T.R. Sullivan with some questions

T.R. Sullivan runs down a list of questions, with the early answers...

Of particular interest is that he thinks Doug Mathis could end up playing a big role on this team, and that Brendan Donnelly and Derrick Turnbow will both make the team out of camp, allowing the Rangers to get a closer look at them while giving Warner Madrigal additional team in AAA...

Yep

I think that start might have been the luckiest start by any Rangers pitcher last year. One of the few games in which we played competent defense behind someone.

Might be time for you to find another team to cheer for…maybe the White Sox or Padres?

is any of that good news? you know the team is gonna suck when mathis is playing a big role and the other 2 are on the team. and one of the only good pitchers we have is in AAA.

whats is there to be optimistic about with the Rangers this year?

we have won one playoff game, we’ve traded away every good pitcher, we haven’t added any good pitchers even though we were last in pitching last year, we still dont draft pitchers because we OBVIOUSLY need more hitting, and we are giving guys like Mathis and Donnely shots in the bigs.

yes, we don't need to continue building around hitting, at all, period.

every year we don’t make the playoffs because of our pitching. if we would have had average pitching for the last 10 years then we would have made the playoffs AT LEAST 4 times. the hitting is NEVER the problem. and we especially dont need to draft a first basemen when we already have chris davis and we know JD can’t trade worth shit.

if you knew for sure that in 2010 and 2011 the Rangers were gonna be in the bottom 5 for pitching would you still get a hitter in the first round?

by Stevoo on Feb 17, 2009 3:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes it is

Even if one of the Donnelly/Turnbow start to pitch like they did just a few years ago it will help ou the pen as will Mathis if he is healthy. Mathis was a starter all through the minors and could help out in long relief. I think Mad Dog could use some time in AAA and be the first to get the call if there is an injury in the pen.

Its a lot different with Cruz

Cruz has never had success in the majors over an extended period of time. But yet we are giving him another chance just to make sure all that minors success isn’t a fluke. Donnelly and Turnbow have both had success in the majors over extended periods of time. I would be much more willing to give them a shot to see if they have it again rather than on a guy who has never had it.

That's about all in his career that has been pretty damn nice

He wasn’t quite as bad as the ERA suggests in ‘06, and halfway decent in ’07, but 2005 was the only time in his entire career he’s been above average.

by bigsteve on Feb 15, 2009 4:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

To me, that's not the point

Now is what counts, and last we saw, Cruz was showing marked improvement in his plate habits last year and finishing the year with a hot hand in the majors (after being arguably the best player in the entire MiLB). Derrick Turnbow on the other hand was busy trying to stave off arm surgery and wondering is he still had a career left after last year.

Point is, what a guy did 4 years ago may not really be indicative of what type of player said guy is now – and in Turnbow’s case, considering his 2005 season was the exception to the rest his career highly doubt it is now. Cruz on the other hand has shown progress recently, and that’s what sets him apart from guys like Turnbow.

Yeah. Spies. They're little guys with beady eyes and long fingernails. They plant bugs that can pick up the hush of a man's heartbeat - or the whisper of a falling hair.

by lonestarJon on Feb 15, 2009 4:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with everything you said

And I want to keep Cruz. However originally this conversation was started because of the thought process of keeping a guy to make sure what they’ve got rather than release him and see him go somewhere else and succeed. If we are going to do it with Cruz I think we should also be open to doing it with Turnbow and Donnelly. Especially considering those two have actually had success in the majors over a full season even if it was four years ago. Nelson Cruz has never had success in the majors outside the month of September when the competition is usually not as high of caliber as it is in April, May and June due to expanded rosters and such.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Feb 15, 2009 4:38 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Gotcha

I would agree with that to some extent, assuming Donnelly and Turnbow show something in spring training. I’d also group Nippert in with them.

Unfortunately what we can’t really afford to do though, is give them as much of a chance as someone like Cruz will get – if they fail to perform, there’s no reason to put them on, or keep them on the roster.

Yeah. Spies. They're little guys with beady eyes and long fingernails. They plant bugs that can pick up the hush of a man's heartbeat - or the whisper of a falling hair.

by lonestarJon on Feb 15, 2009 4:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't see why Cruz gets a longer leash

I think if he starts off slow he is gone. None of this wait till June or the ASB or whatever I think if he gets out to a .220/.260/.350 start thru April hes gone. The Rangers have seen it happen before and I don’t think no matter how much of a building year this is they are going to sit around and wait for the light to come on. Its either on fom the get go or we may have to watch him play elsewhere.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Feb 15, 2009 4:56 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I think he'll get till mid-May, at least

And I would probably give him through May myself (I think the reward is enough to justify a long final look), but if he starts slow it’s going to be extremely hard for him to recover.

What I’m more worried about though is him starting well and gradually falling back into his old habits (kind of like Pedro Astacio or Robinson Tejeda) while being kept on the roster for half the season myself.

Yeah. Spies. They're little guys with beady eyes and long fingernails. They plant bugs that can pick up the hush of a man's heartbeat - or the whisper of a falling hair.

I just wouldn’t call one season success over an “extended period of time”.

by slc ranger on Feb 15, 2009 4:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe I should have said over a full season

Nelson Cruz has never had a good full season in the majors. Turnbow has. I would be more willing to keep Turnbow to see if he “has it” again rather than Cruz considering Turnbow has at least “had it” before.

by bigsteve on Feb 15, 2009 4:15 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Fair enough...

Although I would disagree.

I would much rather keep Cruz and give him the shot because I think his ceiling is much higher and if he does do well this year he’s still under the Rangers control for a few more seasons. I know you’re not a big believer in Cruz, but his upside right now is higher than Turnbow imo.

by slc ranger on Feb 15, 2009 4:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Im not a believer in Cruz you are right

Although I do want to see him succeed. I just am holding back optimism based on his history. He has always been good at the end of the year in September basically when rosters are expanded and he is facing more guys like he faced during the regular season in AAA where he thrived. Nothing would make me happier than to see him take off and be a power RH bat in the lineup for years to come. I just don’t think its going to happen.

quotes from Didier and BMac and our resident guru

the savvy senior scout:

“I regard McCarthy as one of the top five young pitchers under 24 years old in our game,” Didier said. “I believe he’ll be a starter who can maybe work himself up to a No. 1 or No. 2.”

“I won’t say I was mesmerized, but I said then, `God, this guy’s got something going for him that’s going to be special.’ He threw a lot of balls right on the knees and threw quality strikes,” Didier recalled. "I just feel like he’s that kind of guy, that he could be something special.

BMac:

“I definitely envision myself as a future ace,”

zywica:

I really think that this is also a big signal on what kind of confidence we can have in our scouts.

If they’re right about McCarthy I’ll feel a whole lot more comfortable in trusting them on scouting calls like this one (although who knows how much longer Didier himself will be around, I guess). This deal is really significant in that regard to me.

If Bmac

Can stay healthy I think he can be a very good starter. I’ve always said this if he grew up in our farm system and posted numbers like he did in the Pale Ho’s system we would be thinking he was the savior.

We judge this trade because Danks hasn’t been hurt and learned a cutter that made him a better pitcher. Would he have learned that same pitch here? Who knows. All I know is that I was very excited by this trade when it happened so I’m willing to see what happens when Bmac is healthy.

Short interview with JD:

"It doesn't look like he's trying. It kinda pisses me off," "He could throw 110 if he tried. The way it explodes out of his hand is really something special." ~ B-Mac on Feliz.

Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year

From the "No sh!t, Sherlock" dept. --
Finally, the Rangers’ decision to push Michael Young to third and hand the shortstop job to rookie Elvis Andrus tells me they just couldn’t deal with Young’s declining range any longer. One way to get better pitching is to have better defense, especially up the middle. They expect Andrus to provide that.
   — Jim Reeves

Glad you’re finally on board, Reevo.

The moves being made are too extra for my taste.

Guess Reeves figured out the ship has kind of sailed on defending MY?

Yeah. Spies. They're little guys with beady eyes and long fingernails. They plant bugs that can pick up the hush of a man's heartbeat - or the whisper of a falling hair.

You got to consider the audience

His readers just figured out Elvis Andrus isn’t a cover corner prospect on the Cowboy’s practice squad.
