Saturday a.m. things

Spring training is finally here, so we are getting notes and reports from Surprise...

Anthony Andro writes that Josh Hamilton doesn't care where he plays...right, center, DH occasionally, he's fine with it.

C.J. Wilson says he's 100% healthy, and Ron Washington says Justin Smoak is a gym rat.

Jim Reeves has a column up on the Andruw Jones signing, and thinks that if he does stick, Nelson Cruz shouldn't be the guy squeezed out.

Jeff Wilson runs down the key questions for the Rangers this spring.

T.R. Sullivan says there is going to be a lot of competition this spring.  I don't really see it...the catching situation is in flux, of course, and Andruw Jones could change some things, but other than that, the only real competition appears to be for a couple of bullpen spots.

Sullivan also says good health is key for the Rangers pitching staff.

Jean-Jacques Taylor runs down the top 10 leaders in the D/FW sports scene, with three Rangers making the cut.

Typo - Smoak is a gym "rat"...

I would like to see Hamilton in RF as well, but it’s interesting that he mentions CF, RF, DH and no LF. So that means if Jones shows well in ST that Cruz would have to play LF if he keeps his job as Reeves says he should, and I agree, Cruz should be playing everyday to start the year.

I get the feeling that Jones will opt out after a decent ST when told he won’t be a starter.

Cruz

I really don’t know that he’d have a problem playing left, and I hope he gets some time there in spring training.

he will have a decent spring (.270-.280) be named the starting CF and then squeeze out cruz or byrd whether right or wrong.

No doubt

That is because Hamilton is humble because of what he went through and he just wants to play ball. FFace never had to deal with those kind of problems.

Sheesh, look at the reaction I get

from saying something semi nice about Young. My post was a reply to what I felt like was someone saying Hamilton is a better person than Young because he was an addict, and it applies to everyone else on the team that stayed straight, not just Young. Young is by all appearances a solid person, good husband and father who shows up to work every day and does his job. Hamilton went through a loooooong period where he was absolutely worthless to everyone in the world except his dealer. His wife is a freakin’ saint.

Hamilton is rightfully humble about what he’s been through. But in my opinion, anyone who deals with the money and wealth of being a famous ballplayer, movie star, etc. without doing what Hamilton did does indeed deserve some credit. I would have been more likely to become Hamilton than Young and I can’t imagine living in the bubble they do.

I get that you hate Young, but you (and others here) don’t have to reflexively put him down at every opportunity. That just makes you like Josey in his hatred for Daniels.

Nobody said anything even remotely close to "Hamilton is a better person than Young because he was an addict".

He just said that Hamilton’s (admittedly self-inflicted) ordeal made him more humble when it comes to feeling entitled to things on the baseball field. While that might make him an easier player to root for, it in now way shape or form is saying that because he’s a former addict he’s therefor a better person than Face.

And:

But in my opinion, anyone who deals with the money and wealth of being a famous ballplayer, movie star, etc. without doing what Hamilton did does indeed deserve some credit.

You need to raise your standards. I’m not going to start giving credit to rich guys who don’t become crack addicts. I’m sorry but I’m just not.

Where I realized he was overpaid, overrated and overhyped. And I have to say, I never really bought into the whole “MY is the glue of the clubhouse” BS either. I’m sure your hatred is sincere, not shtick. I agree that he was an ass about the move, but I also sympathize with a guy who worked his ass off te get better at SS after moving there for the sake of the team — and is now forced to face the fact that all that hard work still left him inadequate as a SS and he’s being replaced by a younger guy.

As I await my 40th birthday this year I sympathize with someone facing a decline I guess. And the guy does lots of charity work and is a committed family man. So, while I hate how he acted this offseason about the move, I don’t hate him completely.

Hate away

Keep in mind that my replies to boomer was really a rant against a general mindset, not necessarily you personally. Young went from underrated to overrated and has almost swung back to underrated (though certainly not underpaid) here on these boards all in the space of 3-4 years. If your baseball knowledge was limited to these boards you’d have to assume he was completely awesome but then hit like Andruw Jones in 2008 while playing defense like Don Zimmer (the 2008 version).

Neither do I

that’s why I posted that. None of us has the faintest idea what Young has faced and to say someone who stayed on an even keel is somehow less a person than someone who hit rock bottom before coming back up is ridiculous to me. We should all admire people who don’t do stupid things like get addicted to drugs no matter what happens in their life. Hamilton became an addict out of boredom it appears. I should admire that?

I admire his family and especially his grandmother and wife more than him. Their talent for perseverance exceeds his talent for baseball in my opinion, and that’s saying something.

Bah, I’ll stop talking about this now, my first post was an overreaction to what boomer said anyways. But I feel like people are taking potshots at Young for no good reason now. I will actively join fair criticism of Young, but there are many times here where it just feels like character assassination. He may have acted like an ass or a few days about the 3B change, but that doesn’t mean he’s an asshole in life. His contract sucks, but that doesn’t mean he’s evil.

No Competition?

Im not really understanding you there. There definitely seems to be quite a few active roster spots up.

2 OF positions, Catching position, 4th and 5th OF spots, Utility Inf Spot, several bullpen spots, and several rotation spots. There always has been ‘competion’ for bullpen and rotation spots in the past, but i think we also have a pretty big battle on our hands between Murphy, Byrd, Cruz, Jones, and Boggs as to who deserves what position on the OF depth chart 2 through 5. There usually isnt such a flux like the in the OF positions.

Chris (NJ): I am personally offended at how you ranked a prospect from my favorite team, even though I do not know said prospect, nor have I ever seen him play. In my opinion you only have your job because, like your employers, you have an unholy bias towards my favorite team’s rival. Also, you’re short.

Keith Law: You’re right. I am short.

by blalock84 on Feb 14, 2009 10:06 AM CST reply actions

OF competition

I don’t see as much competition as you. Boggs is destined for AAA like it or not. Byrd is a lock unless hes traded and based on his relationship with Washington most likely will get as close to everyday playing time as anyone not named Hamilton. Cruz is more in competition with himself than anyone else. If he comes in and performs he will get another shot to play in the majors. If not theres a good chance any shot he does receive will be elsewhere. Murphy is a virtual lock. If he hits lefties it will only increase his playing time IMO. And Jones just has to perform. If he does then he will probably take Cats spot. I don’t see him pushing anyone out or to the minors if he makes the team.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Feb 14, 2009 12:18 PM CST up reply actions

I think the roster is pretty much set

There is no reason Jones should make the roster and the team has already said they want Murphy to start in LF, Cruz is in RF, and Byrd is likely going to be the 4th OF. The team hasn’t said anything about Boggs which makes me believe he’s going to be starting in the minors unless Cat gets cut. Salty gets the “official” starting catching spot. Vizquel is the starting SS with Duran being the utility IF until Andrus comes up. The rotation is Millwood, Padilla, Harrison, Feldman, McCarthy. So yeah, unless the team decides they don’t want to win and don’t want to rebuild, that is what’s going to come out of ST. The only question is who makes the last few spots in the bullpen.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Feb 14, 2009 12:21 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

If jones plays well I think he replaces Cat. The catching competition is relative: it is really only about playing time and not who makes the roster. Holland may be the only wild card for SP spots but all of the candidates need innings including Jennings so AAA makes the most sense for all those outside the fav 5. The bullpen is really the only area of competition. First we see who is healthy then whether they go with vets over youngsters if it comes down to that.

by Goyogringo on Feb 14, 2009 12:49 PM CST up reply actions

Rupe

Rupe seems to be competing with Nippert for the long relief role if Wash’s comments can be taken at face value, which would seem to make Rupe a likely AAA guy at the start of the season as he has an option left.

x
2 OF positions, Catching position, 4th and 5th OF spots, Utility Inf Spot, several bullpen spots, and several rotation spots.

I don’t think there is a competition for any of the OF spots, except as it relates to Andruw Jones. Everything else is already set.

I don’t think there’s a competition for the UIF spot. That’s Vizquel, unless Andrus starts the season in the minors, in which case it is Duran.

I don’t think there’s a competition for the rotation. With Hurley down, it is Millwood, Padilla, McCarthy, Harrison, Feldman, unless someone gets hurt or is just a disaster in spring training.

I think several bullpen spots are set. Francisco, Wilson, Guardado, and Rupe are set. That leaves three spots for Turnbow, Eyre, Donnelly, Nippert, Madrigal, and a couple of other guys.

So you’ve got the back of the bullpen and the catcher job where there’s really competition. That’s it.

1B or SS as anything approaching a competition. Andrus is the guy even if he doesn’t actually start the season there and Blalock is not going to displace Davis.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Feb 14, 2009 4:58 PM CST up reply actions

Okay

First base — no competition.

Shortstop — no competition. Either Andrus is ready, in which case the job is his, or he isn’t, in which case the job is Vizquel’s. That’s not a competition.

UIF — no competition. If Andrus is ready, it is Vizquel. If not, it is Duran.

Outfield — no competition. You have your four guys from last year. Andruw Jones, like Andrus, will either show he’s major league caliber, in which case he sticks and Byrd is probably traded, or else he isn’t, but either way, once again, there isn’t a competition.

by Adam J. Morris on Feb 14, 2009 7:55 PM CST up reply actions

It wouldn’t surprise me to see Arias displace Duran for UIF guy – especially if he’s got a little better pace on his throws.

The moves being made are too extra for my taste.

I wouldn't say...

there is no competition in the OF.

by slc ranger on Feb 14, 2009 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

To me

…there may be competition, but aside from Andruw, next to nothing should be decided by ST performance. These are all players who have been in this organization for a long time and who have played a lot for Ron Washington. Basing what you do about Cruz, Murphy, Byrd, Boggs and Catalanotto in relation to each other based on ST results would be a huge mistake, imo.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 14, 2009 9:47 PM CST up reply actions

Fair enough...

I do believe though that a strong ST performance by Boggs and Jones makes this a very competitive OF situation. I also believe that Murphy needs to show he is healthy and it would really help his cause to not look like poo against LH pitching. Although I do agree that a ST performance by those guys (except Jones) should not decide what the Rangers start the season with.

My fear is that Cruz comes out and has a bad ST, Jones looks good, and that bumps Cruz.

Cruz

Im sorry but based on Cruz’s history of having a good month or so at the end of a year and then starting the next like shit probably means a bad spring training equals a DFA

by bigsteve on Feb 14, 2009 10:25 PM CST up reply actions

See...

and I disagree with that. I think that Cruz should be given the first 2 months of the season to show if he belongs or not, even if he doesn’t have a good spring.

If he gets DFA’d after a bad ST I would be very upset.

I don't get this cruz talk.

He hasn’t showed he belongs in the majors, he’s had chances. He can play in the minors but the majors? I don’t think so.

No Dshep I don’t care about his last 100 at-bats.

We need to get off to a good start this year, that means play our best players and he’s not one of them.

Cruz

Let me be clear I am all for making sure we don’t let him go without knowing whether or not hes a major leaguer or not. And I believe if Andruw Jones makes this team he will either take Cats spot (cutting Cat and keeping Jones would basically mean you are paying Jones 4.5 mil for one year which if he makes the team I would say thats a decent price for him), or Byrd is traded.

However if it comes down to decision day and the last roster spot they are deciding is that 4th/5th OF spot and its down to Cruz and Jones and Cruz has had a bad spring I think Cruz gets DFAd. I think the FO has had enough of the tease and wants results in a more prolonged time not a hot month in September facing alot of AAA guys in the majors. I think Cruz has a very short leash and even though this is another building year and not necessarily going for contention the Rangers are not going to hang on to a guy they have seen numerous times fail at the major league level.

I don’t see how you trade anyone but Byrd if Andruw makes it.

Byrd and Hamilton are the only known quantities in the outfield. Who are worth something in trade.

Here’s hoping Andruw makes it. A healthy Andruw Jones beats the snot outta most ML outfielders.
