Rosenthal: Mets close to a deal on Perez
Ken Rosenthal says the Mets are supposedly close to getting a deal done with Oliver Perez.
Although Rosenthal says that Randy Wolf is the Mets' primary backup plan to Perez (and that Perez going to New York would mean Wolf signing with the Dodgers), there's also the thought out there that Ben Sheets probably won't sign until Perez signs, since the Mets were the other team that showed a fair amount of interested in Sheets.

The only two other options for Sheets besides Texas it seems now
are the Dodgers or the Brewers.
The Dodgers are looking like they are going to land Wolf, the Brewers want an incentive laden deal and supposedly Sheets isn’t to happy about how the team has treated him the off season. Looper looks like he stands a real good chane to go to the Orioles.
Sheets, you are running out of options.
I still say it is a 75/25 chance of getting a deal done, with only really the Astros as a possible dark horse. Outside of the 3 NL teams I have mentioned, I have hard time thinking of a possible landing spot for him.
by laxtonto on Feb 2, 2009 12:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
It’s kinda sad that a pitcher has to run completely out of options before they sign with the Rangers. I’m a life long Rangers fan, but that’s embarrassing. It feels like things are changing for the better though. sips the kool aid slowly

Phillies
Weren’t they rumored to have interest in Sheets?
Also, Sheets seems like the type that the Cardinals have pursued in the past. I wouldn’t rule them out.

there is lots of talk in Baltimore about signing him
As time goes on, the options will increase for Sheets, as teams wake up out of their doldrums.

Poor Sheets
I really want him, but it sucks for him that his arm appears to be in such bad shape when he became a FA that no one wants to give him squat.

The fact Milwaukee is blowing him off is unsettling.

But
Isn’t the fact that Maddox still wants him somewhat reassuring?
by FuturePants on Feb 2, 2009 1:22 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Right
If anyone in Milwaukee should really have a good feel for it, it seems like it would be Maddux. Certainly not Melvin and certainly not your interim manager more than Maddux.
by Brett Perryman on Feb 2, 2009 1:31 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
On the other hand...
if you were about to inherit this pitching staff, wouldn’t you advocate for any living, breathing starting pitcher that might be able to provide something above replacement level? I mean even if Maddux thinks there is only a very small chance that Sheets is ever healthy again, wouldn’t it be in his best interests to go ahead and push for him?

Best part of the article
Free-agent right-hander Ben Sheets, another option for the Mets, could end up with the Rangers, but his talks with Texas have “less momentum” than they did 10 days ago, according to a source. The Rangers want Sheets only on their terms, the source said.
Sounds like JD is driving a hard bargin
by laxtonto on Feb 2, 2009 12:42 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
yeah and I would assume with the Mets out
that Sheets wouldn’t have much negotiating power. It might be more beneficial for him to wait until June and sign with a team that really needs someone for the stretch run and for him to get healthy.
Saying that, I want the Rangers to sign him

How is getting a pro-rated contract better?
So he signs a 1 yr 12 million at the break (gets $6 million), instead of playing all year and getting all of a $8-$10 million deal?
by mattrpav on Feb 2, 2009 1:28 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I'd rather him sign at the start of the season and have a spring training to get ready
Sign him in June and you don’t have him until it might be too late. If you’re contending on June 1 and sign him, then go 1-9 on a road trip to BOS, NYY and TAM and add 60IP to your bullpen’s workload on that trip, suddenly things don’t look so good by the time Sheets joins you.
by Inkara1 on Feb 2, 2009 1:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Others interested?
If the Rangers are only willing to sign him at a very low price I don’t see why some other team couldn’t swoop and get the same bargain. Oakland, Dodgers, Brewers, I can think of several teams that might be able to convince themselves he’s worth it if he falls far enough.

My only problem
is it’s been reported that one of the Rangers’ terms may be a one year deal.
And that’s a terrible idea.
by jthig32 on Feb 2, 2009 12:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i agree
a one year deal is an awful idea. the point to signing Sheets would be to have him around for a possible playoff run in ’10 and an option for ’11.

by NothinG on Feb 2, 2009 12:56 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
My thinking is that they are only willing to gurantee one year with a second option year
Which, with as little leverage as Sheets has, might be the best he can get. I am not convinced it is a money issue, but instead a guaranteed/non guaranteed problem. My guess would be a 2 year deal with a reasonable low level buyout.
by laxtonto on Feb 2, 2009 12:57 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That's what I read
Sheets wants 2 years and the Rangers want to do 1 with the 2nd year being a club option.
I think that’s the right thing to do.
by Coolbean04 on Feb 2, 2009 1:01 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
There's some merit to a one year deal...
1. They can sell the idea of winning this year.
2. If he does well, then why couldn’t we resign him? I know he’d come more expensive but knowing he succeeded with us is worth the extra money we’d have to pay.
3. If he gets hurt and is ineffective for us, we owe nothing for next year when we don’t want to be strapped for cash.

that there’s quite a bit of interest in Sheets from Rangers management, but Tom HIcks, Jr. is putting up a fight against him. Not sure on the reasoning or how much sway his opinion holds to his father.

What if...
they can get a team option for 2010, and a player option for 2011. that sounds fair both ways. Then, imagine a rotation in 2010 of… Sheets, Millwood, Holland, Feliz, and Harrison, Hunter, McCarthy or whomever. Man, the first four of that rotation “could” be something to get excited about!
by brandallini on Feb 2, 2009 1:20 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I like
the three year with multiple options framework for a deal with Sheets. It would need a lot of injury protection built into it, but if he’s healthy the options give the Rangers a chance to benefit for taking a risk.
Check the stats, absolutely, but look at the face.

How about this
We sign sheets to a 3 year deal.
1st year – 9M – bonuses due to IP can = to 12M total
2nd year – Club Option – 9M – bonuses can equal to 12M – 2M buyout
3rd year – Club Option – 9M – bonuses can equal to 12M – 1M buyout
Is that something he would be interested in?

Seeing as how Sheets is so risky nobody wants to touch him, I would imagine he'd pitch pretty good up until July, go on the DL and then one of Holland or Feliz will come up.
