Today's lineup up

The S-T blog has today's lineup up...

Once again, the likely starters (except Nelson Cruz, who is back in camp today but not in the lineup)...

Catalanotto was a little more upbeat about his experience with Italy than Cruz was with the Dominican Republic.

Well, duh. Italy won a game, something no one thought they would do. The Domincan was epically pathetic. At least Cruz had a few good plays during the series. I don’t think he did anything to be embarrassed about, other than failing to score runs off of a low-A quality pitching staff from Holland…

was poking aroudn fatwallet

and found this deal for rangers 2009 mini plans with this comment at the bottom

Nice deal OP. Too bad its so hard being a Rangers fan. Every year we hope to finally have some decent pitching in Arlington to go with the hitting. As much as I love having Josh Hamilton, it would have been nice to have a front 4 rotation of Chris Young, John Danks, Edinson Volquez, and Armando Galarraga.

just glanced at it and the username was “phatkid” – i thought it was philkid3 and about flipped my shit — thought he was really JW in disguise lol

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

Eh

Does anyone know whether today’s game will actually be webcast for free on the Rangers web site?

Per the Rangers release: “The eight free webcasts on texasrangers.com Gameday Audio begin on Thursday, March 10, when the Rangers host San Francisco at Surprise Stadium at 2:05 p.m. CT.”

There’s a lot of incorrect info in that statement. The broadcast wasn’t free, March 10th was Tuesday not today and the game was at 3pm not 2, but that’s straight out of the Official Release.

Just wondering if any one knew for sure how the “free” webcasts are supposed to work?

I don't know what to make of JPark's Smoak answer

here

I guess it assumes an injury but if he really is that good, are you looking to have Davis play a different position already?

Mid-season trade.

Some team, some where will need a left-handed bat.

i don't like the thinking

that he can be this year’s Matt LaPorte. He is simply too valuable, in my opinion, to trade for 4 months of any human being because a) he is a far more complete player than LaPorte and b) there is no realistic scenario that even the most rose-colored glasses, coolaid drinking Rangesr fan in the world can dream up in which this team is legitimately one player away from winning a championship this year.

If Smoak gets traded, it needs to be for a young, top of the rotation pitcher who we can control for many years on the cheap.

sometimes I forget that Hank is on the team

so here’s our glut of 1b/DH:

Hank

Max
Smoak

You are saying, if they trade Hank, that Davis is the DH and Smoak plays 1st? Wither Max?

by octoberty on Mar 12, 2009 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

if your saying in general

i think there is a small chance of him being here in 2 years unless he plays 3b again

this year:
Hank – MLB
Davis – MLB
Max – AAA
Smoak – AA? AAA?

i see no problems there (this year) – maybe they move blalock at some point in the year and you bring max up as your most of the time DH, part time catcher?

that said, going into next year you should have max/blalock/davis all at the ML level…and going into 2011 you have all 4

now that said, you almost HAVE to move davis off of 1b (is he really going to be THAT bad at 3b or in the OF? worse than dunn bad?) because its aweful hard to justify making a player that young be a full time DH imho

then you have maxram/teagarden/salty at C going into next year – i think there is about a 1% chance of them keeping all of them all year long, i think its a forlorn conclusion that the rangers trade one of those guys (to florida for SP? i love josh johnson!)

teams with a long term hole at catcher:
TOR
KC
Angels (out of the equasion imho)
NYY (dont tell me montero is going to stick at C, hes not)
CWS (flowers=not a ML catcher imho)
florida (unless you are sold on john baker)
cincy
boston
NYM
DET
philly
milwaukee (depends on what you think of salome)
san diego

theres a lot of value to me in the glut of guys we have at 1B/DH/C – and not that you HAVE to make a move, but i think its gonna become problamatic going into next year with that same glut of guys – thats 3 catchers, 3 1B plus whatever other guys that do well in th enext 2 years…

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

ok

i didn’t read all of that but just enough to say that i was only talking about this year.

this year, smoak can only come up if you are jumping him in the pecking order

"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."

by ab03 on Mar 12, 2009 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Catchers

Toronto has JP Arencibia, rated a 5 star today by Golstein.
The Angels have Mike Napoli through 2012. Hank Conger, with questionable defense coming up soon.
Florida has Baker for the short-run, Kyle Skipworth for the long-run.
Detroit has Laird for the short-run, Alex Avila for the long-run.
Philly has a stack of Carlos Ruiz, then Lou Marson, then Travis D’Arnaud.
Milwaukee has Salome, as you mentioned, and then Jon Lucroy, who it underrated by most.
San Diego is debuting Nick Hundley this year.

On top of that, some team will get Austin Maddox, Max Stassi or Luke Bailey, prep catchers, in the draft, and the college prospects are Josh Phegley, Robert Stock, and Ryan Ortiz. So there’s talent out there.

Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year

by RangerMad on Mar 12, 2009 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I know Todd doesn't like hearing this

but I think the Rangers are hoping Max continues to put up monster numbers in AAA this year so they can trade him. I think he is the guy who fits our long term plans the least.

that said, he will have a ton of value (esp if he continues to develop as a C). He and one of our young pitchers could be enough to land Grienke by themselves by this deadline, especially if this year goes as poorly for cash strapped clubs as I expect it to (thereby making young, controllable prospects even more valuable than before).

by clark on Mar 12, 2009 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Greinke

They’re not going to trade him at this deadline unless they’re getting a Teixeira-like return. KC successfully signed him to an affordable extension, so they’re not going to let him go unless they get a franchise-type prospect.

by Andy Seiler on Mar 12, 2009 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I won't be heart broken if he is traded

if we get a front line pitcher back.

I think Max as a DH would put up comparable numbers as Smoak or Davis, but those latter two probably have a lot more trade value, so I’d rather one of them be moved and get the best pitching return. Anyways, if the end result is a TORG, I’ll be happy. OTOH, if we trade Max for some fringe ML starter then watch Max put up several years of 900+ OPS, then I will be pissed.

Doctor please. Some more of these.

by tricer on Mar 12, 2009 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions

one more thing

you say that Max is the guy who fits our long term plans the least, and I don’t understand that. We need a 1b (either Davis or Smoak) and a DH (Max). Why would Max be a less viable option for DH. Seems to me he is the best fit for DH because with either of the other 2, you would be wasting some defensive value with them at DH.

Doctor please. Some more of these.

From Evan Grant:
No radar gun visible in stadium. He had swings and misses on some good offspeed stuff and seemed to really command the outside lower corner of the plate against right-handed hitters.

When I go down to the clubhouse, I’ll see if anybody there has radar readings. I would not bet on anything above 91-92 mph. He’s never going to have overpowering stuff. Not below average either, but not overpowering. Think is, he looked like a pitcher today
