Yankees/D-Backs/Tigers three way deal reportedly done

The Yankees, Diamondbacks and Tigers have supposedly agreed on a three-way deal that results in Curtis Granderson going to the Yankees.

Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy are heading to the D-Backs, and Max Scherzer, Daniel Schlereth, Phil Coke, and Austin Jackson go to the Tigers.

I see this as a very solid deal for the Tigers.  I'm underwhelmed by the D-Backs return, Yankees did okay.

I don't think his offense even needs to rebound for this to be worth it

a) 30 home runs should translate into more production in their lineup even if he performs offensively the same
b) the improvement in CF, alone, makes their team significantly better, imo
c) His salary is a joke, just for value’s sake

I understand why the Yankees wanted Granderson. I also see what the Tiggers are doing. But why is AZ giving up twio young pitchers for and expensive pitcher and an unproven SP?

Good deal for the Tigers, OK for the Yankees, don’t know for AZ.

agreed, Scherzer is probably one of the best underrated young pitchers out there

while the Tiger’s fans may think this was a bad deal, If Scherzer stays healthy and AJax plays up to one tenth of his Yankee hype, they’ll end up well off in this deal.

Very few teams have a CF who Granderson wouldn’t be an upgrade over but very few of those teams don’t have to even look at his salary when considering whether to pursue him.

The Yankees recognize the window is open to win several championships

and are using their minor league system very efficiently. When one of their vets get too old they cut ’em loose and then go get somebody like Granderson (who is 28 years old and tethered long-term to the Yanks) as a replacement.

The reason free agents don’t wanna come here and that players like Tex can’t wait to get the fuck out is because this is a team stuck on the perpetual treadmill of mediocrity.

Hicks is going to try to attach himself to whichever group wins. Whether it be him, Gilbert, or Greenberg he is trying his damndest to stay involved. by WyoRanger on Dec 8, 2009 2:14 PM CST up reply actions

Right....

Neither Greenberg nor Gilbert are close to being wealthy enough to pull off the deal alone (Jim Crane has a lot more money than both of them combined). So, keeping Hicks in the ownership group with, say, a 10% interest means they have to raise $50 million less to get the deal done. That may not be a small consideration.

Also, while MLB and the banks clearly have significant input, Hicks is still part of the decision making process as to who wins, so throwing him a bone may not be a bad move for a prospective owner.

So, if Hicks will stay out of the way, having him keep a small percent of equity ownership in the deal, as compared to potentially more debt financing, isn’t necessarily a bad thing. And, given how the last six months have gone, I really don’t see MLB signing off on a deal that keeps him in anything other than a minor, substantially non-public role.

by Darrell McKown on Dec 8, 2009 2:20 PM CST up reply actions

thanks ab03… and yes, I wanted Greenberg from the begining especially now that it seems like Nolan might leave if Gilbert buys it (and maybe even JD)… And as it is, I like the combo of JD and Nolan in the FO a whole lot.

You get Hicks’ money without any of Hicks’ crappy decision making. My guess is that Hicks desperately wants to keep some of the team since he’s spent the past decade putting millions into it and is only now starting to see a winning team in the near future.

Might not be bad move for Gammons

because MLB’s 8 hours of in game coverage highlight show was much better than ESPN’s one hour BBTN plus they also do games.

Sweet

They were at the Wyndham Anatole the last time they were in Dallas- I dropped by for about 30 minutes just to walk around the lobby after Jamey’s book release party earlier that night.

I saw Mark Shapiro getting off a shuttle bus, and a bunch of people milling around the hotel lobby. Not that exciting. I hear the Rule 5 is open to the public, so I might try and attend that next year. Plus Will Carroll should be in town, so perhaps we can arrange a little Will-Josey nemesis confrontation…

I went to the meetings in 2005 at the Anatole

I was trying to get a job in minor league baseball back then. I got a few offers, all of them were basically slave labor in podunk towns. It was like a feeding frenzy for the job seekers.

It’s a great people watching opportunity though. I sat next to Hank Aaron at lunch, rode the elevator with Frank Thomas, and almost knocked Omar Minaya down turing a corner.

Good times.

Um, I don't know

You’d stick out like crazy if you were just there hanging out. It’s not really the place to go up and ask for autographs and that sort of thing.

Basically, there are 3 groups of people at these things. The job seekers (who you can identify because they are wearing suits and have IDs/laynards), media (obvious), and baseball types. Anyone else sticks out quite a bit.

I saw more baseball people than I ever have in one place before, but I only talked to a handful of players/personnel type — and that’s including one guy I knew who was in media relations for the Rangers at the time.

It’s interesting, but not THAT interesting if you follow me.

What the hell are the Diamondbacks thinking?

Not to pile on, but seriously… I just can’t believe the Diamondbacks agreed to this. Scherzer had a 3.87 FIP last season and a 2.76 K/BB, at age 25, and is under team control for 5 years.

Jackson posted a 4.28 FIP last season and a 2.30 K/BB, at at 26, and is under team control for 2 years.

They must be really high on Ian Kennedy for some reason… or they must know more about Scherzer’s health.

Manuel chat

Evan Grant mentioned at the beginning of the chat that Brad Ausmus was one of the names being considered for the backup catcher spot.

That has to be a joke, because I’m pretty sure I could outhit Ausmus right now, and my baseball experience consists of three seasons of intramural & work league softball, plus a year of Pony League when I was a kid. I played catcher, too, so I also have that working in my favor. Not sure if I’m quite the clubhouse presence Ausmus is, though.

Why are so many people concerned about how great our catchers hit?

They are going to be hitting 8th and playing very sparingly. Its one thing when its a young guy because you want the best but when we are talking about a veteran backup catcher I am more concerned with his defense and his leadership than his hitting

Because

I’d rather not have a guy getting 150-200 AB’s who is pretty much an automatic out, no matter how good his defense and/or leadership skills are.

There’s a role for a 40-year-old with good leadership ability- it’s called “coach.”

anyone feel about making a play for melky cabrera now, sticking him in center and putting andrus in leadoff. wouldnt borbon be an outstanding trade chip for another piece or multiple lower level prospects who project well.

Whats wanting to compete now change?

cabrera in cf would allow us to compete faster than borbon, especially when you consider what we could get out of borbon, either in some package or being traded alone.i would consider lower level guys cause they can easily be thrown in another trade to get someone else of need. the idea would be to get the most value for borbon.

I disagree with that

Borbon is already a better hitter than Cabrera has ever been, and according to everyone’s defensive metric of choice around here (UZR) he’s minus -13.5 runs in CF (career).

Heck, Brandon Boggs could probably give you what Cabrera could, maybe more.

There really isn't any harm...

in them asking either. I mean, look at what they got from Arizona and NY for both Granderson and Jackson. I don’t think that’s far off from what they were asking for just Granderson from Boston. They did very well in that deal imo.

Putting it a bit mildly
I see this as a very solid deal for the Tigers. I’m underwhelmed by the D-Backs return, Yankees did okay

The Tigers, unless Scherzer turns into Brandon McCarthy, probably just made the trade of the offseason. The got the Yankees #1 or #2 prospect, the DBacks #2 or #3 prospect, a fairly young, very good starter in Scherzer, and a decent bullpen arm as a throw-in.

The Yanks got one of the most talented CFers in the game – Granderson is gonna crush at that bandbox in NY, and provide them with an anchor defensively in the OF.

The Diamondbacks, unless Kennedy turns out to be worth a shit, got squat.

I failed my LSB ethics test.

What the hell are the D-Back's doing?

I don’t get this trade from AZ’s perspective at all.

Seriously, Brian Cashman should not be allowed to make trades, I can’t remember one trade that he ‘lost’ in. He always seems to get quality player while given up very little or nothing (not saying Austin Jackson is nothing).
