Adam Dunn to the Nationals
Adam Dunn is going to the Washington Nationals on a 2 year, $20 million deal.
Less than he wanted, more than it appeared he was going to get.
It will be interesting to see where he plays, since the Nats already are paying a lot of money to first basemen Dmitri Young and Nick Johnson, and have a plethora of outfielders hanging around.

Seems like a fair deal to me
given the current market conditions.

Wow
People were talking about getting Dunn for less than we are paying Blalock.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

What? The Nationals like outfielders...
Maxwell, Davis and Bernadina are already ticketed for Triple-A…still, there are about 4 outfielders too many…

Austin Kearns
I believe he will be a FA after this next season, and he is limping to the finish line on his current deal. With the state of the market, he shouldn’t be very expensive next offseason and may even be available as an NRI. He is still an excellent defensive OF but seems like lack confidence and consistency at the plate. With some help, I think he could be a solid candidate to replace Byrd as our 4th OF. He is from Austin and would likely jump at the chance to work with Rudy. Just something to keep in mind.

Rudy is such a great asset
for the Rangers.
Worth every penny Hicks pays him just for the amount of inquiries from hitters looking to resurrect their careers.
Of course, then we have to filter through those players :p.

He'd certainly make a better reclamation project than Andruw Jones

im wondering that too
he may be easier to resurrect to his typical performance level, but that level isnt really anything special. i feel we could get his performance or better from a byrd or a boggs or possible even murphy. he had one really nice (rookie season) and has been pretty underwhelming since then.
maybe jon is trying to say something about how dim his outlook is for the jones project.
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Feb 11, 2009 7:44 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well, Kearns is younger
And unlike Andruw, his struggles could be due more to his various injuries rather than a complete meltdown of his ability.
It’s definitely true he’s nowhere near the player Andruw was or could be again, but I think we’d have a better chance of getting him back to a useful level (a la Byrd) out of him than we do Andruw.

Next year we won't have much use for him though
With Borbon likely locked down in CF, Hamilton in RF, Murphy and Boggs in LF, and Golson in AAA. Thats not counting Cruz who I feel will not be with the team anymore.

Just because his name is Austin.....
Kearns is from Kentucky. And he is only a good 4th OF if you coddle him, the dude is fragile, an accident waiting to happen.

also
with Abreu and Dunn off the board, I think the Braves are either calling the Yanks about their OF surplus, or the Rangers about Byrd. And Byrd probably has the advantage because of his friendly contract and ability to play CF, where the Braves currently lack an obvious option.

Byrd
strikes me as one of those guys that will go somewhere else and turn into an all star.

Might I ask why?
His rep was an all-field, no-hit 4th/5th OF when he came here. He seems more like the type of guy to leave here, get more of a contract he deserves, and regress, a la GMJ.

For a part-time player
He’s averaged an 828 obps — not great, not bad, and played abover average defense. He’s also clutch. Maybe I’m wrong, but he just strikes me as a guy who would thrive playing everyday in a corner outfield spot. Then again, he may be GMJ version 2.0.

Byrd is probably more DeRo than GMJ
Byrd’s going to end up leaving here for a nice little pay day and play a few more years as an above average player.

Good chance of this
though I don’t know if I’d say above average. I’d say useful, valuable, but maybe not a few more years as above average.

Byrd is 31
and will be 32 during this season. He’s playing in a very good offensive situation. It’s hard to see why he’d take another big step up at that age or older and more than likely in a worse offensive environment.
by Brett Perryman on Feb 11, 2009 9:17 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe...
Alls I’m saying is if he gets pushed out by the Andrew Joneses of the world, he will go somewhere and thrive — not because of any rational, measurable reason, just because that sort of thing is the type of luck the Ranger’s have.
I do, however, happen to believe that if Byrd gets 600+ abs here, he could produce better than Murphy, who I, and many others, believe will regress.
