he had a bad year
Nobody is arguing that. He has hit everywhere and everything else for years now. I’m pretty confidant he’ll get it back. All this has done is given me space to be the leader on the wagon.
Bad 2 years now

Huh?
I’d like to see your explanation for that. I’m pretty sure I’ll find it wanting.

Forgot he started 2008 in AA and tore it up

My bad
had to get the list up fast last night and missed him.

Main is not the 5th best prospect in this system.
I think Luke French has a lot of potential. TORP potential.-Dstar
+1
I don’t really understand how out of the two guys with extremely small track records (Ross and Main) the one who is perpetually injured and fell flat on his face this year wins out.
I still like Main, but he needs to have a big 2010 or he’ll be approaching Engel Beltre-land.
I failed my LSB ethics test.

Very dumb.
This is not a make or break year for Main. We’re talking about possibly the best athlete in the system, and you’ve already written him off somehow.

i don't think lsj was writing him off
for me, I just think I have to start seeing the performance on the field past the scouting reports we saw when he was drafted. he was in high A, but he has yet to be healthy for a full season.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Main has yet to pitch more than 61 innings in a year

You guys get carried away with last year.
Just blow it off. You might as well erase it from your memory. It was a lost year, period.

I think part of it for me with Main
Is that when he has pitched hes been at a decided advantage over the hitters due to missing so much time. In 08 he missed alot of time and then came back in instructs, alot fresher than any of the other players due to not pitching much during the season, and was amazing. Then this past season he was out with the illness/injury thing and once again came back at the end of the year alot fresher than most of the players he was facing and was really good.
Id like to see him stay healthy for a full season and see if he has the stamina to be as good in August as he’s been the last couple years

How am I "writing him off"?
All I said is I agree he’s not our #5 prospect. Being the best athlete in the system is great, but he also seems to be one of he more fragile ones in the system too. He has yet to make it through a full year without some type of injury/mystery illness.
I haven’t written him off by any means, but sooner or later he needs to show some signs of realizing his potential, just like MaxRam and Beltre.

best athlete in the system
explain to me how that matters for a pitcher.
I do think that it says a lot about the biases on this board when someone like main ends up at 5th. Maybe it’s because this board hasn’t been doing these rankings long enough but I think in a few years, we’ll correct this bias
Trip can explain it 10,000 times better than me
But Main’s athleticism allows him more margin for error. If he can harness his mechanics, he should be able to repeat an effortless delivery. This obviously bodes well for a starting pitcher’s durability. From all accounts, he is coachable, which means it is a matter of time before he puts it together.

i mean
that sounds like a good reason but not much better than a pitchet being tall. he has yet to pitch a full season and failed when he tried you are taking him at his word but when there are guys who are actually producing and somewhat projectable, they should be ahead of him
I won't be surprised if he shoots up prospect lists next year
and even if he doesn’t, I’m still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for a couple of years.
He has rare athletic ability and simply needs to put it to use and log the IP.

Well, once he starts to prove
He’s putting it together then I’ll rank him higher. Right now he’s at least behind Ross and Font. There is alot more to pitching than being athletic.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
There is a lot more to pitching than doing it against inferior talent, as Ross has done.
We don’t yet know that Ross’ stuff will hold up under a full season anymore than we know that about Main. So, I don’t really see how the “once he starts to prove…” argument favors Ross over Main.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
Well, Ross was really, really effing good this year
But that’s a good point. Although I have Ross ahead of Main, they’re both below Font and Gutz for me.

I, also, like that Ross, in his first pro season
pitched more innings than Main has in any of his years.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Which is why I voted for Gutierrez.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
I agree
and I’m still a big believer in Main. But I just can’t rank him ahead of Font or Ross right now.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I couldn't in good conscience put Main above Font, but I can still see the argument against Ross.
Ross simply hasn’t met his talent level. We don’t yet know how he will adapt when he does. Main hit a roadblock, but it’s hard to judge it, since he also had an illness that sapped him of his strength.
When Ross hits Hi-A, which if all goes extremely well should be middle of next season, then we can begin to talk about which of Main/Ross appears to have the higher ceiling. If Ross cruises through Hi-A that would be an indicator to me that he has something on a higher level than Main, who initially struggled greatly in Hi-A.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
Yeah, I'm still a little hesitant on Ross
I’m excited about what he’s done so far, but not sure he’ll keep it up. Main is the opposite, I’m sure he’ll put up sexy numbers at almost any level once he’s healthy and back in the swing of things again. I expect inconsistency from him early next season since he’s been out so much.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I get that something like a torn labrum
would be considered more heavily than this mystery illness. But I don’t think it’s legitimate to completely dismiss his mystery illness as if it were just the flu. For all of his potential, he is still in the injury risk category, which is why he is lower than Gutierrez (yes, I know that Gutierrez has been hurt, too) and Font for me. If you are ranking him 5th, it means his ceiling is significantly outweighing his risk, which basically means he needs to have a ceiling closer to Scheppers.
Also, I disagree with the “he has a chance, next year, to make us all look dumb for not obviously ranking him in the top 5”. So do any number of prospects. Where was Holland ranked after his first year? We’re ranking them based on ceiling and probability of getting there as they exist right now; I think that people aren’t weighing the risk that he doesn’t ever reach his ceiling heavily enough.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
Well, his mystery illness was diagnosed as a virus.
ceiling versus risk is a good argument. I feel the risk levels of NOT developing are similar for Font and Main. I previously felt Main was at less risk than Font for NOT developing. Hence, I went Font over Main at 5, despite my homerism for Main.
I have Ross as a higher risk of NOT developing than Main/Font because we haven’t seen Ross against higher level competition. I think it’s a fairly significant step between NWL and SAL.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
Don't forget that Font basically missed all of '08
He had shoulder, knee, and homesickness. He logged like 4 innings.
Ross here again
Font would be next, but I just like a guy who strikes guys out and keeps the ball on the ground. That’s a recipe for success.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Gutierrez again
Guess i’ll be voting him for awhile.

but MaxRam should already be on the list imo. I think it’s pretty likely that he will get some top ten votes from LSBers, even with a system this deep.
