No Cruz for the Rangers
According to Jim Reeves, the Rangers have no money in the budget to go after Juan Cruz:
While on the surface that might appear to help the Rangers do something to add Cruz, money is still the sticking point. One Texas insider tells me the team simply won't add any significant salary at this point and that that means Cruz is probably not going to happen here, even though he would immediately become a key piece in the Rangers' bullpen.
The joys of being a small market team continue...

Aw hell
I’ll be less upset about this kind of crap if they go ahead and just release Catalonotto.

So I guess
Ben Sheets was gonna be free. Apples and oranges, but still.

my thoughts as well
although maybe it’s not a bad thing to hold off on high priced bullpen acquisitions

Good.
I’d much rather spend that money acquiring young talent in the draft and in LA.
I like Cruz well enough, but, no.

I hate Michael Young.

Good point...
It’s hard to always think about the relationship, but it’s certainly possible that the Rangers would miss out on a couple of draft picks if they spent several million on a free agent. It’s certainly possible that the Rangers will select and sign someone commanding above-slot money in the draft that they might otherwise have had to pass on.

Deadline deal
I would sign Cruz simply to trade him for prospects at the deadline, every contender needs solid bullpen arms by July.

Why do people like this player so much?
His control is bad, has been his whole ML career, and he’s decline phase.

Depends
on the price. I’d be ok with him for about $1.5-2 a year, no more. Perhaps he’s insisting on more and the Rangers won’t budge. If so, good for them, but I’d hate to think they just won’t add anyone on something other than an NRI.

Ben Sheets, for example.
Cruz just doesn’t throw consistent strikes, I imagine that’s why they’re passing.
I remember liking him when the peripherals still seemed like a credible work in progress…

Projections
have Cruz with a FIP in the mid- to upper 3’s this year, I’d take that no matter how he gets the outs.

I guess the '07 playoffs against COL
really boosted his stock in a high-profile setting. I do like the idea of having a BP guy you can bring in for a strikeout situation. Man on 3rd, 1 out, I prefer the reward-risk of Cruz. Getting him is not that big a deal to me, but at a decent price I like.

OT. Kinsler on with BaD Radio at 2:15ish.

I'd be more worried about not expanding pay roll in '10 or '11
No one is expecting us to compete this year, and Juan Cruz isn’t the end-all of relievers. I’d be concerned if the team doesn’t set up in ‘10 and ’11 when we are expected to compete. I’m content with seeing what we have in house and letting those guys filter out in ’09.
And becides, what do you get for 1 year of Cruz? A game or two? Then he leaves for FA and maybe he’s a repate Type A, but probably drops to a Type B.

Over the years
the Rangers have had decent attendance. But, when they won three division titles in four years, they never drew 3 million fans, even in a new ball park. This area has just not a been big market. We need to drop this once and for all. It could change if the Rangers have a more winning system, but that is only speculation at this point.

Meh...
I’m not all that interested in Juan anyway.

Cruz will be here
…………just because Jim Reeves said he would not be. Mr. “everything was better in the old days” is hardly a credible source.

How much would Cruz cost
Anyway? Nobody will sign him if he costs a FA, so his value can’t be that high.
