Rich Harden a Ranger?

Wow, Adam picked quite a day to be in court all day.

As noted in the comments below, NBCsports.com is reporting this, a one year deal for $7.5 million. I'm very psyched about this prospect, as I'm sure most Rangers fans would be.

UPDATE: More sources seem to be saying Harden to the Mariners than the Rangers right now. Will be interesting to hear how this all played out once it's over.

what I see on ESPN is this at 4:17 CST:

UPDATE: Buster Olney reports via the Hot Stove this afternoon that “Sources say that Rich Harden is on the verge of an agreement. It was not immediately known which team signed him, but he has been heavily involved in negotiations with the Mariners.”

That doesn’t actually say Seattle definitively. We’ll see.

Creativity

When I heard Levine say that the Rangers would not keep their current financial situation form helping them improve and that the team would be creative to find a solution, I kinda thought he was just saying what the fans wanted to hear.

But the one year club option is incredible.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

Here is where it stands:

The Rangers trade Kevin Millwood to the Orioles for reliever Chris Ray.

They pick up $3 million in salary as part of the deal.

They save about $7 million in the transaction and Ray goes into the Rangers bullpen.

The Rangers sign Rich Harden for $7.5 million and a club option for $11.5 million.

Harden goes into the Rangers rotation,

A club official says it’s close, adding, “It’s been a productive few days.”

The Mariners are also going after Harden.

Nothing has been announced. Much medical history must be reviewed for everybody involved.

I know this is a good day, but big bang theory is maybe the worst show I have seen in a really long time.

I saw last week’s episode (Gorilla project):

-the most annoying laugh track ever

-nerd voices? are they serious?

-terribly nerd jokes (“more does not equal merry. that is not an equal relationship”)

gah. horrible.

by ab03 on Dec 9, 2009 5:18 PM CST up reply actions

Are you serious? The show is quickly becoming the most popular sitcom on television

The nerd jokes are part of the point. Sheldon is an outrageously smart physicist with almost no social skills and no concept of how the world works outside his bubble.

The more does not equal merry comment was classic Sheldon: he hears a common saying and doesn’t understand, because it’s logically fallacious.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. Why not Cantu?

I mean, unless Boston is going to pick up 8-9 million dollars of his contract, what does Lowell give you that Cantu does not? They are both about .800 OPS players at this point in their careers. Both can play 1B/DH/3B. Lowell is a flat out terrible defensive 3B. Cantu is at least decent at 1B, and he also has great numbers versus LHP.

I’m not a huge fan of either addition, but I’d rather explore a deal for Cantu over Lowell. I think it is more likely the Rangers could work out a fair deal for Cantu than get Boston to throw in 8 million for Lowell.

Rangers close to one-year deal with Harden — 6:04 p.m.

The Rangers are putting their savings from the Kevin Millwood trade to good use.

Free-agent right-hander Rich Harden is close to signing a one-year contract with the Rangers, according to a major-league source.

The deal, valued at $7.5 million according to published reports, qualifies as one of the biggest surprises of the winter meetings.

The Rangers, in the middle of an ownership transition, will save $9 million by trading Millwood to the Orioles. Most of that money will be reallocated to Harden.

When healthy, Harden is a dominant, top-of-the-rotation starter. However, he has been hampered by injuries throughout his career.

thank you

And that would also confirm the Millwood trade since JD wouldn’t sigh Harden unless he dealt Millwood. Does JD have any other magic tricks up his sleeve?

From Evan
Also, there is the possibility the Rangers could use Ray in a deal to fix their catching depth situation. The Rangers have interest in Tampa Bay’s Dionner Navarro, who should make about $2.5-$3 million in 2010. The Rays, according to the lobby rumor mill, have always liked Ray.

Interesting. I’m not sure what to make of Ray, but Navarro, while awful last year, could be an interesting buy-low candidate. My only concern is that it spends the rest of the money and no bat was acquired. Enter Bradley/Lowell? At the very least, there’s this:

It appears that Jason Kendall is fading as a catching option. Kansas City has offered a two-year deal to Kendall and the Rangers have no intention of offering two years.

I think Harden is worth what they’re paying him, but he’s not an ace. Aces pitch more than 150 innings and Harden has only done that once. And that was a long time ago.

Love the Harden deal on an individual basis

Still don’t think it helps us get to the playoffs however.

Now with the 2011 option that will be awesome if we exercise it. A rotation of Harden, Feldman (3 years as a starter, Hunter (essentially 2 years as a starter), Holland (1.5 years as a starter), and Feliz (hopefully only half a year at most as a starter). That will be a formidable rotation.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
