Sullivan: Rangers rotation stays as-is

T.R. Sullivan says that with the 2 year deal with Ben Sheets falling apart, the Rangers are going to stand pat on their rotation.

Jason Jennings is apparently likely to end up signing a minor league deal, and someone else may end up being an NRI, but otherwise, the rotation is what it is.

And we've got a quote from Jon Daniels:

"I think if our veterans stay healthy and our young guys improve, we will be all right," Daniels said.

That's probably true.  But of course, we've been saying that, it seems like, for 10 years around here.

Ugh

This sucks, but at this point in time, staying pat is probably the right course of action. Perhaps there will be a catcher trade in ST.

Debatable.
The two sides were close to agreement on a two-year deal, according to a major-league source, but they already had concerns regarding the right-handers’ checkered health history. It is believed that the physical examination revealed the tear and caused the Rangers to scotch the deal.

So, was “the framework” of a deal done? Isn’t that the verbage teams always use, pending the physical, after a contract is ageed to – especially for a player with injury concerns?

I'm not.

We’ve got a solid closer and a bunch of cheap interchangeable arms to throw at the wall.

If just two of those other guys (Chris-John, Eddie, Turnbow, Rupe, Madrigal, Gabbard, Nippert, etc.) step up and have good seasons, we’ll be fine.

This, +1, wreck or whatever I should say here to point out that I agree

The bullpen has a lot of question marks, but it shouldn’t be too hard to find some decent arms. It won’t be enough to carry a crap rotation like in 04 or 07, but there is a very small chance it is as terrible as last year’s.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

It sounds like JD would want Holland to get a shot as soon as he is ready which might not be later than June.

but see, they have

the Mike Young move was HUGE. may not pay dividends for another year, but it was huge. I didn’t expect it until 2010 at the earliest. and the Laird trade wasn’t splashy, but we got two intreaguing arms for a catcher that clearly didn’t fit here anymore. plus, at the end of the day, I really like the Turnbow signing. and getting guys like CJ and maybe Diamond back healthy, I think, will have a huge impact. Plus, Holland and possibly Feliz arriving will be much bigger than, say, a Ben Sheets signing for the future of this team, health questions considered even before the news today.

Defense

That’s true, the team did not sign anyone of huge importance, but they made moves to improve the defense of the team in the short and long term. Moving Young, and planning to move Hamilton within the next year are two smart moves that may not pay immediate dividends but help the team soon. I expect catcher/pitcher defense to be improved also, since last year seems kind of freakish in that way.

Pitching improvement

RE: “I think if our veterans stay healthy and our young guys improve, we will be all right,” Daniels said.

I’ve been saying that since 1989. You’d think that the law of averages would dictate that I’d be right eventually, but the Rangers’ curse is too strong.

I propose a 5-year moratorium on trading any young Ranger pitchers who throw over 90 mph.

by Ajax68 on Feb 5, 2009 3:53 PM CST reply actions

Not like they have many options.

I don’t know of any bigtime pitchers available for trade, and the list of free agents, with Sheets officially declared injured, is pretty much non-existant.

My guess is we see another dozen or so starters this year.

Get off my lawn.

at least this year, you can count on a lot of things happening

that wouldn’t have happened in the past few years:

1) arrival of top-notch pitching talent in multiple waves: Holland, Feliz, Hunter, Diamond
2) arrival of top-notch defense at key positions: Andrus, Borbon, Smoak
3) arrival of an exciting, young defensive wiz of a catcher that can make the pitchers better and has pop at the plate to match: Teagarden
4) several offensive players that are clearly better than the FOTF: Hamilton, Kinsler, Davis, perhaps even Saltalamacchia and Max Ramirez

very young talent coming through in addition to Boggs, Madrigal, Harrison and Hurley (even though he’s lost for the year) that we haven’t seen come at such a quick pace as in the past.

i think 'count on' is a bit of an overstatement

some of those things will surely happen this year, like andrus and holland coming up, but the dividends probably wont be immediate. some of those things wont happen till 2010 probably. but just getting the ball rolling is good. its exciting to have so many talented young guys that will be getting ML experience soon.

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Feb 6, 2009 1:32 PM CST up reply actions

that's my point

I am not EXPECTING to be a great team this year…I hope it happens, but I’m just saying instead of plugging veterans into positions for the sake of fielding a decent team (Sosa, Jennings as our # 3 starter, etc.) we’ve got young guys out there hungry to learn and a chance to finally do it

All the other FA’s would be subtraction by addition, so unless we’re willing to pull the trigger on a deal with Boston we’re stuck with what we’ve got. As usual.

But I’m not gonna worried about it – 2009 just isn’t the year.

It's about time

For the Rangers’ newest promotion- “Fan Pitch Fridays.”

Every Friday home game, the Rangers pick a half-dozen random fans out of the stands, and use them as the staff that night.

It can’t be that much worse than what they already have, and it’ll save some wear and tear on the bullpen.

The one thing we know to be true in baseball is that some veterans get hurt and some prospects don’t improve.

This is why I’ve been so down on 2009 and 2010 Rangers from a probability standpoint. In order for this team to be good in 09 everything has to go just right. Sure it can happen. But almost always a few things go worng and frequently plenty of things go wrong.
