OT: The Perfect Push-up
Does anyone own these? If so, do they actually work? Is it that much better than a regular pushup?

My roommate owns them
They’re tougher than regular push-ups. Not sure how much better they are.

meh ... I saw a review on tv
the other day, they’re ok. It wasn’t a great review, very limited.
They usually wind up collecting dust in a corner and not used.
I’d stick with the gym concept Greenie.

He is doing great!
He still cannot drink milk, but he tolerates about 1-2 ounces of apple goop/paste a day, so that’s a good start.
Thanks for asking.

why the name change LAMF?
hows everything going — was it interesting to see torre?

hey triple K!
How ya been Hoss? I changed the name just for the hell of it and also in case I want to go over to some other sites, it keeps the boys that are a little red in the neck away a little better than the other one..ahem…not all the blogs are as genial as the vast majority of the guys/girls on here.
OMG Torre was amazing. My heart is still kinda racing,I don’t know why but he’s kind of like baseball royalty to me. The last place I expected to see him was at my pet store buying dog food. You just figure someone like that has people who do that for him. He was as L A as one can be, tanned, dressed nicely and wearing sunglasses and he had nice things to say about the Rangers so I was thrilled to have run into him. I wanted to ask him to tell me how he really feels about A Rod ..

good point on the name haha – i cant imagine the kind of stuff that would get said about that sn on some of the college football sites out there (great fans, but CF has some absolute morons out there)
torre is a pretty awesome guy – i was wondering what he was getting there haha so now im guessing that you are going to go back for ever (well as long as torre is in LA) and hope to see him again? thats awesome that you saw him! and at a pet store? i mean…exactly like you said – last place you would expect
hows life these days? im sure your enjoying the weather in LA vs the weather here on the E coast (not taht its been that bad here in DC, but this texas boy still isnt used to it lol)

Torre was getting...
dog food. I believe he has a little doggie according to a Dodger fan I was talking to yesterday. I’m going to ask the guy at the counter if he goes in there regularly it’s not far from Beverly Hills so maybe that’s where he shops.
Life has been pretty good thank you for asking. I’m just unpacking stuff and trying to get back into reality here in L A after a few weeks of Hawaii. I didn’t know you were in D.C. I know all too well about that East Coast weather but I’m sure it’s worth it, D.C. is pretty cool right? Are you happy there? It must of been sheer madness during the inauguration.

NYC is by far the best but I lived there for years so I’m kinda biased. Chicago is a lot of fun, the people are really nice there as long as you don’t go in the winter or summer. I nipped over to Hawaii for a few weeks bro. It was fun but got a little boring after the first couple weeks, the ole Island fever began to set in.
I was thinking about you 2 or 3 weeks ago when I heard of the U.S. Airways flight. I said to myself that Captain Sully was about a mile shy of landing on poor Greenies head. Glad to see that wasn’t the case.

by meatbonelefty on Feb 9, 2009 6:03 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I love them
I have owned a pair for about 6mo and they have been great. Allows for a much more normal range of motion for your arms during the pushup and works more muscles than a normal pushup. The main reason I got them was because I have a bad wrist that won’t allow me to do regular ones and with these I do not feel any pressure on the wrists at all. They are tougher than regular pushups but that is better b/c you can do fewer but get the same workout. It comes with a workout plan. If you follow the plan you can really see improvement quickly. You only do a 5min workout every other day.

Please LAMF!!!!!
You know I’m not one of those dudes that’s there the first week of January socializing on the bench press for 15 minutes while some serious bro is waiting to actually get a workout in.
Yeah I completed the month long workout…it was pretty damn amazing. I’m now in the second level of the workout. I’ve seen a lot of gains. I’m at my max weight right now and I feel pretty good about it too. To illustrate, I was out with a lady last weekend and she jokingly pushed me. So naturally I spit some game at her and told her not to do that again cause it hurt me. She said, that couldn’t of hurt… you’re so “rock solid”. Mmm I love it.
As for the perfect pushup I honestly am just curious if anyone has used it and if people like it.

I've also heard good things.
This article talks about it a little. They are supposed to be two-three times harder than normal push-ups, or it will cut your normal reps in half.
I almost bought them a few weeks back, but I decided to stick with my living room floor, for now.
Check the stats, absolutely, but look at the face.

This title reminded me of something I saw back ..
in H.S. called the ultimate situp. You found a freshman or other pansy and asked if they wanted to see if they could do the “Ultimate Situp” so you have 3 other guys show the freshman how its done. One lays down the other ttwo get on each side of the guy laying down and take a rolled up towel and put it over his face while each hold down one side and tell him to try and situp. Of course he cant . Then the freshman tries but this time you have another guy stand right over him bare assed so that his bung hole is right over his face. When the freshman tries to situp the other two guys relase the towel and shamzow you have brown nosing at its best.

I actually do own the perfect push-up...
They’re different than the TV would indicate. The movements aren’t nearly as controlled as they look on TV. They’re a decent workout, but not all that much different from regular pushups. Oddly, after I had used them for a month or so, I went back to doing regular pushups and found those to be harder.
However, the Iron Gym pull-up bar is actually a very good investment. Both of these were Christmas gifts from my brother. I haven’t used the pushups in a while, but I highly recommend that Iron Gym pull-up bar.

concur..
love the Iron Gym pull-up bar.. it looks like it has versatility… as in you can work a lot of different muscle groups with it. As limited as it may be.. it’s a good buy.

and I thought they were awesome. They do a better job of working your chest than just your standard push up. You also feel the burn in your core sense you are having too control your balance.

try starting out with a physio-ball at your gym before investing in this. I could do 72 pushups in a minute and a half, but couldn’t get anymore than 20 in a row on the physioball, and it works your core and glutes. and if you want to focus on the actual pecs more, use dumbbells and alternate lifting with each arm instead of both at the same time. great stability, and the extra control it takes works more of your arm.

My advice: Go into a sporting goods store and try one out first.
I’m an avid gym rat (hour-and-a-half, four times a week) so I’ve used all the contraptions and the PPU is rather meh to me, but I know people who really like it.
The bottom line with any workouty gizmo is to find a place to try it and figure out if it’s something you’re comfortable with and then decide if you’ll use it more (or, for more benefit) than you would basic weights and/or your usual workout for that body part.
If you think you’d be more apt to do a few sets of pushups daily if you had a PPU in your home, then by all means, buy it.
But don’t go into it thinking that you’re gonna do the same ten minutes of pushups 3 times a week you’ve always done, only now you’re gonna see better results cause you’ve got the Navy Seal inspired Perfect Pushup!!!

Well, it's not all lifting. 45 cardio, 45 weights.
I don’t think it’s possible to lift for 1.5 straight 4 days a week without either a) not using your time efficiently and therefor wasting a lot of that time resting or chatting or whatever or b) hitting some serious diminishing returns. (Unless of course you’re on something… or maybe if you’re the Muscley Gay Man. That guy is a beast.)
What kind of plan are you on?
I have to be kind of careful of higher weights cause of my bum-ass shoulder, but I’m always up for something new if you’ve got a good program.

Yeah
at 1.5 hours of lifting you’re either socializing or over-lifting.
I just got off this insane one-month workout that kicked the crap out of me (which obviously a feeling regular liftings like us reminisce about). However, it does require that you be in a gym that isn’t too crowded as you have to cycle in between two exercises at a time (so you have to reserve both of em for 20 minutes at a time). Here is the workout I just finished:
btw, this website, T-Nation is really good. The frontpage has a lot of good articles. I imagine a lot of the readers are ‘roiders or at least amateur or pro bodybuilders. Regardless, it’s a good site with articles on lifting and nutrition from pretty high-quality authors. Much better than say Men’s health or Men’s fitness or whatever.

They don’t hide that fact though. BTW, I bought some of their protein, it’s pretty damn good. A little pricey, but i think the ingredients are very high-quality. Protein + Water in a shaker = money.

Yah, protein is the only "supplement" I take. I usually just buy whatever's on sale at GNC or off Amazon.com.
Most of that stuff just seems so gimicky to me.
I don’t mess around with all that fancy mystery box shit they try to sell me whenever I walk into a GNC.
The sports supplement market is so unregulated it’s not even funny. You’re just as likely to be eating some watered-down rat poison or some ground up Chinese girl-baby as you are to actually get something that’s really gonna help you “Take it to the next level”, imo.

Although there are some basic things you want, like your after workout protein should probably be whey protein as it is broken down by the body much faster than other forms of protein.

anyone have any suggestions for a workout program?
partially goal is to become more fit/healthy and a nice side effect would be to lose some weight, but most of that can/will be/is being accomplished through eating better and running…
what about general things? i have been around weights/weight rooms for a while (baseball/basketbal in HS + some college baseball) so i know the general uses for things but if i have a program i find out i typically do much better than “a little of this and a little of that”
thanks ahead of time…

Sure
Pertaining to weight loss, the first area to start is really with your diet. On a basic level, if you can eliminate or at least reduce your intake of fried foods and soda, that will help a lot. Certainly any form of cardio will also help in regard to weight loss. If you burn more calories than you intake you will lose weight, it really is that simple.
In regard to working out, here’s a workout program that is a good starting workout in my opinion. I used this when I was a freshman in college (so 2003). If you are disciplined and follow it (Mon, Wed, Fri) for a few months you should see noticeable returns. Also, if you haven’t worked out regularly in the past, you should be pretty sore after these workouts. Consequently, you should go to GNC and pick up some whey protein. After working out, go home and mix it with some form of liquid either in a blender or even a mixer (available at GNC). This will help reduce your soreness significantly.

Utah...
it’s ok if you can get over walking by the same person over and over again day after day. Very little diversity (especially compared to the Bay where I grew up) but it’s pretty quite and laid back here so I like that. Plus just about everything goes through the airport here in Salt Lake so I can always get on a plane and head on out when I need to. It’s great if you like the snow and skiing, but I really don’t like either. A lot of us Californians moved out here mostly because the cost of living is a lot cheaper.
LA/NYMF – my knees are ok so far, I’m only 30 and that is a concern of mine down the road though. Hopefully I will be ok. I go running outside sometimes, but most of it is on a treadmill so I’m hoping that will help a lot.

you can lose weight by running and changing your diet. i went from 225 to 175 in just over 3 months by cutting out the fast food, no eating after 8pm, no soda, less beer, and running 1-2 miles a day, whih should take no more than about 20 minutes of your time.
if you can’t run that far, to start run between 4-6 rolling 40’s(jogging build up 20 yards, 40 yd sprint, 20 yd cool down) to build up leg and back strength.

been working on that for a while – rarely drink soda, just never was a huge fan of it
same situation with fried foods, dont eat much of em – usually just cook at home anyway (enjoy it + much healthier/easier to eat healthy when cooking)
thanks for the suggestions on the plan to follow…my complex has an “ok” gym (but is only 75$ a year and at a little over 6 its hard not to take advantage of that)
essentially the “hackers diet” only does so much lol (on a basic level: count calories, exercise helps but not required)

The perfect pushup
is an OK product…
STAY FAR FAR AWAY from the perfect pull up. How it is designed will end up putting extreme pressure on the ligaments in the wrist because of having your body mass pulling downward upon the wrist joint combined with a twisting motion… recipe for disaster.
