Andruw Jones close to signing with Rangers

Released last month by the Los Angeles Dodgers, outfielder Andruw Jones appears headed for a minor-league contract with the Texas Rangers, according to baseball sources.

Jones, who will be 32 in April, is attempting to revive his career after a disastrous season in Los Angeles. He reportedly turned down an invitation from the Yankees to attend spring training as a non-roster player, but sees opportunity in Texas.

This article is not written by Heyman. This is written by Tim Brown who had more creditability than Jon "Boras puppet" Heyman.

I am skeptical of what Jones can do but if he can return to his old form, he could replace that production we got from Milton Bradley last year.

Good low risk move by JD.

Can't get

too upset about this. Just a minor league deal. If it works awesome, if not whatever.

Or...

If they trade Byrd.

Hamilton/Cruz/Murph/Jones could be pretty decent with Boggs waiting in the wings

That of course is assuming Jones bouces back this year.

oh, and Heyman seemed to be on point

when suggesting the Rangers were interested in Manny as well…

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels told ESPN.com the team has discussed the feasibility of adding Ramirez, but they’ve now dismissed the idea.

what in the world?

I just don’t see the point here, and am worried about the club being pressured to play Jones at a time when they already have several young players that they need to evaluate at OF and DH.

FWST

I think I read a note in the FWST yesterday that the Rangers had worked him out, but didn’t see a fit. But a NRI, no risk potentially pretty decent reward if he rebounds.

I'm interested in the out clause dates.

If it’s April 1, then maybe there’s a chance he gets a spot he doesn’t deserve just so we don’t lose him.

Interesting.

If he sucks, no biggie. If he is productive, play him, perhaps trade him at the deadline. Also, this makes a few other OFers tradable, no? Byrd or Murphy could be traded at some point in the season, especially if Borbon tears it up in AAA.

Hopeful

I’m hoping that he will rebound this year and could get something for him at the deadline.

by Monkey Brain on Feb 7, 2009 2:39 PM CST reply actions

hmm

the more i think about this, more i like it…a reclamation project, get him with Rudy, could be a positive. Of course, this is very little risk…and, if it leads to a murph or byrd trade, could get something of value (pitching/sp/rp wise) there…

Pass?

I see the logic in your assessment. We have young guys who could use the playing time/it’s not our year to compete/he’s pld and washed up, etc.

But, this is a no risk NRI.

I saw part of a feature on Jones the other day on MLB network, and IIC their assessment was that in addition to being out of shape, he was overcompensating in his swing for an injured knee. If he’s in shape, the knee’s healthy and he can return to about .265/.340/.515, why wouldn’t you want a 32 year old Andruw Jones?

by DJCahill on Feb 8, 2009 8:29 AM CST up reply actions

I suppose Rudy might be the key here

Jones may be looking for someone to help him learn how to hit again. Depending on contract language this does not seem like a big deal.

I have nothing to say

by rldwb on Feb 7, 2009 2:59 PM CST reply actions

I think Jones has gone the way of Dale Murphy

I’m a closet Dogers fan, and watched a few of their games last year. He just looked like a guy frustrated with his own fading skills. Of course, I don’t know how hurt he was at start of the year; but the Dodger’s talking heads threw a lot of “this his redemption year” rhetoric out there. I don’t like this move.

i find it a bit strange that this isn't getting bumped to the FP

is that just because adam doesn’t believes it will happen? seems like a big deal. even if it is on a minor league contract, i could see some people wanting to get him onto the field after a good ST (and he is the type of player that could have a big ST).

update from mlbtr per Sullivan
3:32pm: T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com chimes in on the Andruw Jones rumor.

The article suggests we downgrade from “close to agreement” status, as we reported earlier, to “strongly considering,” to quote Sullivan.

"My mother always taught me that if the only thing you have to say is,
‘(Expletive) Dave Samson,’ then don’t say anything at all.
So I’m not going to say anything at all.
Is my mother the greatest or what?"
