TR- Sheets unlikely for Texas:(

http://trsullivan.mlblogs.com/

Well, Bummer.

2. Did the Rangers look? Yes. Sheets lives here and is from Louisana. He is also a No. 1 starter. That mandates the Rangers consider him. The Rangers also need pitching. That mandates Sheets being interested in them. It's a perfect match. They had two weeks to get it done. Both have little in the way of alternatives. And it's still not done.

3. The Rangers can't afford him? Don't go there. Budget? Economy? No. The owner of this team has been willing to commit when he feels it's necessary. Millwood, Padilla, Zito, Kinsler, Young, amateur draft, international signings, ballpark improvement. Times are tough but Hicks would commit to Sheets if he felt the need. It's obvious he doesn't.

Something just doesn't feel right. This just isn't going to get done.

That part right there,"Times are tough but Hicks would commit to Sheets if he felt the need. It's obvious he doesn't."

WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  THIS TEAM NEEDS PITCHING.  ALWAYS HAS AND ALWAYS WILL.  THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH SIGNING THIS GUY FOR TWO YEARS TO HELP THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR MINOR LEAGUERS.  I CAN'T TAKE HICKS.  ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. And yes I know the caps were on.  thats me shouting.

Hicks is an idiot

Honestly, why cant we get any owners in this city who actually cares about winning? Sadly, the only one I think we have is Mark Cuban.

to prove my point even more
Hicks, in a TV interview in Dallas with WFFA sports anchor Dale Hanson, said “It’s unfortunate” that his hockey team the Dallas Stars won the 1999 Stanley Cup. Because it lost him a little bit of money.

Nolan told Norm yesterday

that Sheets’ agent and JD were due to get back together very shortly, possibly today. TR’s opinion seems to lack this detail. There still may be life there.

The moves being made are too extra for my taste.

Sounds like TR is just speculating

But I’ve basically come to the same conclusion. There’s no explanation for Sheets not being signed this late in the offseason except for teams beleiving that the guy’s elbow is just fucked.

Doug Melvin is a smart GM

The Brewers’ window of opportunity to win was opened a couple of years ago and still remains open.

They have a glaring need for proven starting pitching.

They have room in the budget for Sheets.

Sheets pitched well last year.

Nobody else in MLB is going after Sheets.

This is a time where I will give Tom Hicks & Boy Blunder the benefit of the doubt.I suspect that Sheets is not worth the risk for a small market team and that the Rangers are probably better off spending their money on somebody else.

Geez...

Even when you’re “giving them the benfit of the doubt”, you just CAN’T HELP calling at least one of them by a dismissive name, can ya? Just even for one post??

Your “benefit of the doubt” seems as sincere as an NFL owner giving his coach a “Vote of confidence”.

small market team

Are you saying the Rangers are a small market team? That is not what you are claiming in the Thursday A.M. thread.

DFW is the number 5 media market and

the population continues to boom.

The Texas Rangers play in a large market, one of the biggest in all of MLB.

media market size does not directly 100% correlate with ability to spend money.

I’m betting this is the Rangers way of bluffing to Sheets in hopes he lowers his asking price. Sullivan is the Ranger’s mouthpiece in much the same way that Heyman is Boras’ puppet.

I have

come to the same conclusion. I rarely read TR’s stuff.

by JTodd on Feb 5, 2009 2:19 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The only problem with TR's speculation is the question:

Where else would Sheets go?

The Brewers haven’t discussed any type of contract outline with Sheets. No one else has either. His only other option is that crazy idea to sit out and hope someone will pay a half season for him. Sure, he’d get a contract to pitch a half season, but how would it pay more than what the Rangers have suggested.

Unfortunately for Sheets, his market is a single team. I can’t imagine he won’t sign, though.

He could go the mid-season route

a contender might not be so averse to signing him for only 3 months or so.

I still don't see how it would be more lucrative or position him better for next offseason.

But, if that’s what he wants to do, then fine. I don’t want to see the Rangers give him 3-years just because he would rather pitch for 3 months than take a 1-yr deal with an option for a second.

by rooster on Feb 5, 2009 9:33 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I guess the thinking is

that if he waits that long he’s had 9 months off or so to get “healthy.” If he comes back and pitches lights out for 3 months — that could up his price tag for next year. If he pitches for only 3 months — that’s less time to get injured.

I dunno — I think it’s a possibility, it just might not be his best option.

I'm suspecting more and more

that most teams in MLB are convinced he won’t pitch this year at all.

Maybe he should have surgery. Who would pay for it, though.

The clubs clearly don’t want to pay for his rehab just to see him get well and go away. Maybe his agent should pony up the cash or have it some sort of clever way of paying for it through insurance.

I think most folks would still be skeptical even if he had a nine month rehab and pitched only three months this year. But, then again, folks may be more willing to take a risk on him next year, since he would be about the best arm on the market, so long as Lackey signs an extension.

I think that is the sticking point.

I think teams feel that paying for sheets is paying for the privilege of paying his medical expenses and watching him sit out the year.

I think Jamey is right on in suggestion a pay structure similar to the Yankees and Jon Lieber.

Surgery

IIRC, didn’t the Cardinals offer a two-year contract to Mulder when they knew he would be out almost the entire first year? They knew they would be paying him for his rehab in the first year, but were hoping that in the second year he would be effective and cheap enough to justify that cost. A team could make a similar offer to Sheets, although it would be a big risk, as the Cards’ Mulder contract turned out to be money flushed down the drain.

I said it a few weeks ago...

…and I guess I’ll say it again, because not much has changed in my eyes.

You either sign Sheets to a 2 year with an option for a third at minimum OR you pass on him. The reasoning:

1) If he does turn it around and pitch well, you don’t have to try and resign him to what would be a higher salary.

2) If he does have the medical issues and you pay for his medical stuff, he can’t just walk on you after the one year.

3) The “potential” of acquiriing a true ace on the cheap is very enticing, and the risk is there. However, if he is actually OK, it would be very nice to have a guy of his caliber for a few years. Yes, it is a high risk move that could pay off or go down in flames.

I just don’t think in any scenario, you can justify doing a one year deal. It makes no sense. Almost more risky with less potential payoff than a 2-3 year deal.

I’m the biggest proponent of bringing in Sheets, but if they feel they can’t invest more than one year (understanding that there are a myriad of ways to structure the contract), then the Rangers must pass.

My two cents….again

I miss 1989. I miss 1996. Please make me miss another season in 2008.

Agreed.

I don’t want another one year mercenary see ya later player/pitcher where he bumps up his value over one year and has no motivation to see the team do well over the long-term.

by Josey Wales on Feb 5, 2009 1:54 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Go to a team in a pitcher's park and offer his services on a super cheap one year deal w/incentives, plus a clause prohibiting him from being offered arb.

If the price gets low enough a lot of teams will get interested real fast (see: Penny, Brad), and pretty much all of them will be superior places to build up a pitcher’s rep on a short deal.

The Dodgers might make some sense, as he’d be good PR if Manny goes elsewhere.

The Angels presumably have some money to spend. The Brewers, Cubs, Cards, Indians, Mets, Mariners, Giants, Astros, etc.

I’m just throwing out wild guesses here, but it only takes one team.

Good points, but he hasn't come down to the Rangers price, and no one else has seemed interested,

even at that price.

He might wait until late in spring training to see if someone becomes desperate due to injury. I can’t see him waiting much longer than that, because potential contracts will become quite a bit less lucrative as the season progresses.

This one definitely has a better chance the the 10:30 signing time.

I think that Ben Sheets will sign with the Rangers on February 6th at 2:34 pm

Sheets....

I am wondering if maybe the hold up is that Sheets has not backed off his demands of a multi-year deal…and that added to his risky medical history has teams backing away.

At some point you would think he would be willing to sign a 1 year deal (probably not here however) , unless he himself knows how hurt he really is.
