OT: Champions League (spoilers)
It's here, ladies and gentlemen. The knockout round (first) is here and in a little less than an hour, some very nice match-ups kick off. First legs are today and tomorrow. I will be recording and watching later this evening so, after the matches start, I will not be following up on this site (just in case). I did tag it with 'spoiler' because someone may want to discuss the matches as they are played. I know that we have several people on the site that are fans of football so I have to ask: Who ya got?
Tuesday:
Arsenal v. Roma
Lyon v. Barcelona
Atletico v. Porto
Internazionale v. Manchester United
Wednesday:
Chelsea v. Juventus
Villareal v. Panathinaikos
Real Madrid v. Liverpool
Sporting Lisbon v. Bayern Munich
Hope everyone enjoys!

Probably out
The Dubliner (on lower Greenville) usually shows the Champions League matches, so I’ll probably be down there. We don’t get a huge crowd- about 8 or 10 (we usually have at least 25 for the weekend matches at the Tipperary) but it’s worth it just to be able to cheer the team on with a few fellow fans.
Plus the live airing of the match is on Setanta (which I don’t have) at 1:45, and there’s no way I’ll be able to hold off looking at the score until ESPN Classic replays the match at 4:00.

Nice
I will will be taking the day off on 03/11 to go see the 2nd leg at The Londoner in Addison. Should be great, depending upon the outcome of today’s match.
You are right about watching it with fellow fans. Quite a bit different from watching it in your living room. Not too many things are cooler than a pub erupting in cheers when a goal is scored.
Really considered taking the day off from work and heading to The Londoner today but just can’t do it. Plus, I have church tonight and going to the pub and not consuming a few pints is not likely to happen. I will watch tonight at about 10pm and try not to wake up the wife screaming at the TV.

Re: Nice
I don’t know whether it’s sad or funny, but last year, I got 22 paid vacation days. I used 14 of them for Champions League matches.
The year before that, I took off for every Liverpool Champions League match except one, starting with the group stage.
One of the many reasons I’m 37 and still single… :)

I may take the 11th
since it could very well be the last meaningful one Arsenal plays this season, and since it’s even more likely that they won’t even see the CL next season.

I love that bar. Used to be one of my faves when I still lived in Big D. Along with the Blarney Stone just down the street (RIP).

I'll be crying
over a picture Mikel Arteta
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
Bah...
…he almost killed my fantasy team last week.
Although, this probably matters more to me than to you…

Arteta
As a Liverpool fan, I’m contractually obligated to hate Everton, but if I could have one player from the Blues, it would be Arteta, no doubt.
I’m a big Tim Howard fan as well. Team USA’s keeper, plus probably one of the most famous people with Tourette Syndrome other than Jim Eisenreich. I estimate I’m about #500 on that list.
"I dont care to debate with a troll." - Sharky
Jo is an interesting player too...
…less interesting with the injury to Arteta though.

I can't say that I'm very confident
Arsenal hasn’t scored in three Premier League matches, Arshavin can’t play in CL, and Adebayor, Fabregas, Walcott and Rosicky are all still out, among others.
And Roma has some talent.
Agreed
I don’t see how Arsenal can overcome everything that is going against them right now. I’ve got Roma moving on 2-2, 1-0.

A great moment in Simpsons history...
…that line makes me laugh every time.
We couldn't have known it at the time but we definitely killed the wrong Belushi brother.
Thank you!
I could not place that line to save my life. I kept thinking that I had heard it multiple times but could not remember who said it.

ESPN 360
Watching on-line at work…can’t decide which match to go with.
Leaning towards ManU/Inter. Although, I don’t get to watch Barca very often…

Stupid Time Warner
doesn’t support 360. I can’t find a very good stream either.

Have you tried
I use it for the Everton matches. It’s not great, but it’s the most relaible free stream I’ve found.

Not that I would ever condone...
But you can find some “borrowed” live streams for CL matches – along with just about everything else – at www.justin.tv

So I checked the scores at half time on my phone...
and it said Barcelona had 71% of the possession and was down 1-0. I’m glad to see they at least got the draw.
Also, go Chelsea!!!
Barca-Lyon
I’m watching the game right now. And while Beckham deserves all the accolades he gets for being one of the best in the world on set-pieces, Lyon’s Juninho isn’t far behind. I don’t watch a lot of Lyon matches, but it seems like every time I see them, that guy scores on a free kick.

General Manager
FC Dallas & Pizza Hut Park
FC DALLAS SIGNS COLOMBIAN INTERNATIONAL DAVID FERREIRA
FRISCO, TX (Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009) – FC Dallas General Manager Michael Hitchcock today announced the signing of Colombian midfielder / forward David Ferreira, who becomes the third player loaned to FCD from Brazilian partner Clube Atletico Paranaense, joining current Dallas midfielder Andre Rocha (2008-present) and Ricardinho (2007-2008). Ferreira will join the team for preseason training at Atletico Paranaense’s training facility in Curitiba, Brazil from February 26-March 6, and will return to Dallas and be eligible for regular season selection upon receipt of his visa. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We’re very excited to be able to add a player of Ferreira’s ability and experience,” said FC Dallas General Manager Michael Hitchcock. “If you look at the majority of teams who have won the MLS Cup, they’ve had a true number 10; an attacking midfielder who can be a real game-changer. In David Ferreira, we have a player who has played at the highest level with the Colombian national team, been one of the top players for Atletico Paranaense in the Brazilian first division, and now we look forward to bringing him to FC Dallas, where we think he’ll be able to help take this team to the next level and contend for a championship.”
Born in Santa Marta, Colombia, Ferreira is a member of the Colombian national team, having most recently represented his country in an October 11, 2008 World Cup Qualifier versus Paraguay. He was also a part of the Colombia team that won the CONMEBOL Copa America in 2001, in addition to participating in the 2004 and 2007 editions of the competition.
The 29-year-old joined Clube Atletico Paranaense in 2005, where he has started 175 games (out of 179), scoring 38 goals and adding 42 assists. While with the Brazilian first division club, Ferreira faced FC Dallas on March 7, 2007 in the first-ever USA-Brazil Challenge game in Curitiba, Brazil. From February to June 2008, he spent time on loan to Dubai club Al-Shabab, making 12 appearances on the way to winning the United Arab Emirates league title, before returning to Atletico Paranaense.
“David Ferreira is one of the players we identified very early in our search for a number 10,” said FC Dallas Head Coach Schellas Hyndman. “I saw him for the first time about three years ago when I was doing a coaching course in Brazil. Atletico Paranaense was very excited about this player that they had picked up from Colombia, so I have been following his career and he’s been a steady player and a difference-maker for them. Not only is he a gifted, talented central midfielder but he has also played many times at second forward. He is an all-around team player; plays on both sides of the ball; is very technical; has great vision; and we’re hoping he can raise us to a new level.”
Ferreira began his professional career with Colombian Primera B club Expreso Rojo in 1997. Two years later, he moved within the country’s second division to Real Cartagena, and won the league title. Ferreira then joined first division (Copa Mustang) club America de Cali in 2000, where he would win three consecutive league championships (2000-2002), before moving to Atletico Paranaense in 2005.
FC Dallas and Clube Atletico Paranaense have worked together as partner clubs since September 2006, an agreement that includes among other elements, the USA-Brazil Challenge; the opportunity to loan players to each other; the opportunity for Dallas to conduct preseason training at Atletico Paranaense’s world-class training facilities; and the exchange of best practices in all areas of business, sport, and youth structures. In 2008, Atletico Paranaense product Rocha led FCD with eight assists and was an MLS Newcomer of the Year nomination in his first season in the league.
FCD will kick off the 2009 Major League Soccer season on March 21 versus the Chicago Fire at Pizza Hut Park (7:30 p.m. CT).

if your a STH of some sort you got this:
Dear Loyal Plan Holder:
I hope you’re having a great start to your week. I’m very excited to announce that we’ve signed our #10 (attacking center midfielder)! And as a loyal plan holder, I wanted to share the great news with you before we announce it to the media.
This morning, we’ll officially announce that we’ve signed Colombian international David Ferreira. David is a member of the Colombian national team and one of the top players for Clube Atletico Paranaense in the Brazilian First Division. He is an outstanding player who brings a great deal of experience at the highest level to FC Dallas. Ferreira has been a winner on every team that he’s been with and we hope that FCD is no different. He will start training with the team in Brazil later this week, and will come to Dallas as soon as he receives his work visa.
Throughout the history of the League, the majority of teams who have won the MLS Cup had a strong attacking center midfielder, who was a game changer. In Ferreira, we feel that we’ve added that same type of player.
If you remember, we entered the offseason with three primary goals for this team. We felt we had a strong foundation of players but needed to upgrade the team in the following areas…
- Add a left-sided midfielder. We accomplished this with the acquisition of one of the top left mids in MLS, Dave van den Bergh, in a trade with New York Red Bulls. Dave has already proven to be a great addition to the team.
- Improve our defense. We’ve added three players who have brought significant depth to our back line; Steve Purdy from 1860 Munich in Germany, Costa Rican international Daniel Torres, and George John with a 1st Round pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft.
- Bring in an experienced international #10. The final piece of the puzzle is finally here. We identified Ferreira as our top choice for the attacking center mid position (although he can also play withdrawn striker, as needed). And we’re overjoyed to have been able to get the deal finalized. We worked very hard on this and want to thank our great partners, Clube Atletico Paranaense, for agreeing to the deal and sharing one of their top players with us. We know all of our fans are going to enjoy seeing Ferreira play with the rest of your team.
Here’s the official release that will be sent to the media momentarily. Thanks for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you at Pizza Hut Park this season. Less than four weeks until the home opener on Saturday, March 21st. It’s going to be a fun one!
Sincerely,
Hitch

FCD
Yeah, I was pretty down on them at the end of the season, but I think they’ve done a nice job this off-season in addressing the defense (a massive weakness the past few seasons) and I’m excited to see what Ferreira, Cunningham, and Cooper can do this year.
Granted, we’re probably going to lose Kenny to Europe sooner rather than later, but I selfishly hope he stays in Dallas.
"I dont care to debate with a troll." - Sharky
ive got a wild guess that kenny gets his paycheck and stick around for a while
we cant really expect him to stay for his whole career, but we can find a median for a bit…
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
Last year's
close call seemed like kind of a tipping point to me. I don’t have much invested in FCD and wouldn’t have minded seeing him get a chance in Europe, so while I’m certainly not informed, I don’t think I’m biased either. And it just had the feeling of the only realistic opportunity for him to leave for a little while. Things change quickly of course.
