Jones

Is he a good guy? Are Beltre and Borbon gonna learn a thing or two from him about CF?

The moves being made are too extra for my taste.

A few years ago,

He used to be very edgy and he would overreact in anger towards the smallest things. But I hear he’s better now.

Well...

At least this is more fun to discuss than A-Rod news.

So, how many people thought Andruw Jones and Brendan Donnelly would have jobs before Manny Ramirez this year, let alone with the Rangers?

Yeah. Spies. They're little guys with beady eyes and long fingernails. They plant bugs that can pick up the hush of a man's heartbeat - or the whisper of a falling hair.

They don't have jobs, yet.

So, how many people thought Andruw Jones and Brendan Donnelly would have jobs know which training camps they where headed to before Manny Ramirez this year, let alone with the Rangers be going to Surprise?

I think AJ's opt out is too early.

But, I suppose it should be readily apparent if he is in shape and motivated early on.

Hijack!

In a fantasy baseball league, where you represent the Rangers and then get to pick 5 players pre-season to have before the draft. What five do you pick? The top three are pretty obvious: Hamilton, Davis, Kinsler. The other two I’ve got are Young and Frankie. I’m torn on going with Cruz over one of those two.

by tdi1985 on Feb 10, 2009 5:28 PM CST reply actions

Since Young will probably have 2 position eligibility

he’s a good pick.

Frankie is a little more risky, since its always possible he completely flops at closer. Cruz is a good alternative, but I’d say Salty may be a good pick as well, if you think he’ll get good playing time between C, 1b, and DH.

by JBImaknee on Feb 10, 2009 5:40 PM CST up reply actions

Salty

I’m doing this format in another league where you pick 10 players, and I definitely got Salty for that one. I feel pretty good about Young as well, especially because of the position eligibility.

by tdi1985 on Feb 10, 2009 5:51 PM CST up reply actions

That's how I'd do it

Young being able to play at 3B and SS will help you out and Frankie’s going to be closing so you got to go with him. If this is a keeper league though, I’d go with Salty over Young.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Jones

I like the Jones signing.. at the minimum, it adds pressure on Byrd and Cruz to perform. Best case scenario, you have a major talent that turns it around and is a key player for years to come, or a nice trade piece. If he equals the output of Byrd or Murphy, it allows you to trade one of Byrd or Murphy in ST or at the deadline. You can then say good bye to Jones, or give him another go around in ’10.. you still have Borbon, Hamilton and Cruz roaming.

Anyone wonder why they don’t look to put Hamilton in LF? Cruz has major cannon for RF, probably better than Hamilton, and the throws from LF would save Hamilton’s shoulder (Was it just me, or did it seem like Hamilton was always rubbing his shoulder after a big throw?)

So what are the chances...

that Wash is the Rangers manager past ’09?

I’d say maybe 25%.

Good question

I’m admittedly not sure who all the candidates would be currently, but I do remember the list of guys we where rumored to be considering last April (Mike Hargrove, Don Baylor and Jim Tracy where among them, if memory serves) was pretty uninspiring.

I’d imagine though, that if Wash gets fired sometime this year Jackie Moore will take over, probably at least for the remainder of the season. He is Nolan’s handpicked man in the clubhouse, after all.

Yeah. Spies. They're little guys with beady eyes and long fingernails. They plant bugs that can pick up the hush of a man's heartbeat - or the whisper of a falling hair.

by LSJ on Feb 11, 2009 2:10 AM CST up reply actions

Addendum to that:

If I had criteria for someone I’d like to see replace Wash, I’d hope we could get someone who at least knows how to use common sense and some kind of sabermetric knowledge in the organization of his lineup card and bullpen managment (instead of this “I went with my gut” and “you have to have this much experience to hit this high in the lineup” bullshit) and someone who actually knows how to utilize “small ball” techniques in a baseball game instead of someone who likes to use small ball techniques in a baseball game.

Basically, just someone who knows how to, you know, MANAGE.

Unfortunately, there’s still a pretty large shortage of those kinds of managers in baseball theses days… but still, we need to at least try to attain some improvement over Washington.

they need to have a good start this year

if that happens, then they definately can hang around the Angels near the top of the standings, but if they have another slow start in april/may, i doubt that Washington lasts beyond this year.

Total hypothetical situation

but if we didn’t have Blalock on the roster coming into this off season, would you have been for signing Adam Dunn in this market?

I can’t help but feel that 40 HR alone is worth the price of a Ben Broussard tryout. Hell, tack on 3-5 more million. I would take his combo of power/strikeouts over Ryan Howard’s any day.

They playing him at 1B?

They can’t possibly do that, because 1B is so difficult to learn, and he has never played 1B before. I mean, its absolute rocket science to play 1B.
