Per Google search
  1. Healing times are usually 2 to 10 days for a mild strain, 10 days to 6 weeks for a moderate strain, or 6 to 10 weeks for a severe strain. Repeated injuries may take longer to heal and are more prone to complications.

Hamilton feels fine:
Josh Hamilton was bouncing on his feet in the clubhouse Sunday, saying his left Achilles feels fine. Hamilton said it doesn’t hurt, but it is a little tight. He said he still may play Monday against Cleveland. Hamilton did not hurt the Achilles legging out his triple. He tweaked it getting a lead off third base after the at-bat.

Neither did I

I actually liked our acquisition of Broussard when it went down, seeing as how lefties like him tend to thrive at the ballpark. Didn’t happen though, he forgot how to hit and couldn’t play first base. Shelton’s performance was marginally better offensively, and almost decent defensively, but he still sucked.

it is hard to tell

because of all the minor leaguers in the boxscores, but as of right now, our pitching hardly seems to be any better.

I am getting a little nervous about this year. I hope people around here realize that unless this team shows real improvement on the mound this season, it won’t just be Wash who gets fired, but JD as well, and god only knows what the next GM will do to not only our farm, but our player development system as a whole. That is one of many reasons I wish the team had found room in their budget for a guy like Cruz. But like I said, maybe, when a few of these guys are sent to minor league camp, these boxscores won’t look so terrible. As of right now, though, we are allowing about a run per inning.

Early Spring Training Games

I know all the pitchers are on pitch counts early in spring training. My question is, in these early games, are the pitchers throwing with 100% effort for the innings that they are in?

by NorCalRangersFan on Mar 1, 2009 5:25 PM CST up reply actions

I think JD is safe this year

If the team gets off to another slow start I think its Washingtons head no questions asked. But JD is and should be safe this year. I think the only way hes gone after this year is if almost every single prospect takes steps backwards in their development which I think is highly unlikely. But if Holland progresses as expected and makes it to Arlington this year, and Feliz continues to progress with his secondary stuff, Borbon shows continued improvement in CF and makes the jump sometime this year, and Andrus gets up here by June and locks himself into the SS position long term then Daniels will be very very safe.

by bigsteve on Mar 1, 2009 6:46 PM CST up reply actions

not spring training

just thinking about his quick ascent so far. Also, I don’t think they want him to come up and struggle mightily. I think they would rather leave him in AAA for the rest of the year if it came to that just so there’s a chance he would have more seasoning.

Then again, I don’t know what the Rangers are thinking in terms of bringing up a prospect pitcher seeing as how they haven’t done it in a long time (at least done it well).

"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."

by ab03 on Mar 1, 2009 7:41 PM CST up reply actions

i don't think he's safe at all

We prospect nerds can look at the farm system and his limited budget and come up with a host of reasons he should be kept on, and a logical employer would probably think the same, but Tom Hicks has proven time and again he is a complete idiot, and JD really needs his trade acquisitions (like Salty, Harrison, Murphy and even Gabbard) to step up this year so those trades are clear “wins” at the major league level.

by clark on Mar 1, 2009 6:38 PM CST up reply actions

I think it is Ryan's call

If Ryan says fire Daniels, Daniels is gone. If Ryan says he stays, he stays. I suspect that’s been the case since Ryan was hired.

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 1, 2009 6:41 PM CST up reply actions

Agree

But to go to clarks response if Salty produces at the catcher position along with Teagarden, Davis crushes like he did last year, Murphy is a very productive platoon in LF, Harrison progresses on last year and stays healthy, Borbon comes up around August to lock down CF, Feliz and Holland make late season appearances, and Elvis comes up around June or so then that is 8 young players brought in by Daniels who are pieces to the long term future. Add in Hamilton and Cruz (both Daniels acquisitions) who should be everyday players and McCarthy if healthy and thats pretty impressive. I don’t see Daniels job being dependant on the record whereas Washingtons probably is.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Mar 1, 2009 6:50 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

but given what Ryan has been saying all along, I don’t see how he can justify firing Daniels at this point – right on the heels of the minor league system being lauded by so many. Maybe Ryan thinks Daniels should have made some moves but Daniels hasn’t done anything that was considered bad in a long time. Would just be odd timing to fire Daniels now.

I especially don’t see Ryan firing Daniels if those reports that Ryan wanted Washington to stay are true

"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."

by ab03 on Mar 1, 2009 7:43 PM CST up reply actions

no one is saying

JD would be fired tomorrow, or even at the end of spring training, but if the team is out of contention by the ASB, and Wash was fired back on Memorial Day, then heads will probably keep rolling. As Adam stated above, it will probably be Nolan’s call, and we know there are some former GMs out there who are Nolan cronies and who are very much available.

by clark on Mar 1, 2009 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

why

what could possibly happen in between memorial day and the ASB? we probably wont’ know anything about our prospects. at most we’ll find otu that padilla and millwood aren’t ptiching all that great in their contract year – which won’t really matter since they won’t be part of the future anyway.

i don’t think irrational heads will prevail for no real reason. not to mention, the guys in management we have are cheap

"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."

by ab03 on Mar 1, 2009 9:24 PM CST up reply actions

are you serious?

do you really think JD will get a free pass this year because of his number one farm ranking? i can foresee a very realistic scenario playing out over the next four months that would lead to his getting fired. if the major league pitching falters (which may or may not happen) and the record is not at or around .500 (which is mostly dependent on the pitching) and ticket sales continue to decline (which will almost certainly happen) then the team will at least be tempted to shake up its leadership. It is that simple. To save his job, it will take more than Hamilton having another great year, Cruz solidifying his starting position and a guy like Murphy playing well. It will take the pitchers that JD brought in stepping up and showing improvement. The biggest knock on JD to date is his (and his staff’s) inability to find and develop major league pitching. If that does not show market improvement this year, he will probably get fired. How can you argue with that?

by clark on Mar 1, 2009 9:32 PM CST up reply actions

yeah

no, completely wrong. sorry.

if the farm fails, then JD is in trouble. The people on the farm won’t fail before the ASB. They won’t be brought up before the ASB. if you are talking about harrison and bmac, we still won’t have definitive answers on either of them by the asb – and at this point, they aren’t so central to the future that their failure is disastrous. this is the year where a lot of young players will get playing time. I can’t imagine anybody in the FO pinning high expectations to the the first half of the year. It would just be stupid and irrational if they do.

Now, RW’s job is definitely in trouble if they come out markedly flat – like last year where the consensus was they were playing below their level (although I wonder how much of that is actually true – what if we had just replaced JJ with a replacement level guy?).

But if the question is, “does JD have a free pass the first part of the year?” Sorry, I think the answer is yes. In fact, I don’t see JD leaving unless he makes or turns down another significant trade or signing (which might happen the second part of the year). I also just don’t see JD butting heads with Nolan and I don’t see what demand Nolan could make that JD wouldn’t oblige. They seem to be on the same page – play youngsters, etc.

"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."

by ab03 on Mar 1, 2009 9:40 PM CST up reply actions

well

maybe you’re right. they do seem to be on the same page. and to be clear, i hope this is all moot and the rangers go out and play well (obviously).

but i do disagree with your assertion that we won’t have a strong feel on our young starters by the ASB. That is over 90 games in, correct? by then, these guys will have 15-18 starts. And I disagree that they are not central to the future of our team. Padilla will be gone next year, and Millwood is either gone or has one more year. We cannot pin all of our hopes on Feliz and Holland. We will need at least two of the rest of our guys to step up if we want to field a competitive rotation next year. And honestly, if we aren’t able to develop some of this first crop of young guys into contributors, I will have a lot less confidence in our ability to polish the raw abilities of Holland and Feliz. We need to see that the work of Maddux and the pitching coordinators on the farm know how to help our kids get from ’06 Danks to ’08 Danks (to use one example).

by clark on Mar 1, 2009 10:19 PM CST up reply actions

improvement on the mound

as I was saying all offseason, where is the improvement going to come from this season? Personally, I’m not real optimistic that any of our starting 5 will be any better than they were last year. I think we have to hope that Feliz, Holland, and at least 1-2 of these bullpen guys come quickly and learn fast.

Doctor please. Some more of these.

by ab03 on Mar 1, 2009 6:23 PM CST up reply actions

well, i was

and i still am. i am not calling the season a lost cause or anything. but our pitching staff has to have a good year for the reasons listed above, and so far, many of the guys this team is depending on to show improvement over last year (either incentivized by a new contract or simply by more experience) have not shown much. If Feldman and Harrison go out in their next start and look much sharper, and if McCarthy can turn his slider into a pitch that rivals his old curve in effectiveness, it would go a long way in assuaging my concerns.
