McCarthy and Wilson impressing in Surprise
According to Washington, CJ Wilson and Brandon McCarthy have been the most impressive pitchers in camp thus far. I think Jeff Wilson is right; these two are the most important pitchers for the Rangers in 2009. I know Adam also pointed this out in the most recent podcast: McCarthy is probably the Rangers best shot to develop a top of the rotation starter, at least until Holland and Feliz reach the majors. Here is to hoping he can stay healthy and remain impressive.

I remember...
when BMac first started posting here as “Black Glove Righty” and some LSBers got upset (I may have been one of them) because they thought he was some troll mocking BGL. Then BMac let everyone know that Ceej would know who he was, and sure enough he did know it was BMac. Of course that was pretty short lived because the BGL stuff happened shortly after that.
I always thought it was cool that a player or two would actually grace LSB with their presence.

Don’t most of the Lone Star Ball posters feels that Nolan doesn’t know shit about baseball either because he was only a pitcher? Hall of Fame pitcher, but only a pitcher. Not sure how long Ryan has been in baseball but it has to be as long or nearly as long as Warsh.

The only complaints I have read have to do with the fear that he would expect pitchers to handle the same workload he undertook when he was pitching.

People here were skeptical
that being a former player, HOFer or not, automatically translated into running a baseball organization. Luckily, he has been an asset both in public relations (expected by all) and running the org (what we were worried about). He bought into the long term plan and is a good buffer between Hicks and the team.

JSJ,
You have many good points to make on lonestarball, but I think it’s unfortunate that you’ve become to Wash what Josey is to JD. I think you’re better than that. Also, if the Rangers stumble out of the gate and fire Wash, it’s almost a certainty that Jackie Moore will become the new manager – he’s not exactly great manager material.
Also, many of the complaints you make are JD’s responsibility, not Wash’s. For example, somewhere in this thread you single out Wash for stunting Salty’s development by not giving him regular playing time. Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to be upset with JD for not leaving Salty in AAA for longer or for not moving Laird earlier?
More – I would take anything any MLB manager says this time of year with more than a grain of salt. All of them are talking up there players, setting up some positive vibes. It’s basicly meaningless chatter for us.

Those are good points
I probably did get a bit over the top this afternoon (guess I felt like ranting). I don’t mean to sound like Josey when it comes to ranting about Wash (I will admit, for example, that as a coach and a people motivator, I’ll admit there is a certain measure of value) but I just think Ron Washington is far below par when it comes to the actual “managing” part of his job.
Your point about JD holding out trying max out Laird’s value for so long is a valid one (though it did get us Moscoso, who could turn out to be important). But in the end, I don’t think that completely excuses Wash from playing him all the time over Salty, either – while the org shouldn’t have brought Salty up if they weren’t going to play him, the manager’s unwillingness to play an important young player like that still has to leave you questioning if he’s the right person to be managing a young team.

Salty
What was Wash supposed to do? Laird is a good catcher, another MLB team traded two prospects to have him as their everyday catcher. They had to split time somehow. I believe that Millwood wanted Laird to start his games – Salty only caught Millwood while Laird was on the DL. I would also bet that JD didn’t anticipate Bradley would play in the field so infrequently tying up the DH spot.

Which doesn’t sound like much, but that probably would be a pretty big difference for us, currently.
Mainly my problem is I don’t like having a ding-dong managing (or mis-managing, rather) a team that’s in the midst of rebuilding and has a lot of young guys in transition on it. Who knows what kind of damage Ron has done to Salty’s development by shorting him playing time, or what keeping Chris Davis at the bottom of the order for to long could do to both him and run production.

NOT playing him, or playing him at first base in ‘07 is what has hurt him (and us, since he’s still a question mark in the catcher situation).

But shorting him the playing time he needed to improve is on Washington. And for what? So we could enjoy few weeks of fluky hot hitting by Gerald Laird? Sounded good at the time, but it sure wasn’t good for a team from the developmental standpoint.

I think so
You need to play to improve things like throwing mechanics and blocking, too.

With Salty being so young and
playing a lot of games last year at 1B, I do think lack of playing time hurt his defense too.

I don't get it.
I think the pitching coach was chastised and let go, and we should give Ron a fresh start with some healthy arms to see how he’d really handle a normal situation before blaming the last decade of pitching problems on the guy

For many...
Wash has used up all his chances.
I don’t always agree with some of the in games decisions he has made, but he gets way too much blame for this thing the last 2 years imo.
I’ve said it before, but tell me one manager that makes this team better the last two years given the bad pitching and injuries they have had. That stuff really isn’t Wash’s fault.

even some of his bullpen mismanagement
he might have ran benoit’s arm into the ground…
But Jamey Wright? There was a lot of complaining about not giving others a look and while that’s true, we also saved wear and tear on young arms and instead ruined some other guy’s career that matters nothing to us down the line.

I like his answer about the Ballpark
The Ballpark isn’t that huge of a hitter’s park like most believe it is and it definitely is not the reason why our pitching has been bad.

As far as being most important
I think that Francisco is probably more important than Wilson, because he is more physically gifted and therefore more likely to dominate in a late role. Wilson being healthy to go along with Francisco would be really nice, though.
Also, I have it in the back of my head that Holland has the potential to be one of those guys who is gifted enough that he has success from the get-go. If that’s even within the range of possibility, I think he’d be up there with McCarthy.
by Brett Perryman on Feb 19, 2009 6:14 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
But Frankie will be there, he will be fine
What’s important is Wilson locking down the 8th, benefiting the rest of the bullpen.

You don't have to look any farther than C.J. Wilson to know that it only takes one offseason for a Rangers closer to come off his hinges.

Well, to be fair to Rangers closers
It could be said that CJ is/was an 8th inning LOOGY who got handed the job thanks to one of those “one year wonder” seasons in 2007.
Thing is Fx2 could turn out be the same damned thing, which was Z’s point.

I feel that way about Holland as well
I think Feliz is the guy that’ll take 2 years to start dominating, but Holland has the stuff (Main as well when he makes it) to be somewhat successful from the beginning. I hope we’re right about that

Feliz
I’d guess that Feliz could be dominant right away in a relief role. If the team stays in the hunt, I’d guess Feliz is pitching in a bullpen ace type role by the ASB.
Doctor please. Some more of these.

Agreed
Maybe not by the ASB, but if were in the hunt, with the rotation set, come August.. I can definitely see him helping, one way or another.

how many innings
what do you think the org’s target is for his innings?
Doctor please. Some more of these.
by tricer on Feb 19, 2009 7:13 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
First
I don’t know, but I think that whatever it is, the plan involves starting that many innings. Second, I know that the Yankees had the plan to manage Joba’s innings and all, but I don’t really know that it’s fair to say that it’s a great way to manage them, because those innings can still stress a guy’s arm. Just look at all of the relievers who throw 70 innings in a season and get hurt.
by Brett Perryman on Feb 19, 2009 7:52 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I guess my train of thought
was that “if they were in the hunt” and needed a shutdown reliever, and they had an in-house option in Feliz, then the temptation might be too much, especially compared to trying to trade for the bullpen piece.
I don’t know if using him every three to four days for a couple of innings per outing would be good for his development or not, I guess that is a case by case thing.
Doctor please. Some more of these.
by tricer on Feb 19, 2009 8:09 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Feliz threw a little over 130 innings last year
including the playoffs (not sure on the exact number). I can’t imagine the team worrying about limiting his innings until the end of July, early August. He probably could pitch a full season between Frisco and Oklahoma and be fine.

At some point last season
I wondered if his future wasn’t in the pen. But there was a consistent message from the organization if you took their comments to others in the media that they view him as a starter, period. And they really haven’t been fond of giving guys who are starters all the way stretches in the pen to manage innings, etc.
by Brett Perryman on Feb 19, 2009 7:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Holland
I’ve had the same thought. I think as soon as he gets on a run of 4-5 good to dominant starts in AAA, he will be starting in Arlington, and that could happen as soon as May. Like you say, he could possibly be one of those guys that can step right into being a #2 ML starter without missing a beat.
It’s fun to have some near ready pitching prospects that have real upside, I can see why nobody else will trade us one of these types for a catcher.
Doctor please. Some more of these.

Not to sound jaded
but that means almost nothing to me coming from Washington. I’m glad that he claims to like what he’s seeing, but for one thing Washington tries pretty hard to be positive, and for another I’m not sure that he has much of an eye for just how advanced Andrus is at the plate, particularly given that he’s only seen him (possibly) in AFL/winter ball and some camp BP.
