MLB Hot Stove Rumor Thread #2

With all the rumors and deals flying I felt compelled to start another thread.  One where we can focus on talking about all topics here.  It does get confusing when three or four different threads are going concerning similar stuff.

So everyone, post away.  Keep it here and just rec it.  Also lets rec the community prospect lists.

Update on Milly

WEDNESDAY, 10:02am: Millwood update: Zrebiec says the Rangers originally wanted David Hernandez and a low-level prospect for Millwood, and were willing to pay $3MM of the $12MM owed to the veteran.  Meanwhile Zrebiec's colleague Peter Schmuck says Chris Ray could be involved and the Rangers would pick up most of Millwood's salary, in one scenario.

Not sure what to make of this whole Millwood thing yet.  I wanna see how its played out by us.  The potential buyers are definitely keeping an eye on it as well I assume.

I don't see us a major player for Bradley given what has already been said, but our name still is getting linked to him.

I vote “no” to any Millwood trade at this juncture that is not a ridiculously one-sided in the Rangers’ favor.

Millwood

Would you trade Millwood’s 198 innings of decent pitching for Chris Ray and Jermaine Dye? I wouldn’t. And right now that is what we are looking at with zero savings because of the money we would kick in for Baltimore and the money we would spend on Dye. No thanks.

Jermaine Dye

will probably not get more than $5-6M this year. And that could potentially be a bargain. He seems to be following the exact same story line that Abreu followed last year.

my understanding is the with the trade for Chris Ray,

Baltimore would pick up the full salary. I think the report above is off on this point

I think the Orioles are selling very very low o Ray,

He had 2 very successful seasons before the surgery. We could be getting an Eric Gagne like reliever who needs to capitalize on an opportunity with another bull club.

He is still young and has 2 more controllable years I believe. Worth Millwood and his contract.

In the end it could be Ray, a RHBAT, and a lefty pen for millwood if you think about it that way. The money saved from Millwood could net us better options at those two positions than if we didn’t free up more money.

a mediocre at best season then missed a year and then was horrible last year. Im not giving up Kevin Millwood for that. We could get him for much less than Millwood.

He had TJ in late 2007.
It wasn’t until the following season in 2007 that something peculiar began happening.

Chris lost his dominance, but being the warrior that he is, kept on insisting nothing was wrong. Despite having discomfort in his elbow, even taking drugs to ease the swelling and null the pain, Chris still insisted he felt fine.

Ultimately, management decided on July 25 it was time to put Ray on the disabled list.

A few more weeks of throwing and more pain, and by Aug. 16, it was time for ligament replacement surgery.

okay, the surgery makes me feel better..

and last year he seemed a little wild both out of and in the zone (lots of walks and hits) which as we all know is the result of the first year coming off TJ….still had a 8+k/9….

If they pick up all of his salary we better use it for upgrades (rh bat and high upside starter)….if we do, then we turn milly into 3 useful and needed pieces.

What’s not to like besides losing Millwood’s innings?

Like someone said yesterday,

those inning can be made up between so many guys right now not to mention a possible upgrade to a ben sheets with the money we save. Doing that would be fine with me. Ben sheets and Chris Ray plus a RH bat for Millwood! Im down with that. Of course it’s a risk with injuries and such but the reward could help us take that next jump into the playoffs.

Harden may only pitch 80-150 innings..

But I’m less than positive the other three reach 100 combined.

I’d still like to have Sheets on the roster just in case though, how much money could he possibly demand after missing an entire year and with no real signs of health yet.

Milly

It depends on what the budget situation really is for the Rangers.

If keeping Millwood means signing no other significant assets I think you have to deal the guy. If you can trade him and free up about $8-10MM and get a decent piece towards next years club I think you have to do it. You can use that money towards a decent middle of the order bat, probably some sort of LAIE, and a reliever (if a reliever isn’t coming over in the deal).

O's close to deal for Millwood
The Orioles are nearing an agreement on a trade that would send reliever Chris Ray to the Texas Rangers for veteran starter Kevin Millwood and some cash, according to multiple team sources.

The cash would help offset some of the $12 million owed to Millwood for the 2010 season. Many of the particulars have been agreed upon, but the there are still a few details to work out, including a review of medical records.

Satisfying the Orioles’ need for a veteran innings eater at the top of the rotation, Millwood, 34, went 13-10 last season with a 3.67 last year while pitching 198 2/3 innings.

Ray, the Orioles former closer before he needed ligament-reconstruction surgery on his right elbow, struggled last season, going 0-4 with a 7.27 ERA in 46 appearances. The 27-year-old has 49 career saves for the Orioles.

More details to follow

I would be much happier if there was another low level prospect included

I still think Texas ends up with Bradley

Millwood goes to Balt and we save 9M or so. Bradley comes to Texas with the Cubs eating 15 of this 21 M left. Spend 6M on Sheets or Harden in a heavy incentive deal

Harden

There is no way he comes here on a 1 year 6 Million deal. No way. He could get that deal from probably 8 other teams, many of whom would be much better suited to rehabbing his value. There is just no way from my perspective.

Underwhelmed

Ray’s an injury risk who walks people, and Millwood was inconsistent but provided a lot of innings and a couple of very fine months.

Plus I’d think with other teams hovering, there’d be greater demand than just a young relief pitcher coming back.

I wonder if there’s another piece coming with Ray (agree with Laxtonto, here’s hoping). And, like other comments say, this creates an innings vacuum, and lots of expectations on young pitching.

I have a feeling the freed up cash is going towards Lackey or, here’s hoping, Rich Harden.

Chris Ray

Is underwhelming. Even in his best years he was more of a setup man than a closer; he walks too many and doesn’t keep the ball down, as sexy as his K rate is.
However, I think we all have to temper our expectations as to Milwood’s value. He’s a 34-year old pitcher who put up a FIP of 4.8 last year and is on the books for 11 million dollars. If you can get a setup man to give you 50 innings of 4-ERA ball while shedding the contract and using the money on someone like Nick Johnson, It’s a positive move.

According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles and Rangers are "nearing an agreement on a trade" that would send former O’s closer Chris Ray to Texas for Kevin Millwood and "some cash," according to multiple Orioles team sources. Zrebiec writes that "[m]any of the particulars have been agreed upon, but the there are still a few details to work out, including a review of medical records."

Ray, a righthander, had Tommy John surgery on his elbow in August 2007.

i know

why are we giving up on millwood? he had a sub-4 ERA last year and pitched nearly 200 innings. I guess we could be selling high, but that is hard to do when you have a 34-year old set to make 12 million dollars. You aren’t gonna get much in return for that…..

The deal better have the O’s taking at least 10 million off our hands and it better lead to us signing a possible TORP and another need (right handed bat)

Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas.com reports that the Rangers have asked about Diamondbacks infielder Augie Ojeda.
Ojeda, 35, is arbitration-eligible this winter and would fit the bill as the type of utility man the Rangers are seeking. He batted .246/.340/.345 with one home run and 16 RBI in 264 at-bats with Arizona in ’09 while playing second base, third base and shortstop.
