Tuesday morning things
Jeff Wilson writes that a deal is just about done with Eddie Guardado on a one year minor league deal with incentives that could make it worth $3 million. This, of course, as Wilson notes, being a minor league deal, keeps room on the 40 man free should Ben Sheets decide to come to Texas.
Wilson also quotes Jon Daniels as saying the team would like to add some starting pitching depth, given Eric Hurley's season ending injury, and thus is continuing to talk to Jason Jennings' agent about a minor league deal.
Mike Hindman runs down the list of the remaining free agent starting pitchers, and the list is pretty motley. He suggests that Ben Sheets might be best served signing a one year deal, and re-entering the free agent pool next offseason, when there should be a paucity of free agent starters on the market.

Ben Sheets
How does a one-year deal clear up his injury concerns? Maybe he doesn’t pitch his 198th inning and get hurt?
Dude is in his 30s. He is what he is. Ben Sheets is an injury risk.

Earning a spot
I have not been a fan of this team’s willingness to allow players to force their way onto the 25 man roster based simply on spring training. Most notable is Sammy Sosa, but on the flip side, they did not allow Mench on the team, which to this day I am still surprised at. I just don’t think usong only Spring Training is a reliable enough litmus test for such a decision.

For the veterans, the Rangers get to see them close up, they have time to evaluate their health and project their 2009 contribution. For someone like Andrus, they get the opportunity to see how he improves over 3 weeks of games. They get to evaluate his coachability, etc. I believe Washington and the Ranger FO have learned form the Matt Kata experience.

You're overstating that concern
Bringing a guy in on a NRI gives the team a lot more time to evaluate him, it’s not just about his ST numbers, it’s a ton of close up scouting time. And in the case of the Rangers they need depth right now so they aren’t forced to rush guys to the majors again.

"Nullity" or not, Cat's here.
and was in the OF last year for 26 games. He’s a part of the roster shuffle I’m discussing that’s going to be needed if Borbon starts playing with the big club every day.
I imagine at sometime the Rangers are also going to want to see if CDavis can move to the OF as well if Smoak is all that.
The current Texas OF situation is a star (Josh), a good prospect (Borbon) and cluster-F of question marks and mediocrity.

After hearing Nolan's comments about Murphy
over the weekend, it sounds like he’s not going anywhere.
If the Rangers were a definitive 90 win team with a chance to contend I could see having Marlon Byrd on this roster but we’re not and he’s just taking abs away from players who may be here if this thing ever gets turned around.

Byrd
The draft pick he nets us could become a player that is around when this thing gets turned around. You got to play him to get that draft pick

My thoughts...
Exactly, Cruz, Hamilton and Borbon give you enough defensive upside if Borbons offensive production lacks.

Not only did KW say the White Sox were done dealing this offseason, but they’ve got to trade someone now, don’t they?
Hopefully, this isn’t a precursor to a Dye to Texas deal.

Good article over at
USS Mariner talking about the team they built (mostly around defense) in 2003.
http://ussmariner.com/2009/02/02/the-template-for-success-in-2009/
Not sure what to think about that approach although I loves me some defense. Yes they ended up with a 93-69 record but…
They play in a pitcher’s park and that particular team had a great start (48-22 on June 18) but were below .500 (45-47) the rest of the season. I think the major problem may have been that their players all grew old at the same time and not that they chose to build their team around defense.

He said
he missed Danks & Eddy V but loves him some Josh.
Talked about TJ surgery, had conversations with Nolan who stressed to him the importance of getting over the mental hump (“telling your brain to just let go of what happened in the past”).
It took 1.5 months of games to stop worrying about his arm.
His conditioning this off-season was the best it has ever been. Has been working out in Arlington and dropped 23 lbs.
Starting pitchers have to be prepared to go more than 6 IPs. Feels like he can do it in Texas because he grew up in Nawlins and doesn’t think there is any difference in DFW.
He is a new dad as well…son named Colton James.
Holds Nolan in supreme reverence “One of the best guys I’ve ever met in baseball. He’s very approachable. Nolan came up to speak with every pitcher on the team during their winter warm-up and made himself very available.”
Mike Maddux wants pitchers to go deeper and is pounding this into their mentality.
Pitch counts – Says the hitters will let you know when you’ve reached your pitch count. If you’re still missing/breaking bats, you’re not at your pitch count.
The way to get around the patience of batters is to keep throwing strikes. Talked about players in the Oakland minor league system and the way to combat those teams is to get on top of them, especially throwing strike one.
Diamond said as a youngster he read countless books about pitching when he was younger. He played all sports when he was younger but told his dad one day that he wanted to be a pitcher. He read “The Mental Game of Pitching” (I have no idea who wrote it). Said both he and his dad read those books and they tried to implement something from each chapter they read into his pitching. Dad would paste little sayings on his bathroom mirror or in his room.
Apparently he is into cooking as well. His best dish is bbq shrimp or steak and sauteed mushrooms.
Has it worked out with his wife where he takes care of Colton in the mornings and he has afternoons to work out. He gets to sleep early at night but takes care of the kiddo in the mornings while the wife sleeps. Says it is going to be tough when he is Arizona next week.
He did well and sounds like a good guy.

Diamond developed quite the gut
during his rehab, looked about 40 lbs heavier. He probably still has about 10-15 lbs to go to get down to 225.
by Goyogringo on Feb 3, 2009 2:18 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I wonder why Diamond losing that much weight
wasn’t discussed by anybody in the local media?
I know he fell off the radar screen a little bit but jeeeez, we found out that McCarthy gained 25 lbs in four months and that Millwood has also dropped some weight as well.
23 lbs is fairly significant.

If the fee is 10mm rising to 12mm, that’s so much more reasonable than the 20mm being bandied around earlier.

Right, last year
When he put together the best season (by far) in his career at the age of 31.
All projections have him (and his 233 BABIP among other things) regressing pretty significantly.
Taking him and his $1mm+ salary in r9 of this type of draft is crazy.x

Right on.
t ball would argue that Hamilton is due to improve this year as a centerfielder but he wasn’t much better in Cincinnatti, and at his age I don’t know that he’s cut out to keep playing there.
This is what I’ve been preaching since the offseason started. Put Hamilton in right, Byrd in center. Byrd is the perfect one-year stopgap for Borbon.
You just don't know when to keep your mouth shut, do you Saxy boy?
by oc on Feb 3, 2009 1:10 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The problem with Hamilton
is that he simply hasn’t played that much in CF. He has the speed and athleticism to play anywhere on the field and I do think that giving him more playing time and him gaining that additional in-game experience would be huge for him. I can understand if the team doesn’t want to take the risk and would rather just go with the more sure thing, but I still think Hamilton could adjust and be just fine in CF.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

In more detail, though, I would say
Hamilton might improve a bit as he plays more after being out of baseball so long, but in the long run he’s not a CFer and needs to move to RF. I’m fine with him being in CF this year until Borbon is deemed ready. I disagree with Neyer that Byrd can’t play CF, at least in the short term. Hopefully Borbon keeps drawing walks and getting his glove ready from April-July and makes himself the obvious choice then.
