Wednesday a.m. stuff
The Rangers will have a representative at Chad Cordero's throwing session today. The Rangers have supposedly had interest in Cordero on a minor league deal.
Joaquin Arias, meanwhile, says his arm is strong enough for him to play shortstop and third base, which would be a meaningful improvement over last season, when his arm was marginal for second base.
Jeff Wilson has a story up about Andruw Jones' attempt to revive his career with Texas, including some optimistic quotes from Rudy Jaramillo.
Jim Reeves has a column up on Elvis Andrus.

i really think andruw does well this year
im not sure if thats a fair thign to do/say but i can hope…
anyway, id rather have him in CF than byrd (between the knee and the fact that hes more than capable as a 4th OF AND it pushes murphy to a 5th OF (which is a pretty damn solid group if cruz doesnt suck it up + andruw plays moderately well
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

AJM
don’t want to rehash the Andruw Jones thing but just want to get something clear:
Is there anything Andruw Jones can do this year that would make this a good deal in your mind or is it one of those things where even if lucks in to doing well, he still wouldn’t have been worth the risk?
I won’t argue if it’s the latter (or at all), just want to know.
"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."
by ab03 on Feb 18, 2009 8:04 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
why would any Rangers fan
have a problem with him “lucking” into doing well? I can’t speak for Adam, but there are a lot of things he can do, luck-based or even, perhaps, skill based, that would make a minor league deal a good one. Knowing the injury concerns about Byrd and Murphy already make it a good deal, and if he gets back to anything resembling his old ways (stellar defense, middle of the order power) then it is actually an incredible value. What is the most he can make this year hitting all his incentives? Like 2 mil?

you could still not liek the deal on principle
"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."
by ab03 on Feb 18, 2009 12:13 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
please explain...
which principle is that?
by clark on Feb 18, 2009 12:33 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
the cost of bringing him in
which is developmental time to some other OFer, or losing Byrd. So even if he happens to be a great all star, you might think it just wasn’t worth it given that it could have backfired and in general you don’t want the club to be bringing in these potentially good veterans when you have ML depth.
that would be the argument- i don’t agree.
"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."
by ab03 on Feb 18, 2009 2:55 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
so what principle could anyone not like it on
when byrd probably starts the yr on the DL, boggs is banged up and we have who knows what in cruz?

about the injuries long before we did. Neither Bogg’s or Byrd’s procedures were publicized. And i really doubt both are healthy by April.

I don't dislike the deal based on this
Right now, I like the deal. Its impossible to really feel any other way on an NRI. The problem I have is what could happen if Jones makes the team without there being some serious injuries to Murphy, Boggs, and Byrd where they have to start the season on the DL.

Wednesday spring update, a.m. edition:
<>Outfielder Brandon Boggs said he isn’t sure if he will be a full participant tomorrow during the first full-squad workout. The shoulder injury that he suffered in August hasn’t fully healed, and he is still experiencing pain when he throws.
<>Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia joined pitcher Kason Gabbard as a young player who surrendered his jersey number to a new veteran. Saltalamacchia will be wearing No. 21 so that Andruw Jones can wear his usual No. 25. Gabbard gave No. 13 to Omar Vizquel and will be No. 30 this season.
<>Assistant general manager Thad Levine hopes to have all pre-arbitration players signed to contracts before the start of games Feb. 25. Once that is accomplished, signing center fielder Josh Hamilton could to an extension could become more of a priority.
<>Still no sign of Omar Vizquel or Jose Vallejo as of 9 a.m. Position players must report today. Vallejo might not make it because of a visa issue with his wife. Vizquel, a 20-year veteran, lives in the Seattle area.

Young has hit .285 in his career with the bases empty and .336 with runners in scoring position.
The difference of 51 points is the most of any player . . . ever . . . in the history of the majors!

Kinsler @ 3rd is interesting
The lineup does not have too many lefties, but the problem is that the power bats are mainly lefties. That makes it difficult to break up Hamilton, Davis, and Blalock. If Hamilton bats 3rd (like he probably should since he’s the best bat in the lineup), then we don’t have a classic righty masher to hit cleanup. I’m not sure Cruz, although he may be the best option right now (unless AJones makes a miraculous career turnaround) is a great option there.
I’m not sold on Young hitting leadoff. I think he’s either in the 2-hole or should be dropped to the bottom third of the lineup (but I don’t think that will ever happen). I think Byrd or Murphy could do ok hitting 2nd, and Kinsler could do very well hitting third. The problem there is that Kinsler is, in my mind, far and away our best option at leadoff. And it will be interesting how soon Davis forces his way to the middle of the lineup.
The way the lineup is constructed this year could be interesting…

You may be right
Young 2nd is just really a concession, I guess. I don’t like him at leadoff, and I don’t think they’d show further “disrespect” by dropping him down in the lineup. I actually like Kinsler hitting 2nd, especially when/if Borbon could take the first spot.

Not meno but
I think given the fact that he is supposedly actually in better shape makes it a worthwhile flyer. The only downside that I still see is Washington and Jaramillo getting wrapped up in it and not giving in if it clearly isn’t working, but I mean if for some reason all of those guys can’t get on the field at some point early in the season, and you’re looking at an OF with Hamilton, Cruz and __ (Catalanotto?), it’s all the more worth it to have a warm body with a little upside, rather than being tempted to rush Borbon on something like May 1.

Wednesday spring update, p.m. edition:
Joaquin Arias has done infield work at shortstop with Ron Washington the past two days but hasn’t thrown across the diamond yet. Washington said the short throws Arias has made look stronger than last season.
<>Outfielder Marlon Byrd sprinted this morning for the first time in three weeks. He felt soreness after the last time, so he decided to take it easy until he was around the Rangers’ training staff. His latest MRI showed no problems in the left knee, and he plans to spring every other day for now.
<>Position players had two rounds of batting practice. The first was the normal straight stuff, thrown by a few different coaches. The later round, though, was all curveballs from a pitching machine.

and he plans tospringsprint every other day for now.
Right?
I hope he doesn’t give it too much, too early as per kok’s fanpost.

Anyone remember Wilson Suero?
He was the phenom SS from the DR who had his 560K contract voided after he lied about his age. Well, in 06, the Rangers almost got taken by another one. As good as our scouting dept is in Latin America, it would seem that a solid clerical work or archivist might go a long way (from mlbtr):
Esmailyn Gonzalez Falsified Identity
By Tim Dierkes [February 18 at 4:52pm CST]
4:52pm: Stan Kasten talked about the situation, calling it an “elaborated, premeditated scheme no teenager concocted.”
10:43am: Chico Harlan of the Washington Post has a few quotes from Rijo. He says the Nationals will have a conference call about the topic this afternoon.
8:32am: According to Melissa Segura of SI.com, Nationals shortstop prospect and 2006 signee Esmailyn Gonzalez falsified his identity and age. He’s actually named Carlos Alvarez Daniel Lugo, and he’s 23 rather than 19. The Nats had signed him for $1.4MM; the next highest bidder was the Rangers at $700K.
Lugo’s buscon, who brokered the deal for him, is a childhood friend of Nats exec Jose Rijo. Rijo and Nats GM Jim Bowden were under investigation last year in regard to the bonus skimming scandal.

I love the team, knockoutking.
Followed them for 30 something years.
I just don’t buy the sunshine pumping bullshit blatantly espoused by the Usual Suspects or by Ranger management. I was stoked like you could not believe before and during 2004 because I saw the window of opportunity opening wide and took Hicks for his word when he said that ARod was traded so the team could have financial flexibility.
What happened after 2004 was an opportunity lost and maybe we’ll get back there one day but baseball gods tend to take a dim view of those organizations too stupid or greedy for their own good. I’m still a big fan of the players.
I’ve stressed long and hard not to deal Salty (at least until he gets his value higher) and I’ve thought that Teagarden was one of the great plumbs in a thick system. Behind those two, we have Max? Wow.
CDavis is one of the bright stars in MLB and I think he could be our own Ryan Howard.
I fell for Kinsler hard when I saw him in Spring Training 2005 and always thought he would be an eventual star. I wasn’t shocked by how he continued to improve his game last year.
I have a major man-crush on Michael Young. Publicly treating JD like dogshit on his shoes cemented his legacy with me.
How can you not like Josh?
Have you ever heard anybody else bitch about Brandon Boggs (The Thinking Man’s Player) not getting enough of a shot last year?
I’m a sucker for the game and the team. I’ve come this far and I’m not giving up on them but I’m also not going to sit here like a potted plant when I see JD continuing to feed bullshit to the masses.
How’s that for an answer?

Apparently Boggs was hurt at the end of last year
Does that change your opinion at all on how this team screwed up by not playing him more in the Show and instead playing old players who aren’t going to help this team in the future?

Yes, it does as it pertains to Boggs
I didn’t know the severity of the injury to Boggs but they’re not going to receive a Get of Jail free card from me.
Why the hell did they give that much playing time to Gerald Bleeping Laird in August & September when the team was out of post-season contention and there were better, younger options with more upside on the bench?
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

Well Salty was hurt
and the team was looking to trade Laird after the season. Teagarden got 11 starts/14 total games played in September.

tball, let's talk about facts.
Salty’s last game was August 31 but he hurt himself on August 29.
I believe Teagarden came up September 1.
So that means from August 1-29 and from Sept.1-30, younger catchers with more upside were available.
Love the effort, though.

You won't hear me
saying this team handled the catching situation right for most of last year, but other than giving Ramirez some of Teagarden’s starts, I can’t argue with what they were doing in September once Salty was out.

I think it was the correct move
to play the catcher that you are expecting to deal that offseason while also giving at least one of your young catchers a nice amount of playing time isn’t a bad move at all and it worked out pretty well. The Rangers got Moscoso and Melo and they sacrificed a small handful of September starts for Ramirez and Teagarden who probably could have used the rest.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Laird was out injured
and hardly played at all in July. In August and September he came back and established his health and solidified whatever trade value he was going to have. Salty still caught 13 games in August before being injured. As stated above Teagarden got quite a nice look after returning from China. Max does not even belong in the discussion, he needs more defensive work.
Sitting Laird too much would have been stupid since they wanted to trade him in the winter. I completely agree the team handled the catching situation poorly early in 2008, but I can’t really fault how they handled in August and September.
