So these studies were where

when this team signed The Sosa & Lofton?

that's the thing

at some point, the price drops to the point that these guys become a bargain. This team doesn’t get to chase the Bays and Lackeys of the world. We chase two types of undervalued players, old and coming off an injury, and I think that will hold true again this year when we trade Millwood and sign Sheets and Dye with the savings.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

Both those guys were ok with one year deals

The article makes it sound to me like alot of these older guys want multi year deals and act like its an insult when they only get offered a one year deal.

Sosa and Lofton were one year deals for smallish money

Not really what is being discussed in that article.

What do voluntary mean?

Please get out of the way of Josey's agenda.

Signing ancient players like that is a waste of time

if the goal was to make that specific team better in 2007.

lofton played well here

 .303/.380/.438.

and gagne put up pretty good numbers until right at the very end. both players definitely helped the team

And that team broke the gate 23-42.

wow, that made no sense given what you're arguing

Old players don't help teams in situations like

the 2007 Rangers were don’t help those teams improve. Not only do they not help those teams improve, they’re very expensive band-aids that teams with payrolls below the Oakland A’s can’t afford.

Those two players played very well

so using the team’s record does nothing, nothing at all to make your point.

what the hell was wrong with Lofton?

if nothing else, the trade return was great for such a signing

I guess I've missed all those contributions Max

made to the big league club after he was acquired.

His biggest accomplishment to date is helping give the minor league system depth but he’s 25 years old now and hasn’t done a thing in The Show.

When he contributes meaningfully in The Show, we can give JD credit for a good trade but to this point it was a waste of $ 6 million by a team on a small market payroll.

even if he never contributes at all

the fact that we signed a need (CF) to play half a year and then ship off for a highly touted prospect was pretty freakin’ savvy. But who are you to give credit where credit is due?

I wonder how much

LaTroy Hawkins wants. We are clearly sniffing around on a few late inning guys, and Hawkins has been filthy lately.

That's so sad.

Definitely tugged on my heart-strings. Poor Johnny Damon. No one wants him :(

Im sure his phone would be ringing off the wall if he was ok with a 1 year deal

Even at 12-13 mil

I somehow doubt that

He had a great start last year in a park that was playing exceptionally homer friendly. He pretty much is a COF with decent OBP and minimal power. I bet he wouldn’t have a problem with a one year deal more in the 8 million dollar range to play a poor left field for someone, really the only place he can play now.

What do voluntary mean?

by JKolar on Dec 8, 2009 1:17 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, think the article was biased?

There’s tons of raw data that various GM’s are presenting to suggest that signing older players to multi-year contracts is a bad idea…but Scott Boras and a few players disagree, so we’ll side with the players.

To be fair, I think that veterans like Vizquel can help rookies like Andrus, or MY with Kinsler. I just don’t think it should factor very heavily into your decisions, especially with regards to money and years in a contract.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Dec 8, 2009 12:42 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly

why would you believe what an agent says over, basically anyone else. Agents lie for their business. Multiyear huge deals for people past about 33 or 34 are likely to be very bad ideas.

I don’t get the problem with Burrell vs Abreu. It makes perfect sense to me to give the younger of two pretty equivalent players the better contract, as he is less likely to just fall off the face of the planet. Obviously it was a bad bet by the Rays last year, but I suspect they would do the same thing again given a similar situation.

What do voluntary mean?

It's interesting how many older players for the Yankees perform very well

It could be 1) the Yankees can afford to the take the risk on older players that other teams cannot. They either hit on a player or unload them. Or 2) there is some strange, pharmaceutical reason why all the older Yankee keep performing.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

a big part of the reason

that so many of their left handed offensive players saw their numbers jump last year was bc of their new ballpark.

His power hit his highest career level

What happened is he came close to tripling his power output at home while several of his peripherals dropped a little bit.

Is Boras forgetting,

when he makes his collusion accusations, that Tex got 180 mil and Sabathia got 161 mil? He’s so arrogant he assumes if he’s not making more and more money every year, someone must be breaking the law. It’s like Mark Buehrle thinking the Rangers must be stealing his signs because they were hitting him.

same as above

the preceding post was a great success.
