Poor, put-upon Tom Hicks

Thank goodness Tom Hicks has taken the time to speak about the ARod/steroids story, and make it all about him:

"I'd rather he had one further apology," Hicks said. "That would be to the owner of the Texas Rangers, who signed him to that contract. Then, I'll decide whether I want to accept his apology."

At the risk of being dressed down by Michael Young, Tom Hicks is a giant douchebag.

if he replaced

‘owner of the texas rangers’ with ‘fans of the texas rangers’ i might think he’s actually doing a stand-up thing and at least putting on a front as some sort of advocate for us. but this statement just seems pathetic, out-of-touch, and egotistical.

Particular the part...

…where he says, “Then I’ll decided if I want to accept his apology.”

Tom Hicks needs to STFU once and for all.

That's the most ridiculous part

“Hicks won’t consider Rodriguez’s apology to Rangers fans until the three-time MVP also offers an apology to him”

Seems like he’s pissed that the Ranger fans got an apology, but he didn’t.

by HankScorpio on Feb 9, 2009 9:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

similar to the Kenny Rogers incident

Hicks was pissed that Rogers apologized to everyone but him specifically.

Wow.

Don’t know what to say about that one. Just when I was starting to commend the guy for how he stood his ground surrounding the Sean Avery situation…he goes and says this.

Then I went back and realized what he was saying about the Avery saga, and how the decision to drop Avery was his immediate reaction “because we can’t stand for that behavior in our locker room”. Right. It was aaaaaallllllll him.

Puh-lease.

Go back to your stupid soccer team. That’s right! I SAID SOCCER!!!!

What he said wasn't all that bad..

It was the situation surrounding it. He completely went against his team’s wishes by talking to the media, he lied about his intentions and there were already things in place to figure out what to do with Avery. He just wasn’t fitting in well with the team and was himself bigger than the team, which is something that doesn’t fly in Dallas. The Stars should have known this would happen, but they gambled that Hull could keep him under control.

I am in high dudgeon

just because we have to have all baseball media coverage dominated by this so often and with so much grandstanding, self-righteous bullshit spewing from baseball writers. Just today this is what I’ve seen/heard that’s put a bee in my bonnet:
- Hicks
- that ass from the NY Daily News calling for the Yankees to release Rodriguez
- numerous douche snorkels saying he shouldn’t be allowed in the HOF
- the 2009 season is already ruined
- this Roberts chick is obviously in this for book sales
- and I’m still just completely discombobulated by that polka dot pregnant nightmare on the grammys broadcast last night. Not related, but, what the hell?

I'm honestly extremely confused about Hicks

A-Rod finished 6th, 2nd and 1st in MVP Votes and hit 156 Home Runs in his 3 seasons in Texas. He played better than anyone over that time period with the exception of Barry Bonds. Umm, why does A-Rod owe Tom Hicks an apology?

Can't say that I blame him for being pissed.

Probably not a real popular assessment on this topic, but I think I’d be a tad pissed if I’d given A-Rod that much money and he lied to me about using enhancements.

I see comments like look at all of the things that A-Rod did for Hicks…. why is he mad? Well, why is nearly everyone else on this board pissed?

by Redcaps on Feb 9, 2009 9:43 PM CST reply actions   2 recs

Agreed.

And then he basically forces his way out of here, used him to get the contract and then gets to play in a precious big market. And then goes on TV and says the PEDs only happened in Texas.

Hicks might not be a good owner, and he may not say the right things. But I’d be pissed at A-Rod too, if I was him.

Well Tom Hicks is peeved

At being lied to. Understandable.

Then he wants an apology for himself as owner of the team that is being castigated, rightly or wrongly, as the representative entity of the ’roids infection. No tunderstandable.

Another person whom I know, albeit not “that” well, Kenny Rogers, made apologies to everybody but not specifically to Hicks. He was shed like a leaky wet suit thereafter. He could have contributed a couple more years for the Rangers, and dammit, wanted to!

What Tom Hicks doesn’t blow off or buy off, he runs off. I’m weary of his grand opera. I hope Nolan Ryan can ameliorate all back and forth between ownership and the baseball side of the organization. I really, really hope so.

You know what would be nice, Adam?

Open up a post, and actually go on the record with your thoughts about Alex Rodriguez doing PEDs as a Ranger.

Your fawning over this player, this precious, precious, ongoing grudge you’ve had over his trade are so tedious, Adam. Years later, it still winds up on this ostensibly stat-driven message board.

Fault the guy who guaranteed Alex Rodriguez record-surpassing paychecks for having a reaction to his drug use, but at least put your own reaction in plain words first.

I’ll tell you this: the fact Tom Hicks is pissed is ipso facto. Alex Rodriguez lied to him. Why don’t you mention your take on that, too?

Go Strangers.

by hightowersmith on Feb 10, 2009 9:16 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Do we know that Tom Hicks

actually asked ARod if he was on steroids?

I don’t really fault the players at all for doing whatever they could to keep up with the competition because players were not being tested.

If the posted speed limit on a highway was 60 mph but you could travel as fast as you could on said highway without worrying about being caught and were being financially encouraged to go faster, would you observe the speed limit?

If MLB really, really wanted drugs out of baseball, they’d give the players blood tests and suspensions would be permanent.

They don’t tolerate gambling so why should they tolerate PEDs?

Fair enough but Hicks is going to

squawk about ARod when his organization is viewed by many as Ground Zero for steroid use?

Ruben Sierra was one of the poster children of steroid use for that era and Hicks brought him back twice – in 2000 and then again in 2003.

Raffy, Pudge, Juando, Rocker, Velarde, Caminiti, Almanzar and later Sosa(the list probably doesn’t end there and I suspect current Rangers as well)…

Owners, GMs, managers, trainers were all very complicit in letting this culture thrive because MLB was making a boatload of bank from the way the game was being played.

I don’t really fault the players at all for doing whatever they could to keep up with the competition because players were not being tested.

but the year he failed was the year that MLB would only start permenent testing if 10% of the MLBPA tested positive. all these players had to do was for less than 10% of them to do steriods 1 season and the problem goes away forever…

and AROD TEST POSITIVE?

you have to be the biggest moron on the face of the earth to screw that up, 104 were.

Your fawning over this player, this precious, precious, ongoing grudge you’ve had over his trade are so tedious, Adam.

Huh?

Dear Tom,

you got a whole locker room of players from the mid 90s who were juicing.

Deal with it.

Get off my lawn.

Somebody wrote something in LSB about

the connection of Baltimore / Texas players from the 90’s & early 00’s and said the link was Johnny Oates.

I think the big link was Doug Melvin.

While I’m thinking about it, Eric Gagne…another poster child for steroid use was a Ranger in 2007.

You can look at every team...

and see connections. You don’t think there are any connections in the Bay form the A’s and Giants?

How about with the Yankees, no connections there?

Every team had multiple players on PED’s. The connection is MLB players in general.

And we are supposed to believe Hicks didn't know ??

The Mitchell Report has a section describing how Juan Gonzalez, when he payed in Cleveland, was essentially caught crossing into Toronto with a bag of PED’s, which “belonged” to his personal trainer. And the GM of the Indians at that time was John Hart. The following year, Hicks hired Hart, who signed Juan Gon. Canseco, Juan Gon, Palmeiro, probably Pudge, A Rod, sure Tom, you deserve a long apology.
