ESPN Dallas reporting Millwood deal as done
Richard Durrett has the terms. If the reports about Rich Harden agreeing with Texas are true, this deal presumably had to be official for the signing to happen.

I’m not a big fan of this move UNLESS it is coupled by a revenue neutral signing of another pitcher. I’d rather have Ray + Harden than Millwood

So whats the offseason checklist look like now?
-Get the closest thing to a TORP as possible√
-Get a utility player √ (Inglett counts for now)
-Get a middle of the order bat
-Get a DH
-Solve the catching problem
-Get a solid backup OF
Now time to solve the OF/DH/Middle of the order bat problem all at once
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
we don't need a backup outfielder
we’ve got Hamilton, Cruz, Murphy, Borbon, and then Boggs and/or Gentry if we need them.
with a 5th outfielder your biggest concern is fielding
and they’re both fantastic fielders.
he Rangers and Red Sox are discussing a deal that would send Mike Lowell to Texas, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. The trade is “possible, but not close,” according to Bradford’s source. It’s possible that catcher Max Ramirez would come to Boston in exchange for Lowell. Joe McDonald of the Providence Journal echoes Bradford’s report.
Lowell third baseman is set to earn $12MM next year, his last season before free agency.
i hope we dont make this trade
but i certainly would understand if we did. it makes a whole lot of sense for each side. Im an admitted sucker for max ramirez.

Is Lowell going to be a Type B next offseason?
If he is, I could see it making sense for the Rangers to get Lowell for MaxRam with Boston throwing in a ton of cash. Then, the Rangers offer Lowell arb and let him go find some other team while the Rangers just find themselves another MaxRam (as far his prospect value is concerned). That’s pretty much the only reason I could think of for JD to trade MaxRam for Lowell unless he’s just taking a chance on MaxRam never raising his value up past where it is now (which is possible with anything much less than a repeat of his 08 numbers)
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
I think Lowell on a 1 year deal would be attractive to a lot of teams
and as long as Lowell doesn’t collapse this year, he’s going to go into FA next year expecting more than an arbitration settlement. He also might just not want to play in Texas past next year and might want to finish his career somewhere else.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."

Accepting Arb
I would be very leery of offering arb to Lowell (should he become a Ranger). He’d probably stand to make more in the arb process than on the open market (especially if the injuries continue).

Catcher
But the Rangers have a spot at catcher where they could play Rodriguez had he accepted. Next season, with a new owner, I would hope the Rangers can do better than Lowell on the FA market.
by Excel Hearts Choi on Dec 9, 2009 6:00 PM CST up reply actions
The difference between the two
is that Lowell is making more than 12mill, and nobody gets a paycut in arbitration. He’d be lucky to get half that on the free agent market.

by Excel Hearts Choi on Dec 9, 2009 6:12 PM CST up reply actions
Im down with Lowell
Max Ramirez for a 2010 DH is a no-brainer in my mind. Do I think MaxRam has the chance to be great? Absolutely. Do we need a right-handed DH next year? check. Guys we will have to trade prospect talent to get what we need and if we only lose MaxRam to get it, so be it. I want to win next year.
Look at his overall career OPS+ vs Garko
Identical, and some think Garko is just a lefty masher.
I’m still thinking low dollar signing in the end.

Klaw on Harden deal
Rich Harden is an ideal one-year flier for any club with the ability to gamble on a spot in its rotation. But the emphasis is on “gamble”.
There’s a chance of a zero or near-zero return, because Harden could blow out his shoulder opening a can of tuna. That said, the guy has pitched as a front-line starter during his occasional bouts of health. The injuries, however, account for the fact that Harden has only qualified for one ERA title, and as recently as late 2007 he couldn’t keep his fastball above 90.
But in Chicago last year he was mostly 90-94 and flashing better, with an out pitch split-change in the mid-80s. He’s pitched close to full seasons the last two years and if the Rangers can make sure they have a backup starter available for his inevitable month stay on the DL, they’ve got value. If you think about it, adding 20-25 good starts to that rotation could very well help push them closer to the top of the division.
I did note in my scouting report on Harden — I had him at No. 20 among my Top 50 Free Agents — that he was suddenly very homer-prone in 2009, and he’s returning to the AL and will be in a decent home run park in Texas, so that’s another potential caveat. But again, one year and just $7.5 million is a steal for a shot at a potential top-end starter. Harden gives Texas a good chance to replace what they’re losing from Kevin Millwood after they trade him to Baltimore.
HAHAHA!
@lonestarball @bobanddan “Millwood is a horse.” Did you see Millwood in the second half last season? The only horse he looked like then was Barbaro.

I haven’t seen many traditional style sitcoms on TV that have actually been good. i think the worst part about it
is that it either thinks that it appeals to smart people or it just makes fun of smart people thinking that that’s how they act in the real world. Either way, it is just so horribly wrong. News flash, physics PhD students don’t all have nasally voices. You could just use your regular voice. It doesn’t make it any more funny to use a nasally voice.
I could seriously go on for a while
Actually, the "smart people" love it
They have a UCLA physicist consulting to make sure they get the physics right. Nobel physics laureate Dr. George Smoot wrote the producers asking to make a guest appearance on the show because he found it so hilarious and fitting of the physics profession.
I have far more social skills than Sheldon, but I’ve been called a nerd plenty in my life and I’ve found shades of him in me, as well as in certain friends of mind.
Rather than “making fun of smart people”, I think it actually glorifies intellectuals and portrays them in a lovable light.
