I'm confused
I just saw this on IMDB:
Best Achievement in EditingWinner: Slumdog Millionaire (2008) - Chris DickensBest Achievement in SoundWinner: Slumdog Millionaire (2008) - Ian Tapp, Richard Pryke, Resul PookuttyBest Achievement in Sound EditingWinner: The Dark Knight (2008) - Richard King
It seems to me that if you win for Best Sound, and win for Best Editing, you should also win for Best Sound Editing.

I'll explain that to you...
when you explain to me how different people win Record and Album of the Year.
Stars in a Texas Night Sky, a Dallas Stars blog from a fan's perspective.
That one's easy
Record = a single the artist released
Album = entire CD

song of the year is the hard one, right?
"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."
Then what about...
Song of the Year?
Shouldn’t that then be Record of the Year?
Stars in a Texas Night Sky, a Dallas Stars blog from a fan's perspective.
No
Song of the Year connotes melody and construction; Record is overall production.

Record is for the artist
Song is for the writer.
Of course, sometimes it’s the same person.

im pretty sure my comment was a satirical joke. dont know why you feel the need to get in a knot about some imagined concept of americanism that i have nowhere offered as my own.

in satire you ridicule
the object of your message in an exaggerated, often unfavorable way. the point being to make those objects seem offense to your audience…im not sure what about its not making sense to you

...Alright
So, after thinking about it, can you come up with one thing in this…

…that could possibly be considered satirical? You just echoed a sentiment that a lot of dunces have. There’s nothing to indicate that it was humorous, witty, sarcastic, ironic, or exaggerated. You didn’t convey anything.

i suppose if you take it literally it doesnt seem satirical
but c’mon i think its a stretch to believe i literally dont view sean penn as an american because of his left-leaning political activisim. it was meant as a gentle knock at the buffoons who label people like penn ‘unamerican’ because of their views and commentary.

there are more than that
going through that list, I think there are around 6 or 7. Still, definitely not many compared to other years

Disagree...
I really liked both, but think Slumdog was a little better.
Of course they are very different kinds of movies too.

I had Slumdog a LITTLE above Wall-E too..
But they were 2/3 of the Top 3 Films of the Year last year for me (with the unmentioned being The Wrestler, my #1).

Penn was very good
And most years, compared to the previous winners, I’d have given the award to him. But for 2008 performances, he’d have been no higher than third on my ballot, behind Rourke and Richard Jenkins.
LOL Sorry the Sooners will score more that 14. - boomer1
I didnt see The Visitor, but I do like Richard Jenkins...
I think that on other years, any of the nominations could have won (I would even throw in Clint Eastwood for Gran Tourino). I just think in this climate, certain roles lend themselves to winning awards. Risk-taking and subject heavily influence the votes. Not that I agree, but Ive seen every movie sans The Visitor and I think that with everything included that Penn (regardless of his political views, which is a ridiculous thing to bring up btw) took the biggest risk and had an overall better performance in what was a better movie IMO..
A Cowboy fan from Dallas residing in enemy terretory since 1990..
The only real nomination I had an issue with...
was Pitt’s. When actors like DiCaprio, Eastwood, Del Toro, and others were snubbed for something that was very obviously a nomination made on the back of a studio’s political push.
On the other hand, had it been a Best Supporting nomination for Burn After Reading, I’d have been all about that, although it likely would’ve cost Michael Shannon his nomination, and that would’ve been a shame.
LOL Sorry the Sooners will score more that 14. - boomer1
Wasn't a big Burn after reading fan...
I guess I was expecting too much with that cast. I agree with you on the Pitt nom… I get that Benjamin Button was a good movie.. I just thought it reminded me of too many other movies to really sit back and appeciate what kind of character he was. All those snubs you listed were better to me than Pitt’s..
A Cowboy fan from Dallas residing in enemy terretory since 1990..
BAR...
From all accounts, is pretty much the most polarizing film of the year. It either works for people, or it doesn’t. Personally, I found it right up there with Big Lebowski as the Coens best comedies, but I can understand how a lot of people didn’t like it near like I did.

Here's a pretty good review
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.

But not entirely off-base.
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
It's kind of hard to distinguish sound from sound editing.
Let’s start with the sound designer (think of the sound designer as the director in charge of sound and Scorsese as the director in charge of the picture). They are in charge of everything you hear, everything that’s recorded: footsteps, dialogue, the coffee being poured, the sound of a face being punched… everything.
Sometimes the sound designer has to ‘create’ sound as opposed to recording it. Movie punches don’t sound like real punches. And nobody knows what an orc sounds like. Sound designers have to come up with all these different layers of audio to give the picture depth, whether they do it live or electronically.
Sound editing is more or less enhancing what’s been recorded… to make you actually ‘feel’ that punch…. They take all those recordings of animal growls and mish-mash it together to form the roar of a tyrannosaurus. Most of this is still under the supervision of the sound designer, but minimal as it may seem, that’s the difference.
Sound editors are also more in charge as far as music is concerned to evoke a mood, and fixing bad audio with regards to recording dialogue relplacement. Basically a sound editor’s job is to master the audio into one cohesive soundtrack.
An award for achievement in editing is more how the picture is cut together … how the movie is visually presented in sequence.. whether that be creatively through quick jump-cut editing (think Requiem For A Dream every time the druggies fix themselves)… or whether it be suggestively dramatic like the climax to The Godfather.
You watch too many movies Sax.
Picture director vs. Sound director
I guess the picture director in those old Adam West Batman shows didn’t think much of the sound director’s abilities.

If you’re alienated by someone’s political point of view, you’re the real douche.
And I’m confused—aren’t you watching because the actors are using that platform to speak? And it wasn’t some totally non-germane rant. It was quite relevant to the movie he just won an award for.

I'm not alienated by views...
I’m just disgusted by the constant hijacking of scenarios by artists and celebrities on a stage, and frustrated that I have no means of rebuttal. So I have slowly faded away into apathy for such events. And I guess you should be more upset with me, then, for trying to watch at all, instead of having such feelings.

As far as the sound, editing, and sound editing thing goes...
I’m guessing that…
1) Slumdog had the best editing
2) Slumdog had the best sound
3) Dark Knight had worse sound than Slumdog, but the editing of that sound was far superior to anybody elses…..even if it ended up sounding like shit.
I miss 1989. I miss 1996. Please make me miss another season in 2008.
wall-e
probably shouldve won sound and maybe sound editing. the entire movie relied on it

I would agree there
when there is not that much dialogue. Wall-e did rely on sound.
On another note, were there really just 3 songs worthy of this year, 2 from Slum and 1 from Wall-e. That is weak.
Another one bites the dust! And another one, and another one, and another one bites the dust!
well there was
springsteens song for the wrestler which is what should have won and won the golden globe but wasnt even nominated for some reason
i saw on another site saying it wasnt nominated b/c it was on his album and not the wrestler’s soundtrack but he could be making that up
go here to view my blog: dirtfromd.blogspot.com
by studcrackers on Feb 23, 2009 9:49 AM CST up reply actions
Yeah that was wrong
It wasn’t nominated because it wasn’t eligible, but it had nothing to do with Springsteen’s album.
Here’s the word from the LA Times.
"Unlike other branches — such as acting, which uses a preferential ballot — the music makers screen clips of all the eligible entries and then score them on a sliding scale from 6 to 10 with half point increments in between. If a member has a song in contention, they are ineligible to vote. Only those songs that score an average of at least 8.25 out of 10 among the participating music branch members are eligible to be nominated.
Since there were only three nominees this year, we know that they were the only ones to make this cut-off score. Even if Springsteen’s song scored 8/10 from everyone voting, the academy has ruled that this would not be enough to merit an Oscar nomination."
LOL Sorry the Sooners will score more that 14. - boomer1
When there's no dialog
I think you would argue that the whole movie relied on the visuals, not the sound. I’m not saying that the sound wasn’t important. I’m just saying the visuals are what really mattered. It was amazing how expressive Wall-e could be without making a sound.
by NorCalRangersFan on Feb 23, 2009 11:41 AM CST up reply actions
i understand your point
they had to use body/robot body language, but there was alot of sound that had to fill the air without dialogue and sounds were used in place of words and to give the moods. Dialogue isn’t the major factor in sound editing.
Another one bites the dust! And another one, and another one, and another one bites the dust!
Just cause you're best overall
doesn’t mean you’re the best in every part of it. Slumdog was for the most part better than TDK in sound..music, sound mixing, etc.. But when it came to Sound Editing TDK was slightly better.
