OT: Mavs Trade Talk

Trade Deadline a few days from now, there hasn't been much discussion about it on here lately...so lets get to it.

Personally, I'd like to trade Jerry Stackhouse for Mike Miller.  Not sure if that move is big enough to make the Mavs a contender (could be like Korver in Utah last year) but I think it makes the team better.  Stackhouse's contract expires so it makes sense for Minnesota, and Miller's contract expires before 2010 season so we will still have plenty of room to try to sign Bosh or Wade.  John Salmons is also another option but I'd prefer Miller.  If you make this move you could then consider dealing Howard for another piece that would make sense.

Sure it would be interesting to bring Shaq in here but I don't think that's realistic because if we trade for him, Cuban would have to pay $40 million for him next year (because of the luxury tax).

It's possible there might be another Pau Gasol-type trade this year, especially because of the economy.  If so, I'm sure Cuban would capitalize on it.

What do you think the Mavs should do?

I seriously doubt Minnesota will trade Miller for Stackhouse

Stackhouse’s contract does not expire, he has about 2 million guaranteed next year. I’d rather have Miller’s 10 million expiring as ammo next year, then trade him for nothing this year.

Unquestionably.

From almost any metric, Bass was better than Wright last year—Bass’ lack of size was compensated for by his better overall game.

Even from an emotional level, he’s more valuable.

Me and Chad Ford are on the same page

Trades that must happen,

1. Raptors send Chris Bosh to the Warriors for Andris Biedrins, Anthony Randolph, Ronny Turiaf, Marco Belinelli and a future No. 1 pick

Heck of a deal for the Raptors.

This one pisses me off..

4. New Orleans Hornets send Tyson Chandler to Oklahoma City for Joe Smith, Chris Wilcox and Mouhamed Sene and the first-round pick the San Antonio Spurs owe the Thunder.

Chris Paul will not be a happy camper.

I'm sure you have some kind of special man-love for Julian Wright

but it’s HORRIBLE coming back here. Tyson Chandler’s not a BAD player, but he’s not special. West and Paul are the motors on that team. If we don’t get a motor in return for giving up one ourselves plus a very good 2nd piece, I’m out.

Yes

He’s much more valuable than Barbosa.

by brettgardner on Feb 17, 2009 9:34 AM CST up reply actions

assuming Cuban

wanted to spent the $$, do you think PHX would do a Damp and Stack for Shaq?

If PHX want a little more would you be willing to add Bass?

I’m just trying to figure out how to add Shaq and still get a starting 2 guard. This team badly needs a starting 2 with 0 points coming from Kidd. You can’t have a starting backcourt averaging what, 12 pts/gm…

"If you have a problem with me, you're probably a doucher."

by red shoe ranger on Feb 17, 2009 9:40 AM CST up reply actions

Well

Barbosa doesn’t qualify as a starter. Too many holes in his game.

The only way to get a starter is to get Richardson.

by brettgardner on Feb 17, 2009 9:44 AM CST up reply actions

surely he

starts over Wright. You might be underrating Barbosa a bit. I think he fits in with this team better than Howard. His PER is better than J Ho and he shoots for a higher %. Now I do think it would be a hit defensively…

"If you have a problem with me, you're probably a doucher."

by red shoe ranger on Feb 17, 2009 9:48 AM CST up reply actions

Exactly

As long as Terry is getting starter minutes, you don’t need a Barbosa who has a similar game.

You need a guy like Wright (though preferably a little better) who can guard the first line 2s and give you a little something sandwiched between Terry’s minutes.

by brettgardner on Feb 17, 2009 9:50 AM CST up reply actions

we r talking

about SHAQ!!!! If you can get me Shaq w/o J Ho I’m in. But if they want a little more than just salary dumps I give them Howard but then ask for Barbosa to lessen the sting.

Now if they want Bass instead I guess I could be talked into that, although I want the Mavs to figure out a way to keep him going forward.

"If you have a problem with me, you're probably a doucher."

by red shoe ranger on Feb 17, 2009 9:55 AM CST up reply actions

Yes!

But I don’t think the Suns would. The reason they would unload Shaq is to lose salary, so I’m not sure how they would react to taking Dampier.

That would be a nice trade for the Mavs, assuming they would take on the salary. I think they might have to throw in Bass too though, which seeing as he’s a FA at the end of the year, wouldn’t hurt quite as much.

Kidd-Barbosa-Wright-Dirk-Shaq with Terry-Bass off the bench is very nice. I know Barbosa isn’t amazing and has obvious flaw to his game, but I think that playing with Kidd (and Dirk) on offense and with Shaq on defense, he can be a valuable player. Minutes wise, I figure he’d be more of a backup to Kidd and Terry as the No. 3 guard.

by GhettoBear04 on Feb 17, 2009 8:33 PM CST up reply actions

To me

Chandler is a very nice player, but essentially, he’s a more athletic Dampier. He’s benefiting greatly from Paul.

The rest of the pieces coming back are all fine in their own right, but the contracts make it too hard to swallow.

We upgrade center

and get our center for the next 8 years. We upgrade their SF. C is more important than SF, so we take back a bad contract in Morris.. but then we feel like were not getting enough, so we must get Wright, also.. and we throw in Bass for good measure.

"Hang-Dai, Wu...Hang-Fu$&ing-Dai"

by Walter Sobchak on Feb 17, 2009 9:12 AM CST up reply actions

That's fair value

But Lowry is a pretty good defensive point with decent hands and a nice assist/bad pass ratio, but he’s not much for scoring and he’s small.

That equals a very nice backup point and a serviceable backup big. Is that worth the chips we’re giving? I’d rather get one good player than two average ones.

by brettgardner on Feb 17, 2009 9:24 AM CST up reply actions

need

to find someone who wants to re-up Bass and is willing to buy high now in the hopes that it gives them the inside track to resign him.

I personally want to use him as a sweetener in a Shaq deal.

by red shoe ranger on Feb 17, 2009 9:28 AM CST up reply actions

I think I have man-love for Lowry.

to me, he’s Randy Foye-lite, and I like that idea. I think Lowry can score more…and would, given the chance. But then again, his shooting percentages have been all over the charts: great 3 pt % with less shots his rookie year, then not so impressive the next two; fantastic FT % first year, horrible 2nd year, then back up above average this year; horrible FG% first year, then improved drastically with more shots 2nd year, now back down to a poor level. I see potential for 35 minutes a night averaging 14 ppg/4.5 rpg/6.0 apg with good FT% and decent FG and 3Pt %. But the biggest thing, he’s young, he’s athletic, and he can get to the rack and set others up well

I'd take Salmons over Miller

Miller was at his best coming off the bench. Salmons can play the point, and is more of a slasher which would fit better with all of the jump shooters we have. I doubt any trades of significance happen between now and the deadline though.

However much I may want a trade to happen the NBA deadline has been disappointing pretty much every year since two or three CBA’s ago when they added salary swap rules. They need to revisit the whole system because teams have no roster mobility and are pretty much stuck with their rosters for 4 to 6 years at a time.

Basketball is the one team sport where it really hurts to have such strict restrictions on roster movement. The rosters are only 15 players max and teams aren’t backed by a true minor league system.

Salmons might be the best bet

As a package of stackhouse and a young albeit not necessarily talented guy might at least come close to getting something done. As long as no one outbids you, a deal has a chance at getting done which is more than I can say about miller, who would be nice.

OT somewhat, I just got done finishing bill simmons trade value article before heading over here and I had no idea how bad or long matt carrolls contract is. Who in their right mind would give that guy a 5 year 18 million dollar contract (plus whatever was on there before if he didnt just sign). Conversely, and things like this are why I wouldnt call him a must read, Carroll ranks right behind Diop with the same amount of years but almost half as much in the bad contract column. Hey Bill, they arent that close.

How bout a Smoak and a pancake?

by rchawk12 on Feb 16, 2009 9:07 PM CST reply actions

Hmm?

They got almost the exact same deal—the MLE.

Carroll got about 27 and Diop about 32.

by brettgardner on Feb 16, 2009 9:10 PM CST up reply actions

But

Carroll’s first year was his highest salary and descends in value every year. Makes the contract much easier to move, which has already benefited them and will benefite us in the future.

So his contract as it stands today is MUCH better than Diop’s.

Bosh might be this year's Pau Gasol

but not so much in terms of what the “steal” would be. The only move I try to make would be to try to get Bosh from Toronto before he enters free agency. if it doesn’t work out, you’ve got him for a year and a half with Dirk, Josh (if you didn’t trade him in the deal) and Kidd. That’d be a pretty formidable group come playoff time. And you still lose his contract and Kidd’s contract by the 2010 deadline…

But what would it take to get Bosh? Would Stackhouse, Bass and Terry be enough to get Bosh and Anthony Parker? Doubtful…but that would be my “Pau Gasol” scenario for this team

Miller

If we can get him as part of a bigger package (like say along with Salmons) I have no issues with him being our backup center. He would do well in certain matchups and would not get torched by most backup centers.

But Brad Miller is absolutely not someone I would trade our two best trading chips for, on his own. He absolutely could start and play 30 minutes a game for this team because he can not defend. When you play a PF who can not guard the rim, you absolutely must have a center that can for most of your matchups in the NBA.

are you cryptically bagging

on Nellie? The guy is the architect of what is probably one of the 5 winningest teams in the NBA during his tenure. Look it up, I don’t know how….

He’s drafted two MVP’s(Nash, Dirk). How many GM’s have that on their resume? Is the answer 0? Again, look it up….

He’s been brilliant when it comes to trading “untradeable” contracts(see Juwan Howard) which netted them Van Exel whom was instrumental to those teams.

The Kidd trade is tough but Donnie should get huge kudos for flipping Jamison for Stack and Harris to begin with. And oh, how do you like the trade he pulled to get Jamison in the first place? Fleeced Golden State on that deal.

Bass signing was impressive. Josh Howard is still a great player given his draft position.

Has he missed on some drafts? No doubt. Who hasn’t?

Donnie is sorely underrated my many…

Donnie is one of the top 5 GM’s in the league, look it up!

The Kidd deal left a sour taste in my mouth

as did the Walker deal and Jamison (to an extent), but that was probably because I was still feeling the after-effects of NVE playoff magic. I suppose dealing him and his contract with his value at peak for a highly-talented player around his peak was a very good move. Outside those three, he’s made a bunch of great deals (deadline trade for Juwon Howard was a great boost to our playoff hopes at the time, same for Raef and NVE, trading Walker for Jet, trading Jamison for Devin and Stack).

His recent inactivity at the draft has frustrated me a little though, considering how he emerged with two steals in the 03 draft.

Nitpick

Donnie didn’t draft Nash

I though.....

Donnie was in Phoenix in some capacity when they drafted Nash. That’s why we traded for him because when his Dad brought him over to be GM, he was kind of crazy for the little white backup PG and got his Dad to trade a 1st round pick and Pat Garrity or something like that for him…..I might be wrong though

by CS3 on Feb 18, 2009 8:27 AM CST up reply actions

He was an assitant coach there for 3 years

but to give him total credit for drafting Nash is a stretch IMO. I could be wrong I guess…

Why would you think I was bagging Nellie? He’s not our GM. Brandon Bass is the most impressive thing Donnie has done… think about that for a second.

We've talked about this before

But Bass, Barea, Daniels, Singleton, and a handful of other guys are great bargain-bin pickups for a championship-caliber team with no cap room and in luxury hell.

Failures in the draft are damning, and we’re certainly not making any OKC type trades right now, but I think a lot of the criticism is too much.

Wiki

During his tenure, the Mavericks have won 66% of their games, including four 50-win seasons, two 60-wins seasons, and a franchise record 67-wins season in 2007. The 67-wins season was tied for the sixth-best regular season in NBA history. The Mavericks are also one of just six franchises to win 60 games or more three times in a five year span. Under Nelson, the Mavericks have also made the playoffs seven consecutive seasons, been to the Western Conference Finals twice, reached a franchise milestone in 2006 when they advanced to the NBA Finals, and won their first Division Title in 20 years in 2007.

the thing

I like about Donnie is he’s willing to swing big(drafting Dirk, bringing in Nash, trading for Kidd, trying Stack, Van Exel, Terry, Jamison, et al.)

He’s constantly trying to improve the team, very little standing pat.

Thus far we have avoided a collapse like some of our former foes/piers(Minnesota, Sacramento). Those teams still had talent but were unable to evolve and adjust on the fly.

We may be nearing the cliff but Donnie has kept us from falling off it…

by studcrackers on Feb 17, 2009 3:50 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly

He’s only there because he’s a natural 3 and Durant would be used inefficiently at 2. That doesn’t make him a 4 anymore than it makes Diaw a 4 because he’s playing there to accommodate Bell/Wallace/etc.

You can get away with him there—and I should add that Diaw is a general exception because he has the ability to play all positions to varying degrees—but that shouldn’t be the goal. Certainly he won’t embarrass you, but my guess is that Green should be traded. Somebody else suggested this a couple months ago and I’ve come around.
