Kris Benson to sign Minor League Deal

Says Jamey...

According to at least one local report, the Rangers are on the verge of signing righthander Kris Benson to a minor league contract with an invite to big league camp in the next couple days.  Benson hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2006, having missed the 2007 season due to a torn rotator cuff and pitching only briefly for the Phillies’ High A and AAA affiliates last year.

This is similar to last spring’s John Patterson signing, more of a longshot than the Sidney Ponson experiment.  Benson certainly doesn’t displace any frontline candidate for the rotation, and would likely be behind Dustin Nippert and Jason Jennings (not to mention younger pitchers like Derek Holland, Doug Mathis, and Thomas Diamond) on the depth chart of secondary possibilities.

No risk, some possibility of reward...

TR with the reportage.

sign the player with the hottest wife.

pitching depth is never a bad thing. he is either a non-factor (95) or a pleasant surprise (5).

I doubt there are any that are as...

willing to show off their hotness as Mrs. Benson.

a penchant for exhibitionism =/= hotness

even if you like that look, which frankly i dont, there are plenty of girl who pull it off a lot better than she does and im sure at least a few examples of that could be found in ranger wives.

Exactly. She's a mediumly hot stripper. Don't get me wrong- hot strippers are awesome, but it's not like they're hard to find or remarkable in any way.

On a semi-related note: Somebody posted some pics of Mark Kotsay’s wife a while back.

Now there’s a piece to write home about.

Best thing about this ...

is that it might possibly increase the odds that Holland and/or Feliz starts the season with Frisco.

More important in that article:
The Rangers went through some baserunning drills under the guidance of first base coach Gary Pettis and Minor League instructor Wayne Kirby. Better baserunning is a priority under manager Ron Washington.

“We’re getting there,” Washington said. “We were better last year than the year before and we’ll be better this year. I want us to go from first to third better this year and read pitches in the dirt better this year. We’re going to get better.”

And the Rangers were just ranked 3rd in MLB here. Nice!

There's nothing like good baserunning

Thi team’s mistakes on the basepaths last year were inexcusable.

just because

you do well overall in something doesnt negate the mistakes you made. if kobe bryant finished third in scoring but shot 50% from the free throw line you wouldnt dismiss the idea that maybe he should spend a little time working on that part of his game. the rangers definitely had some egregious mental mistakes on the basepaths that really stood out and its important to rectify that.

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Feb 20, 2009 5:19 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I read it already when it was first posted

The Rangers are going to struggle with their pitching and can still struggle a lot with their defense. That means that the things we do well have to be done a whole lot better than the rest of the league if we want to win. That includes cutting down on the stupid and pointless mistakes that were made on the basepaths last year.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Good to hear

Hearing something specific like that pleases me a lot more than hearing the vague default line of managerspeak “we need to be better at the fundamentals”. Maybe if the baserunning improves even more this year, Wash won’t feel like he has to bunt all the time.

Like improved defense?

That was pretty specific the last couple of years and look where that got us. I don’t have any confidence that just because RW says they will work on something, that that means they will improve.

by NorCalRangersFan on Feb 20, 2009 5:38 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure why people think

Jennings is better than Benson. Whatever the case, I hope we see neither in the rotation. What I like most about benson is that he actually pitched at the end of the year (13gs minors) as opposed to Jennings who was in rehab once again.

Daniels is building this team as if he anticipates the Rangers being sent back in time to compete in 1998.

Any chance we can add Sosa to this odd mix?

Frisco & OKC are going to have some pretty damn loaded roations to start the year, assuming Benson starts down there.

Holland
Jennings
Hunter
Mendoza
Diamond
Benson
Feliz
Lizard
Hyatt
Sclacht
Ballard
Kiker
Poveda

Anyone I missed?

Per Scott Lucas on Feb 10:
Texas has roughly 36 available slots for its combined AA, AAA, and MLB pitching staffs. By my count, the Rangers currently have 45 healthy pitchers with experience at AA or higher. They also have a couple of obvious promotions from high-A (Omar Poveda, Kasey Kiker) and several possible ones (Zach Phillips, Evan Reed, Glenn Swanson, Josh Lueke). That means at least 11 of those 45 have to go… somewhere.
