Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Saturday night linkaliciousness

One-time supposed potential Ranger Joe Crede has finally signed.  He goes to the Twins on a one year, $2.5 million base, with the potential of making $7 million if he hits all his incentives.

Former O's pitcher Jason Johnson, signed to a minor league deal by the Yanks, has retina cancer.  I didn't know there was such a thing.

Former Reds pitcher and current Nats exec Jose Rijo has taken a "leave of absence" over the Smiley Gonzalez scandal.  I suspect that the "leave of absence" will end up being permanent.

The AP has a story out on Nolan Ryan's impact on the Rangers since coming on as team president.

KSK's "Twenty Five Random Things About Me:  Matt Stafford" made me laugh, which probably means I'm a bad person.

Will Carroll did a chat on Thursday that was pretty good.

The various BTB contributors each vote on the 5 players they think will be the most productive in 2009.  No Rangers make the list.

This comment in a Randy Galloway column earlier this week caught my eye:

It’s always good for a grin to read or hear those who attempt to justify the Kidd-for-Devin Harris transaction as a win for the Mavericks. And that kind of foolishness surfaced repeatedly this week, which was the one-year anniversary of the deal.

Okay, I'm in Houston, so maybe I'm out of the loop, but...he's kidding, right?  Surely there aren't still people calling that trade a good deal for the Mavs, are there?

Seriously...someone needs to have an intervention with Bill Simmons and tell him Adam Carolla isn't funny.  His mancrush on Carolla is even more embarrassing than Peter King's mancrush on Brett Favre.

Jason Isringhausen has signed a minor league deal with the Rays.

Emmitt Smith is supposedly gone from ESPN, and in memorium, Awful Announcing offers their top 10 Emmittisms.

Kidd Trade

Well i mean you have the usual Bob Ortegel and Mark Followill comments about how kidd really make this team run. How Harris wasnt the right fit for the team. The Hardline was also trying to make the case that the Kidd trade is looking better and better. This was AFTER the All Star game. I guess those 2 first round picks werent good fits either.

Dirk has

publicly said that Kidd is what the mavs needed based on their personnel, going on to say that he was great if you needed a guy to break down defenders one on one and go to the basket rather than run an offense. I don’t think that there is anyone that would argue that devin is a great playmaker. However, the biggest issue with that trade I have is that they decided to make it instead of simply firing avery. This after cubes admitted that players were coming to him privately asking to be traded rather than continue with AJ. Cubes and Jr. have to shoulder the blame for not having the foresight to take this route as Phx just did this season.

by Goyogringo on Feb 21, 2009 9:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

What's Dirk (or any other player or Mav employee) supposed to say at this point?

Seriously. Kidd is your teammate. If anyone came out and started saying, “Jeez, this Kidd guy isn’t very good. Certainly not as good as the obviously much better Devin Harris. Any chance we can still undo that deal?” then that might have some negative influence on team chemistry, right?

I think everyone associated with the team realizes it was a dumbfuck trade at this point, but I totally agree with them keeping their mouths shut about it, especially the players.

Kidd is their teammate, of course they’re gonna have his back.

Devin harris is a terriffic

one on one player and scorer but a shitting point guard. Don’t you remember? He doesn’t create much offense for the rest of the team. His court vision is shitty and never improved while he was here. His defense is overrated. He can’t run Dirk’s staple, the pick and roll worth a shit. He can keep up with quicker point guards but doesn’t play the passing lanes or play good team defense and usually gets torched by by point guards as quick as he is. On a team full of players who suck at passing the ball Devin wasn’t a great fit here; he was a 4th option with a second option mindset. He’s not steve nash and not Kidd rather a one-dimensional offensive black hole. As the #2 scorer on a shitty NJ team, he is going to put up some nice #s but that doesn’t address any of his weaknesses as a player.

And, as to your theory that the entire team is engaging in double-speak when speaking of both kidd and harris, that is just idiotic. If dirk says that Kidd was better for the team with the personnel that they have, justify your arguments by detailing why he is wrong. If you can clearly and convincingly do that, only then can you argue that what he (and 14 other players) says is not what he means when speaking about a hall of fame point guard.

Having said all of that, I would not have entertained any kind of trade or recomposition of the roster until after the season and fired AJ at midseason. The best course of action would have been to wait to hire a new coach and see if other players could be brought in to remake the roster based on team weaknesses (this is a shitty passing team, and a stagnant offense, with no ball movement) and the new coaches philosophy to fix those. For example, if you pair harris with a swingman who passes well (like joe johnson, or Diaw eg) then you might have a roster that works much better with Harris’ skill set. I think it couldv’e worked with Harris, but the team needed to be remade in a different way for a Harris Dirk pairing to work and they probably couldve found a way to do this with a different GM.

So, that wouldve been my solution: Keep Harris, Fire AJ sooner, Fire Jr. after the season, new coach over the summer, new offense, different pieces (Jho, Jet gone).

Wow

Do you really believe that Devin Harris is better than Kidd?

by brettgardner on Feb 22, 2009 12:18 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Depends what you want out of your point guard

And whether you’re taking age into consideration or if you’re in a win-now mindset

by BuckyB on Feb 22, 2009 2:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

For instance

if you actually want a shooting guard out of your point guard, then Devin Harris might be better than Kidd.

Get off my lawn.

by DJCahill on Feb 22, 2009 4:48 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No

It doesn’t depend on any of those things.

Cahill’s right: Harris is a better SG than Kidd. In no aspect of point play does he even approach him.

Aside from people who are, like, IN the organization

the most notable person to me is the oddest. Eddie Sefko was one of the few local media guys who said that it was a bad deal when it was made…and he’s now reversed field and thinks it was a good deal. I haven’t heard anyone else who deserves even the slightest bit of respect defend the deal otherwise, not even here.

FWIW, they are definitely going to try to re-sign Kidd from what I’ve heard. That’s probably not hard to figure out, given that they are all in for the 2010 FA class and that there is NOTHING out there these days. Maybe one of the teams with two pretty good guys will eventually concede one.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 21, 2009 10:02 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Trade

Kidd for Harris will never be even; however, it was not as bad a trade as it is made out to be. First of all, you have to include Antoine Wright on our side. He is turning out to be a very solid player. Never a star but either a good starting SG or at worst a very good off the bench player. His Defense is getting better and better (he did a good job on Kelvin Martin last night) and he adds the element of driving to the bucket which this team needs. He will be with this team for a long time and will be a solid contributor.

Yes, Harris is better, a better driver to the bucket, a better shooter, etc. but Kidd has added his experience and after the 2-7 start this team is 31-15. That would be 55 wins if that pace were over a whole season. 55 wins would put this team in about the #4 seed (maybe #3 but the top 3 go to division winners and 55 won’t win our division).

The part of the trade that makes it tip to to NJ is 1) the 2 #1 draft picks and 2) trading DIOP and then re-signing DIOP with middle level in the offseason.

a) The two #1 – goes without explanation, a dumb dumb part of the trade

b)trading DIOP – if we had an adequate backup C last year I think we fare better. We get a better seed in first round and who knows then. We dearly missed him last year and he was playing okay.

c)resigning DIOP – dumb, dumb. DIOP got lazy once he signed that contract, maybe the MAVS org. should have known that he would. But it killed us, we used it up and then had to dump his contract for two payers that hardly play (Carrol and Hollins).

Agreed

One of the worst parts of the trade, IMO, was using our Mid-level exception on Diop during the off-season

by Boneless on Feb 21, 2009 10:54 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I love this.

Adam Carolla isn’t funny, but David Cross is?

What a silly world.

Really the only reason I see the Kidd trade in any kind of negative light is the over-inclusion of future wiggle room to get it done.

But really—getting the best point guard in the league for several years (assuming the sign) and a player in Wright who is doubtless better than a mid-20s draft pick—that’s a catastrophic trade? For a guy in Harris who’s become the absolute only non-Carter option on a horrible team? A brittle guy who flourishes on a shitty team? He’s good—no question he’s better than I thought he would be—but he’s not a superstar.

Maybe they shouldn’t have tossed in the second first, but the disgusting self-righteousness of trade bashers is enough to make me vomit.

I’d guess your only exposure to him was on The Man Show. That’s really not him at his best. I’d suggest trying to listen to an episode of his radio show, but it was just canceled last Friday when his station switched formats. Give him a chance though — I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
