Rangers Organization-Wide Rule 5 Eligibility
It's a work in progress but I doubt there's more than a handful of mistakes to be corrected.

Hmmmm...
Andrus and Feliz will probably be on the 40 man before the season is up.
Jones and Castillo are maybes.
Everyone else seems unlikely, barring a big step up this season, it seems.

You don't need Extra Innings
Direct TV shows just about all the games, they are just sometimes on the alternate feed

Castillo is the guy who
jumps out as a potential tough call.

Disagree
Is Castillo even in A+ to start the season?
As a starter again would he necessarily be there by year’s end?

Castillo
I bet he starts in Hickory as a starter while they hold someone back in extended like Perez or Boscan or Pimental. Then around mid-May when those guys jump in he moves to Bakersfield and his role will most likely depend on how he does to start the year.

Of course that’s kind of just a reflex for you when it comes to me.
As I said, a pitcher with a good arm and good stuff doesn’t have to be doing extremely well as a starter in high a to be a tough call. Those guys are more like slam dunks. Take a closer look at guys who are on 40 man rosters. It’s certainly not a sure thing, but his talent and situation stand out a bit in this sort of discussion.

2009
doesn’t look like much of a problem. The fall of 2010 could be interesting.

Yep
Like I mentioned below I count 8 guys who will probably get added either during the year or at the end. Tats not including Holland or Smoak who will almost assuredly be on by the end of 2010. So in the next two years we could be looking at 10-15 brand new young guys on the 40 man roster.

40 man
Looks right now like at least three spots will have to be opened this year. Feliz, Andrus, and Beau Jones.
I think it would take a Holland-esque season from Castillo to get drafted.
Whittleman could make a case for himself if he emerges this season although I think if that happens he would simply take Metcalfs place on the 40.
2010 is when it gets really interesting because I count 8 guys who, based on last year and thinking about 2 years from now, would need to be added. Beltre, Boscan, Font (simply off potential), Gomez, Kiker, Laughter, Lemon, and Reed. Thats not including Holland who will almost assuredly be on by then. Add in Main and possibly Beavan who could be knocking on the door by the end of 2010 and its gonna get real interesting.

that's alot
of magic beans. :)
Either next winter or sometime during the 2010 season I expect JD to make a blockbuster trade that ships out a few of the guys that might cause a roster problem.

Missing Name...
If Scott’s around, hopefully he already realized that Pedro Strop‘s name is missing. As for who to include in 2009, I really would consider tracking Brennan Garr. Renny Osuna might be on the radar as well. Manuel Pina’s name could become important depending on how the Rangers handle the catching situation.
The thing that could complicate things is if the Rangers were to add Michael Ballard or Michael Schlact during the season. Based on the injury history of many of the guys currently slated to be on the 2009 pitching staff, that could very well come true. If Kea Kometani rebounds he could appear in Arlington as well. How the Rangers would handle those situations after the season could be interesting.

Fringe guys
I don’t think those guys would cause that big a deal unless they came up and absolutely dominated. They would be guys who are added during the season and then DFAd in the winter right before rule 5 and assigned back to the minors. They don’t worry me.

Most of those names
are guys that are largely inconsequential in the big picture, ones that every organization has several of. Schlact improving so much that he’s even a consideration for the offseason 40 man roster would be a development that I’d certainly welcome (and be surprised by). Same goes for Garr, Osuna, Ballard and certainly Kometani. These guys are the definition of fringy prospects, not that a couple won’t carve out somewhat relevant major league careers, but no more likely to do so than other guys we’ve been giving non roster contracts to each winter.

I'm inclined to agree...
bigsteve said that DFA’ing some of those guys after the season, assuming any of Kea Kometani, Michael Schlact or Michael Ballard winds up in Arlington, is a possibility. Personally, I’d be for taking the non-tendering route that the Rangers took with Doug Mathis. I’m just thinking that maybe between several of those guys there’s a decent , not probable, chance that one or two of those guys makes for a tough decision.
The only name that stands out that bigsteve, who I was replying to, didn’t mention was Brennan Garr. (As I’m writing this, I see Andy Seiler agrees with me).

I love the 40 so damn much. Nothing beats it. It's better than everything else. It's unbeatable. Er... what's the phrase I'm looking for here regarding the 40?
The 40 Trumps All!!!
I hate Michael Young.

Thanks for reminding on Strop
I’d also left out Mark Hamburger originally. Added him at the last minute. And Andy is right — Strop belongs at the bottom along with guys like Kendy Batista and Adelberto Flores. Anyone who’s ever been released becomes a year-to-year guy unless he signs a longer contract or gets added back to the 40.

Thanks for doing this...
I figured that with so many names in the Rangers organization, the guys who haven’t been around long enough to become staples nor who were acquired so recently to be the “talk of the town” could easily be forgotten. Pedro Strop and Mark Hamburger would both fit the bill.
I was surprised about one name though. According to your list, Joseph Ortiz is Rule 5 eligible after 2010. According to milb.com, Ortiz was born August 13th, 1990. If you’re right, if he’s not protected, he’ll be eligible to be taken only months after reaching the ripe age of 20. I thought Omar Poveda, who turned 21 last September, was young when the Rangers protected him this past off-season. When did Ortiz sign?

Ortiz
Signed August 26, 2006, 13 days after turning 16. He’s one of the guys I’m not totally sure about. Technically, he signed while the 2006 minor-league season was ongoing, but his first contract year might still be 2007 for R5 purposes, making him R5-eligible in 2011. There’s a few players like that I can only guess about until I hear something official.

I wonder if clubs would be reticent to take on someone
like castillo in a trade package due to his rule 5 situation, that is, if he has an encouraging year in 09. It would be great to cycle some of the good prospects out if we can’t protect them on the 40 but then another team will have the same problem, keeping Castillo on the 40 for 2 years…

Kaz Fukumori
I really have high hopes for him.
Just kidding. I’m surprised he’s still around. I thought he was long gone.

Interesting name to bring up
IIRC correctly, Kaz was last year’s example of why spring training sample sizes suck – went nuts over spring training, and imploded immediately after the season began.
Seems there’s almost always one of those types every spring.
Yeah. Spies. They're little guys with beady eyes and long fingernails. They plant bugs that can pick up the hush of a man's heartbeat - or the whisper of a falling hair.
