Went Gutierrez here
His AFL performance really impressed me. Mains mysterious illness/injury issues that kept him off the field most of last year dropped him in my eyes. Ross, like ive said before, needs to do it in full season ball. Font wasn’t as impressive as i’d expected although he was still really good. And Kiker faded hard down the stretch so my vote went to Gutierrez

This might turn into Gutierrez vs Main.
I went Gutierrez. I love that they both work with the Fastball-Curveball combo. I know a ton of people point to Main’s athleticism being off the charts, but shouldn’t some of that be negated by his injury history, especially the recent stuff? Their ceilings seem similar enough, Gutierrez’ fastball seems to be a bit better, but Main may have the better curveball.
To me, it came down to unknown medical condition vs off-field issues. While either can ground a career, give me off-field issues here over a condition that a team of (theoretically) fantastic doctors couldn’t diagnose.

Gutierrez also missed most of last year with injurys.

I put Main over Gutierrez based upon mentality. Gutie just doesn't seem to push himself.
I’m not sure Main’s fastball is the lesser of the two. He gets a lot of swinging/looking strikes with it. I think Gutie’s curveball is superior, though. I’m not advocating Gutie as a nickname, just too lazy to type.

I voted for Main due to the fact that it was illness and not injury that derailed him last year.
However, I cannot imagine Main having a “better” curveball than Gut. Gut’s curve is absolutely wicked, wicked.

I voted Main
I’ve just liked the guy from the day we drafted him, don’t ask me why. Still think he could turn out.
Man, if Gutierrez turns into a top five prospect, what a steal. Giving up two org fodder guys for a potential young, solid starter? That’s the stuff of dreams.
Main
Tough call, but I am not ready to give up on him or drop him ou tof the top 5.
|Space for Rent|
Although if I knew it was going to come down to Ross/Gutierrez, I would've voted Ross.
Font at 5 and Ross at 6 are pretty interchangeable to me.
I went with the Gut
(see what I did there?)
But seriously, I don’t know how you really differentiate between all the guys here. Kiker, Ross, Font, Main, and Danny all have good cases. I went with Danny because he seems to be the closest to contributing to the team out of that group

I've read it before.
Here’s where I’m basing my point off of:
They never really found out what it was. They said it was just kind of an unidentified viral infection of my liver. What they were thinking was–just based upon the results and the signs that I showed–that I’d probably had this sometime probably close to January. That’s what the doctors were thinking. They were thinking it was probably affecting me this whole season.
He feels better now, but they never actually identified and treated what it was. It could be any number of recurring type problems: genetic, metabolic, latent viral, autoimmune, etc. It’s great that he’s feeling better now, but I would have felt better if it were a specific problem that he either had to have surgery for or get some other known type of treatment. There’s no comparison for this.

People keep saying what a great athlete he is..
but, to me at least, I could care less if my pitcher is an elite athlete as long as he throws quality pitches for quality strikes.

That's a pretty subjective thing to figure out.
For me, reports about his aptitude and athleticism seem to be filled with higher than for any other pitcher. He might be beaten out by Perez in aptitude, but no one appears to be a better athlete. I think the combination gives him a higher potential to be in control of his body, ultimately allowing him to control better his pitches, and to have a really good idea of what he wants to do with his pitches.
Not saying Robbie Ross is a chump. Not at all. Just want to see him against a little stiffer competition and see how he adjusts. I might put Ross ahead of Gutierrez as I think through this the next few voting rounds.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
The Baseball prospect lists are filled
with athletes that can’t adapt and never grow into what their tools suggest. “athleticism” can be thrown around all you want, but give me the better pitcher with great K rates and the best GB/FB ratio in professional baseball among starters. Hitters just don’t hit the ball in the air off Ross. That is more valuable than being an athlete, especially when involved with pitching. Plus saying Main can control his body more because he is a better athlete doesn’t make sense, especially when you consider Main’s injury history. It’s about the repetition of your delivery, and letting that take over.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I think you're drawing the wrong conclusions from things that I agree with.
The Baseball prospect lists are filled with athletes that can’t adapt…
Yep. But, if you can tell me which prospects are unable to do avoid that, you can make a lot of money. This problem is the fun inherent in prospect lists, and the reason some GMs are better than others. They either manage this risk better or have some ability to identify prospects at higher risk for not developing. It’s not much of an argument against ranking Main over Ross. According to many interviews with Rangers minor league coaches, Main shows the ability to adapt. His aptitude is ranked among the highest of all the Rangers’ prospects.
…give me a better pitcher with great K rates and the best GB/FB raio in professional baseball among starters.
Yep. Ross had a lights out year. But, it was compiled against inferior competition. I will put more stock in this performance at higher levels. Remember Main at just 6 months older than Ross was competing at two levels higher.
…saying Main can control his body more because he is a better athlete doesn’t make sense, especially when you consider Main’s injury history.
Main’s injuries have had no impact on parts of his body fundamental to his delivery. The injuries are also not an indication of a body that is prone to breaking but have been very fluky.
It’s about the repetition of your delivery….
Yep. But, every talent evaluator uses athleticism as an indicator of a pitching prospect’s ability to repeat his delivery. In addition, Rangers minor league coaches have already spoken in many interviews about Main’s ability to alter his delivery and transfer it into game situations.
Someone might be able to convince me that Ross should be ahead of Main, but nothing in your post would do that.

I went with Gutierrez…after watching him during AFL that guy is a legit 2 pitch guy…hopefully #3 can show enough promise for him to stick in the roto.

I wanted to be a homer and vote Main, but just couldn't do it in a more analytical moment.
It was between Font, Main, and Gutierrez. MaxRam should be on this list as well.
I went with Font. Younger. Evil fastball. Showed the maturity to work on flaws and showed some ability to reduce them.

There is plenty of time for injury, control of all pitches, command of fastball, developing a 2nd pitch
I think all the pitchers in this group have significant questions
so I’ll take the guy with the 80 fastball.

Also
Danny Clark said this:
His changeup became a plus pitch for him going into the second half of the season. I thought that was something that really helped him offset–obviously everybody is geared up for his velocity, and with his changeup, it really gave him an offset. I thought about MaxRam for a second...
…then noticed he wasn’t there. Right now, he’s going to fall into the 7-9 category for me. Definitely after Font, probably after Main and Ross, ahead of Kiker, Moreland, Profar.

Michael Main here
I like his upside still. If at this time next year he is still plagued by injuries then its a different story.

Main is only 6 months older than Ross.
If, God forbid, Main has another freak injury year, he would be on schedule to hit the majors at about the same calendar age as Ross. Both would be in line for a look in the majors by age 23. I think Main is a couple of years away from a make or break year.

Seems fairly likely Ross, Main and Font are going to be the next three in some order.
Perhaps Gutirrez in there for a next four.
Of course that doesn’t always work out that way.
Personally I feel like my order is Font > Ross > Main > Gutirrez, btw.
I’m still extremely open to suggestion, though.
You don't think Moreland
should make the top 10? He is probably the best position player in the organization right now besides Smoak.

But even for me I think he’s just outside the top 10. His lack of an actual position and all the conflicting opinions on his swing do concern me somewhat.
