe It’d be foolish to invest in a CF when he have Borbon ready to contribute and more pressing needs.
I'm sad too
Because this means Byrd is still out there on the market.

I wouldn't have minded Cameron
I think the team needs more than that, but I agree that Cameron is still a very good player and it’d have been nice to see him in a Rangers uniform.

Really???
Do we have to go back and read the GDT’s and all the angst last season over this team’s inability to put the ball in play?
a .340 OBP and 150 K's. A great combination.
You can bury one K machine in a lineup, but not two or three.
Yes, you can
A guy who has a .340 OBP, hits for power, and plays great CF defense is a significant asset.
The fact that he Ks 150 times per year should be a non-issue.

It CAN be a non-issue, just not on this team
Just as swampdonkey suggested, you can’t have 3 high-K power guys in your lineup else you’re destined to have an all-or-nothing offense. Kinsler, Davis, Cruz, Cameron? Texas needs to abandon the HR-derby lineup for some real baseball players.

I disagree.
Texas needs to abandon the HR-derby lineup for some real baseball players.
The implication that Mike Cameron is not a “real baseball player” is one of the more asinine things I’ve read in some time.

He's a real baseball player.
He’s just not what this team needs.
What does this team need?
If not a quality defensive CF’er who is also a solid offensive player?

I'd rather have Borbon in center for the season and use the money on Harden or another potential #1 starter.
Also, discount the K’s if you want, but I think it makes it much more difficult for this team to produce runs if we have lineup that consistently struggles to put the ball in play.
I was referring to an injured/high-upside guy like Harden/Sheets/Bedard.
And signing Cameron could affect the contract we could offer them. I’d rather throw that 3-4 million their way.
It doesn't really matter
it doesn’t sound like there’s any money to spend on anyone.
We’ll have a DH platoon of David Murphy and Joe Inglett next season.

I snickered at that just now
But then I realized, fuck, you’re probably right.

theres a big difference
between guys who strike out a lot because they cant make consistent contact when they swing and guys who strike out a lot because theyre working deep counts and drawing a lot of walks as well
Phillies
They had Howard and Werth, both of whom were over 150 Ks, along with Ibanez, who had 119 Ks in 130-some games, and Utley, who had 110 Ks.
And they made it to the World Series.
The Yankees had 3 guys with at least 100 Ks at 3 guys with at least 90, and that’s with Posada and ARod, two fo their higher K guys, missing significant time.
The 2008 Rays made it to the WS with the 2nd highest number of Ks in the league, and with a 166 K guy, a 134 K guy, a 131 K guy, and a 122 K guy.
The idea that you can’t win or can’t have a consistent offense if you have high-K guys is ridiculous.

Real baseball players
And exactly what makes a baseball player “real”? Gritty facial hair? A useless ability to bunt? A Murphy-esque girly slap-swing?
Chris Davis has really done a great job of ruining the reputation of hitters who happen to strike out among Ranger fans. People need to realize it’s not how a player makes his outs that matters, it’s how good a he is at avoiding them and what kind of production he provides.

ryan howard's
186 K’s would have been a better fit

Well, they had to replace Bradley, but it's unlike the Cubs to be smart about it.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
I'd rather have Cameron than Bay.
Cameron is the 2nd best OFer on the free agent market this winter, you fools – and he’s a freaking type B so you don’t lose a pick signing him, which makes him even more value-for-dollars than Bay.
But I’m fine with the team sticking with Borbon in CF. I lament, with much wailing and gnashing of my teeth, the lack of payroll room that would allow them to take on sizeable contracts in trade. Having cash this winter would allow a team to vulture very creatively.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
good point
Guys like Javier Vazquez, Pat Burrell, Derek Lowe, Curtis Granderson, etc have been circulating as guys that could be had.
Ranger fans say "NO! NO!" to Go Go.
Keep Reinsdorf's chub from ruining my club.
ditto
would have loved Cameron, but it looks like the team is serious about going with Borbon in center. and i’m reallying looking forward to a line with borbon, andrus, kinsler terrorizing the basepaths.
As am I...
but I don’t think the team is as serious about going with Borbon in center as you do. I wish that were the case, but I just think they can’t afford to re-sign Byrd or someone else like Cameron to put in CF.
This may be a rare case of it being a good thing that the Rangers don’t have any $ right now. As I would like to see Borbon get his chance in CF too.
