BP Interview with Scott Servais

BP has an interview up with Scott Servais, Ranger Director of Player Development.

So really good stuff on what his job entails, and some specifics about some Rangers prospects, such as Elvis Andrus, Michael Main, and Martin Perez, among others.

Check it out...

I was a little surprised

How he dogged on Smoak’s defense. I was under the impression that he was a real plus-defender.

I didn't really thing he was dogging on Smoak's D all that much

I thought Servais was speaking more to the fact that Davis is more comfortable playing first at a big league level right now, because he’s done it. Smoak, on the other hand, has limited professional action at first and is still trying to transition over from a metal bat-fueled college game. I imagine the techniques are quite different and there is a bit of a learning curve/comfort level to overcome.

I take it more as a commentary on Smoak’s lack of professional experience, rather than as a knock on his defensive abilities. The scouts and reports I read around the draft where unanimous in believing that he has plus abilities and is potentially a GGer.

"were unanimous"

not “where unanimous”

I liked the question about Nolan Ryan

Servais made it sound like Ryan’s influence on workload and pitch counts would not be as high as I had feared.

The workout regimen and the long toss is fine but I don’t want Feliz and Holland throwing over 120 pitches regularly.

Yep

It really sounds like Nolan has just been making what the Rangers have done more public rather than him trying to push these guys even further.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Ya know...

I love how everything I read about the pitching philosophy now is that they are going to push the guys harder and if you can’t make it you will be left behind. However if Ryan pushes Feliz and Holland hard, and has them throwing more pitches every outing and one of or both of them end up getting hurt then Ryan could turn from Rangers hero to Rangers villian real quick imo. At least among the knowlegable Rangers fans. There is so much riding on these two kids that if Ryan were to run them into the ground he could suffer quite the wrath.
