Tuesday a.m. Rangers things
And the winter meetings continue...
Marlon Byrd turned down arbitration, and T.R. Sullivan writes that the Rangers have a "sliver of hope" that they can bring him back. Pudge Rodriguez will not be back, since he signed a 2 year, $6 million deal with the Nationals.
Jeff Wilson writes about the outfield alignment for next year, with Julio Borbon apparently slated to hit leadoff and play centerfield.
Richard Durrett says that there's a lot of talk about Kevin Millwood being shopped, but he doesn't think the Rangers will move him.
Sullivan says the D-Backs offered Chris Snyder for C.J. Wilson, and were politely told no.
There's also a story up about how popular the Rangers' pitching depth among other teams.

Millwood
There was a rumor in Jamey’s TROT COFFEY about Millwood going to Baltimore for a 2nd tier pitching prospect and the Rangers kicking in cash to boot. If this happens I will be most upset unless the savings net us somebody really good. I just don’t see much logic in moving Millwood and I would hope they would keep him unless they are overwhelmed.

I agree.
It doesn’t make sense for us to trade Millwood unless we get someone who can significantly help our team now-a second tier prospect would be monumentally stupid.

I guess it depends what '2nd tier' means
if 2nd tier meant "Matusz is a 2nd tier prospect compared to Wieters’, then okay… sadly I doubt that is the case.
It makes no sense to trade Millwood + cash for a Laird-like return. Maybe Millwood w/o cash, which would be a salary dump. Or Millwood + cash for real prospects. But it isn’t as if some team is going to get Millwood with the Rangers paying 50% of his salary for nothing.

The O's second tier is pretty good
Some teams isn’t. If we were going to turn around and sign Lackey then I would be happy to accept a David Hernandez or Erbe for Millwood. Or even if this was still a rebuilding year.
But as it stands right now if we are going to give up a reliable veteran starter for a prospect and then go sign a injury plagued starter, regardless of how good he is when healthy, I think we are throwing in the towel on 2010. Sure we could catch lightning in a bottle but essentially we would be putting off seriously competing until 2011

i think it does mean closer to the first one
because the jamey post says “second level” pitching prospects – which I take to mean the ones under Matusz and Arrieta. I’m not so familiar with their prospects but does that mean guys like Britton or Erbe?
by ab03 on Dec 8, 2009 11:07 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't know all that much about their system beyond Arrieta and Matusz
both of whom I love. I’m still mad that the Rangers didn’t take Arrieta when they had the chance.
Sickels just came out with his Baltimore list.

To what end do we trade Milly?
Considering the payroll limitations and available FA SP talent and their cost, I am confused at why we would trade Milly. Sure $12 M is a bunch of money but it’s for one year. He has a history of pitching well in contract years (see his ERA for the Indians), and has been a consistent innings eater. If he sucks then you are out $12M. If he is good then you have more options depending on where the Rangers are in the standings come trade deadline. Worse case you keep him and come up short of the playoffs and get draft picks when he signs elsewhere.
Is there an obvious better option to spend the $12M he is owed this season??? I do no see it now but will strive to keep an open mind.

There are better pitchers but those guys have serious question marks
harden and Sheets are better pitchers than Millwood. However neither of them are anywhere near as reliable to take the mound 30 times a year which given our rotation makeup (one veteran and 4 young guys) the last thing we need if we are truly wanting to be competitive is to be forced to rely on a rotation of 5 young guys for 1/3 or more of the season. The extra 4 million or so Millwood will make over either of those two is worth the comfort of having a reliable veteran in the rotation IMO.

Big Steve again a rational and well thought out post. All too often I see remarks that require a forgiving nature while reading. So nice to see a decent response.
Like you I believe the extra money is a solid investment. I think the real question is do we go for it in 2010 or keep our powder dry? By going for it I mean load up a bunch of prospects and trade for a “Grienke type” and add him to a rotation that includes Milly, Feldman and some kids.

So I rambled over to the greatness of Baseball-reference.com
to see if they could help me in determining how many infield hits Chris Davis had upon his return on August 25 and whaddya know…
Chris Davis had infield hits on August 26, September 1, September 8, two on September 18, September 19 and on October 4 which comes out officially to 7 infield hits after coming back up from the minors. So Adam, all 7 infield hits Davis had this year came upon his return.
That list does not include the September 1 (Game 1 of DH) ground ball that went under Lyle Overbay’s glove that should have been ruled an error (Eric Nadel was incredulous when Davis was given a hit and 2 RBI).
That list also doesn’t include the long list of Texas Leaguers, dying quails or ground balls that Davis also had upon his return.

Chris Davis had followed by smarmy remark that ajm made last night so it’s somewhat topical given that nothing else of note is happening with this team.
Now we know exactly how many infield hits Chris Davis had and that his numbers upon return were rather gooey.

Anytime a ball is his on the ground or fails to leave the infield it’s an out. Anytime it’s hit in the air to the outfield it’s in play. That should take care of things.

teams do weird things when chasing solid LAIEs like Millwood. Remember, Tampa got Kazmir for the lesser Zambrano…
Given that multiple teams seem interested in Milly and the Rangers (hopefully) don’t have to trade him, I can imagine them getting something decent back in return. Obviously you aren’t getting a Scherzer unless Arizona is really skeptical about his long-term health, but maybe they are worried and the Rangers aren’t for whatever reason. Who knows.

Rafael Soriano
Buster Olney is reporting Soriano will request a trade from the Braves. He turns 30 next month and continues to produce, opponents hit .199 off of him last year, has a 4:1 K/BB ratio, 3.11 tRA, and does a good job keeping the ball in the park. Bill James projects 2.39 ERA, 79 IP and 90 K’s next season.
Soriano made $6.35MM last year, and is due for a raise in arbitration. A little rich, but could be a solid piece in the back of the bullpen if we could move Millwood’s contract. Soriano would be a free agent at years end but could be a solid piece for this year, in addition to the year long window to sign him to an extension. And now that he accepted and will be traded, he will no longer cost a 1st round pick. Any interest?

I don’t disagree, but it appears as though his agent has thought up a way to get what he wants. I forget, is there any kind of a wait to trade players after arb, or are they free to be included in any trade immediately

The Braves offered him arbitration thinking he would want to go out and get a multi year deal
That provides alot more security than a one year deal but Soriano may have viewed the market as one where either a multi year deal wasn’t possible or if it was the price would be well below what he could get in arb and try again next year at the multi year deal

I think
Soriano called their bluff. They were hoping he’d decline to test free agency, giving them a first round pick. The Braves are now dealing from a position of strength, and despite the lack of interest so far I bet they get a decent chip for him, and free up some salary. I’ve always been a fan of Saito.

What was their alternative?
The Braves got out-maneuvered and forced Soriano to miss out on hitting free agency. Both parties are probably not terribly happy with what happened.
The Braves didn’t really lose 2 first round picks. They never really had it to begin with because if they didn’t offer arb they wouldn’t get the picks.

by NothinG on Dec 8, 2009 11:46 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly my point
Of course they thought he wouldn’t. However, teams for the most part are either decreasing payrolls or increasing at a lower rate. The market has been deflating a bit over the last couple of years and it is noticeably affecting free agency as well as the arbitration process. His agent clearly spoke to other teams and realized the market for a pitcher with Soriano’s talent who will also cost a first round pick isn’t very high. It wasn’t anywhere near $8/year, that is for sure.
The Braves must not have factored this in when they offered and now they are in a bind.
by Heebs on Dec 8, 2009 12:01 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yup
With the Braves offering him arb he knows any contract he would get just took a hit because of the draft picks some team would have to give up. Once the Braves offered, he accepts and demands a trade. Granted, had Soriano gone after a multiyear contract he’d get more total dollars but for 2010 arb will pay more. Then he’ll just go get a contract in 2011.

This actually brings up a very good point that I've been thinking about a lot
I really think the new CBA might bring about some major changes to the arbitration rules. For players like Soriano, teams hold a lot of leverage as far as arbitration goes. Once he receives a Type A status the stakes change considerably. The team is now provided quite a bit of leverage, knowing that a reliever such as himself will take a huge hit with regard to market value if they offer arbitration. Teams know they will lose a first round pick and have to commit a bunch of money.
It makes sense for a guy like Soriano to accept in this situation. He gets more money, gains trade leverage, and knows his team has committed a lot of money to relievers. They probably will have to make an adjustments. The leverage has shifted back to Soriano.
I think this system really isn’t fair to players like Soriano and will be seriously adjusted. Players whose performance net them a Type A status as one of the best at his position in the game should have more options, not less.
by Heebs on Dec 8, 2009 11:37 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
here would be my proposal
If a team signs a type A they lose their 2nd round pick regardless. 1st round picks are protected for everyone. Type B’s you lose your 4th round pick.
Type A compensation for the losing team is a 1st and 2nd rounder (completely get rid of the supplemental round)
Type B gets a 3rd rounder

you sign 2 type As, you lose your 1st and 2nd rounders
you sign 3 type As, you lose your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd roudners.
You sign a type B, you lose a 3rd rounder
and so forth.
Instead of directly transferring the picks, the picks all go into a pot. Then the teams losing the free agnets will get picks from the pot, either by player rating or original record.
So since Bay>Pudge in rating, the Red Sox would get the highest pick in the pot, the Rangers the 2nd highest.

The compensation system is very screwed up
There are all sorts of problems. A team could lose a Type A free agent and receive a 3rd or 4th round pick. Teams like the Yankees or Red Sox can sign 3 type A’s and lose 3 type A’s, and net tons of draft position: they lose their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks, but the picks they gain from other teams’ could be all 1st rounders.
There is also huge inflation due to the supplemental round. If the Cardinals re-signed Holliday and the Red Sox re-signed Bay, neither team would gain supplemental picks. But if the Sox signed Holliday and the Cards Bay, then they’d trade 1st round picks and each gain a supplemental pick – everyone else’s 2nd round picks will drop by two. Since the supp picks reward teams losing free agents, which are typically teams rich enough to have originally signed those guys or pay through heavy arbitration, the supp round dilutes the subsequent rounds mostly at the expense of the low-income teams.
The entire compensation system is stupid and needs to go.

Good god - listening to Colin Cowherd talk about baseball is painful
“I would trade prospects all day long for Halladay. When’s the last time a prospect impacted the playoffs?”
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

Here's a thought that just popped in my head
How bout AZ’s Chris Young for Brandon McCarthy. They have inquired about our pitching, and we’re interested in another outfielder. Both were highly touted prospects who haven’t lived up to the hype.

Now that we've made the declaration of Borbon in CF
I don’t think we need to be looking for a starting or even 4th OF.
