ot, statistical formula's
so, I didn't make my school's baseball team, but the coach has heard me talk about baseball and has read my articles in the school paper and he is "impressed with my love and knowledge of the game" so he wants me to take stats and give him reports about the players using most of the basic stats in the game. he says he wants everything.
well, I'm a little shaky on most of the formula's so does anybody know where i can find on the internet how to do that stuff.
i don't need anything like vorp or win shares. but i do need stuff like OBP and ERA and stuff like that.
so any links or if any of ya'll know them off the top of your head thats also good.
i admit to my noob-ness in not knowing these things like any respectable baseball fan should but i need some help.

Win shares are not a good source of information. They undervalue pitchers.
You just don't know when to keep your mouth shut, do you Saxy boy?
way to be a jackass
and not read
i don’t need anything like vorp or win shares.
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

I was qualifying why it was a poor source of information.
You just don't know when to keep your mouth shut, do you Saxy boy?
i don't even like you

You don't?
That’s strange, that’s all you talked about for years…

You would be better off
purchasing this. http://www.scorepad.com/ It does all the work and reporting for you. I’ve used it and it is a nice piece of software for your pda.

on base percentage
obp = (hits + bb+ hbp)/ (ab bb hbp+ sf)
slg i believe is total bases / ab ie ((1b)+ (2X2b)+ (3X 3b)+(4Xhr))/ab
era = 9 * earned runs/ip
Omar Vizquel: your starting shortstop for the 2009 AL all-star team.
Like you, I really don't know where to look to find all the formulas and stuff
But just from Wikipedia:
It is determined by dividing the number of earned runs allowed by the number of innings pitched and multiplying by nine.

* H = Hits
* BB = Bases on Balls (Walks)
* HBP = times Hit By a Pitch
* AB = At bats
* SF = Sacrifice Flies
Yeah. Spies. They're little guys with beady eyes and long fingernails. They plant bugs that can pick up the hush of a man's heartbeat - or the whisper of a falling hair.
Be sure your coach understands
that with small samples that info isn’t terribly useful. It’s great that he’s seeking more info, but high school seasons are so short that you won’t have enough of a sample to mean anything until it’s mostly over.

this is a very good point. Sample size is very important.

i don't get it
he was impressed with your knowledge of stats like ERA and OBP? I mean, you might as well give him something interesting.
Heck, if you can watch every game, why don’t you figure out a good defensive metric.

use +/- lol

Read this series.
It’s free stuff. And while every word won’t be what you need, there’s a whole lot of stuff in there that should help you. An important concept is that understanding the stats is less important than understanding the IDEA behind the stats. The BPB series goes through a lot of that.
Even if you’re never going to get in to anything as “advanced” as VORP, it’s a very good series to read as a start.
