Why would they pick their own guy

Wouldn’t they have just protected the guy on the 40?

by UNTJosh on Dec 8, 2009 9:39 PM CST up reply actions

Because of timing problems.

They wanted to find a suitor for Bruney, and they also didn’t want to lose whichever guy they didn’t protect. Bruney was a non-tender candidate anyway. For roster size sake, they traded Bruney for the option of protecting another player. If that player doesn’t stick on their 25, then other teams get the shot to get him through waivers, which would have happened anyway if someone else drafted that player. They essentially cleared salary and room with Bruney for the right to protect another of their players.

It’s not likely, but it’s a decent strategy if you’re strapped for 40 room at the protection deadline and have a player you’re planning on non-tendering anyway. They gave themselves the right of first refusal for Curtis or Whelan or whoever else they might want from their system.

by Andy Seiler on Dec 8, 2009 9:53 PM CST up reply actions

interesting

has that happened before?

why wouldnt they just have the nat’s take him and then return him? (or if hes returned does he have to stay on the 25 man?)

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

by knockoutking on Dec 9, 2009 9:36 AM CST up reply actions

Doesn't a guy have to be run through league-wide waivers before being offered back to his original club?

IIRC, that’s where we nabbed O’Day last year. Mets Rule 5’d him, decided they couldn’t keep him on the 25, put him on waivers, and we claimed him.

The Rangers have considered Mike Lowell as a possibility to play first base and DH, reports FOXSports.com’s Jon Paul Morosi.
The Lowell idea did not go past the consideration stage, according to Morosi’s source, who said that the current Red Sox third-baseman was “not as attractive as the alternatives.” It doesn’t stop Morosi from proposing a Kevin Millwood-Lowell swap, as both will earn $12 million in 2010. If the Rangers strike out on their alternatives, they could revisit Lowell.
