Rangers Closing in on Easy Eddie

Here is the link for your enjoyment...

http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/02/rangers_zero_in_on_guardado.html

The Rangers are working hard to close a deal with reliever Eddie Guardado to fill one of their setup roles. Guardado pitched for the Rangers last year until being traded to the Twins on Aug. 25 and the club still has a high regard for him. A deal should get done in the next day or two.

Everyday Eddie or Gabbard?

Not really sure which one I’d rather have right now as the other lefty in the ’pen.

Eddie for sure

Gabbard can figure out the pen at AAA; he still has an option left.

Guardado and Turnbow

They were both really good in 2005.

Guardado

He wasn’t good last year?

by Adam J. Morris on Feb 2, 2009 7:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i had actually

forgotten how good his stats were last year. he sported a 1.11 WHIP while in TX. I am not sure if it is sustainable and he will need to be used responsibly to stay effective deeper into the year, but it seems like he has some intangible value, so if it is a reasonable one year deal, i guess i am okay with it.

by clark on Feb 2, 2009 7:22 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Guardado was good for the Rangers

but surely I’m not the only one that is getting frustrated that this offseason has seen the worst pitching staff in the league actually lose more talent (Hurley and Benoit) than they have added (Turnbow).

Guardado as an offseason addition is fine, but Guardado as the offseason pitching addition really sucks.

Plus, I just thought it was funny that we are seemingly stocking up on relievers that were really good 4 years ago.

Well

There’s Moscoso and Strop.

But yeah, I’d have preferred to see someone more substantial added. In particular, the bullpen is rather worrisome right now.

My memory of him pitching with the Rangers

was he was pretty good. Of course, for some reason I have a soft spot for every ( other ) day Eddie, so maybe I’m biased

+1

6.14 ERA in the second half, and opponents lit him up to a .337/.400/.506 tune.

I never thought I’d say it, but I’d rather have Derrick Turnbow.

Go look at the game by game graphs on fangraphs...

His last 6 appearances all had BABIP’s or .330.

Maybe he lost some velocity late last season, which is definitely possible but he gave up a total of 5 runs in Minn, 3 in 2/3 of an inning. His falling off the cliff most likely had more to do with fatigue than anything else. Look at all of his peripherals his last 10 games… BB/9 was up, LD%, BABIP, BAVG against, and WHIP all just severely. Everyday Eddie was out of Gas it looks like at the end of the season. Maybe he needs to go to every other day Eddie?

http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs.aspx?playerid=727&position=P&page=7&type=full

If you an get his cheap, sure, why not.

by laxtonto on Feb 2, 2009 3:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Hmn

Well, he did pitch scoreless ball in 4 of his last 5 outings once the Twins started using him extremely sparingly. They figured out not to use him on back-to-back days in September, and in fact only used him on 2 days rest once.

But still, that just lends to the fact that Eddie is 38 years old and is probably less durable than Brandon McCarthy.

Get him cheap, use him as the 2nd lefty

allows Gabbard to get used to the idea of warming up in the pen in AAA and get some time in at some different leverage situations under less pressure in AAA.

People forget that EG pitched around 20 inning in 2007 after returning from TJ and 38 in the 2006 season. Lack of innings the previous year might have a lot to do with his drop off the last 10 games or so. I am to lazy to look on the pitch FX data from his last 12 starts or so to seee if there was a noticable decline in velocity, but his BB/9 went up and so did his LD%.

I have a hard to thinking that he had pitchers fooled all season and then the last 10 games people figure him out. More like nothing left in the tank.

Now the offseason can really pick up steam.

Can’t wait for a big signing by the Rangers now that we’ve gotten the small time out of the way.

will this be

a major league deal? I can’t imagine it would after the way he pitched in the second half of last year. I think Gabbard has a chance to thrive in the bullpen, so I would much rather use him than commit a roster spot to Eddie.
