First round of cuts out
Evan Grant runs down the first group of cuts, and the three guys who are particularly of note are Guillermo Moscoso, Thomas Diamond, and Kason Gabbard, all of whom came to camp with a chance to make the bullpen.
Moscoso, from the reports this morning, is going to be working out of the bullpen here on out, and I suspect the Rangers want to get him more acclimated to that role. And as I mentioned earlier this spring, if you want to try to i.d. someone who could be this year's version of the 2004 Frankie Francisco, Moscoso is the lead candidate.
Gabbard is having injury issues, again, and Diamond has been (according to Grant) a disappointment this spring, so they are out earlier than would have been guessed a month ago.

It's interesting that Grant said that about Diamond
All I’ve heard is look out for Diamond, he’s going to surprise you. I was starting to hope that he really was going to surprise me.

Well, I respect his opinion on him (as well as Mike’s), but I wouldn’t have even said anything (or questioned my opinion at all) if Jon Daniels hadn’t said the same sort of thing himself a couple of times during ST, watch out for him he’s healthy, he’s better than his numbers looked, etc. When I think about a few occasions where he’s said that sort of thing, he’s been pretty prophetic. I think back to when he touted Adrian Gonzalez and Edinson Volquez in ST 2005, for example.

including mike maddux’s, “thatta boy tommy diamond!” and his last intrasquad game…
hopefully TD get’s his act together quickly in AAA…i want to see him in the Bigs soon and not because of an injury but because he’s B-A-C-K. Like, 2005 Bakersfield back…

Diamond
FWIW- and this has nothing to do with his level of ability- he’s a really easy guy to root for, and I suspect that has a lot to do with those who are hoping that he gets it this year and finally makes it to the bigs. If you’ve met Diamond, it’s very, very hard not to be a fan.

I thought Moscoso did not like the idea of Moscoso in the bullpen. I wonder how he will react?
by Excel Hearts Choi on Mar 15, 2009 7:43 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Don’t know, but that was Detroit’s plan for him before they dealt him here. Of course they were going to have him start ST with the idea that he’d compete for a big league pen spot, and I don’t really get the feeling that the Rangers sincerely did that.

I asked him.
Moscoso: “The Rangers asked me what I wanted to do. I said I don’t care. I just want to help win games. I just want to do my job.”

Hey
Since you are here…
What do you think of Mendoza’s two-seamer?
by Adam J. Morris on Mar 15, 2009 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's a good pitch
Better command makes it a great pitch. Unfortunately, it’s his only above-average offering.
by jparks77 on Mar 15, 2009 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Are you saying that you think Mendoza’s sinker is an above average ML pitch on a consistent basis?
ML hitters sure smack the shit out of it when it flattens out, and that is fairly regular, much more regular than the better version that looks above average. I’d say it flashes above average, but he has trouble throwing it for strikes, and when he’s behind in the count and has to throw a strike, ML hitters tee off like it’s BP.
Doctor please. Some more of these.

More Moscoso
He also told me that Padilla has been a big help to him in camp. I should have a few brief interviews with Moscoso, Diamond, Golson, and Smoak ready to go for tomorrow.

not looking too good, I was hoping for a better spring. I’ve read all the arguments from his supporters and I’ve been hopeful, but he still looks like a guy whose stuff/control just isn’t cutting it. I’d love to be wrong.

It was amazing to see
all the assumptive writing on here regarding him being in the pen this year. Never have so many opinions been based on blind faith(well, I mean, regarding baseball, of course), with no grounding in reality. This guy has been a complete disaster for years, in just about every way imaginable. Someone being bullish on Diamond is the equivalent of Cramer recommending “buy now” regarding Lehman Brothers. I would highly recommend selling any and all Diamond stock one might still be holding….

luvs me some k-rates
Wild pitchers often have high K rates in the lower minors. Lets see those high K rates against hitters who actually know what a strike zone is.

DVD
i think this highlights why it’s difficult if not impossible for me to get excited about minor league pitchers/prospects in this organization. none of the three contributed anything whatsoever to this team at the major league level and until texas can SUCCESSFULLY develop talent (specifically pitching), my assumption is that they can’t. a lot of people here are adamant that texas will be good in 2010 or 2011 based on players in the system, but the contributions of DVD highlight a glaring problem with this franchise.

You are right
Screw Feliz, Holland, Main, Perez, etc. They are going to suck.
by Adam J. Morris on Mar 16, 2009 9:59 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
what?
where did i say that any of those pitchers you listed will suck?
fwiw – neither danks nor volquez would be pitchers that i would list under the suck category.
i said that i cannot get excited about prospects until the team can successfully convert prospects to major league talent (in arlington).
to this point the club has not done this. i said that the three mentioned/referenced were an excellent example of an inadequacy with this club. the rangers cannot develop pitchers. volquez went from junk to very much above average a couple of months after he left. danks a year after he left. galarraga a couple of days after he left. does that not seem peculiar to you?
what has been done to right this wrong? the new pitching coach? is there some new system in place that is markedly different than the system in place when these three passed through?
or are you just assuming that the law of averages will result in a prospect eventually becoming great in arlington solely b/c to date none have?
yeah, that’s something to get excited about…

i'm reading your post again...
i still don’t get it.
what i said was not really anything to do with the players and everything to do with the organization.
you misconnected somewhere.
if you’re going to screw something/someone, screw the faulty system that cannot develop talent.

This is what jumped out at me. You seem to be saying that your assumption is the Rangers won’t be able to successfully develop the pitchers they currently have in the system.

Galarragga – lucky
Volquez – NL
Young – Petco
Danks – wouldn’t be all that without his cutter
I have heard these qualifiers many times from members of this community.
I don’t think it’s that shocking why there are Ranger fans who are skeptical about Feliz, Holland, Main and Perez
by oc on Mar 16, 2009 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Skepticism
Be skeptical of those guys, but Galarraga, Volquez, Young, and Danks were never rated and thought of as highly as Feliz and Holland are right now and Perez and Main look to be right there with Feliz and Holland in being rated higher than those guys ever were. That’s the problem with people using those guys as examples of why this wave of pitching talent will fail.

This is ridiculous
I can understand pessimism. I have a certain pessimism about the club having pitchers pan out. But to just arbitrarily ignore the fact that they have better talent than they’ve ever had just as another way to avoid getting your hopes up is absolutely ridiculous.

you are confusing my frustrations with losing...
with my frustrations re: wasting talent through an inability to develop that talent effectively.
and yes, wasting talent (failing to develop talent) makes me jaded.
it doesn’t make me very happy to see guys crap out (which some inevitably do everywhere just more here), and it makes me even more unhappier to see them pitching extremely well somewhere else.
neither danks nor volquez were good here (their best pitching has been elsewhere). why?
by sam in so cal on Mar 16, 2009 5:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Duh
Danks hadn’t reached the majors yet when he was here, of course he hadn’t done his best pitching yet. Adding the cutter in Chicago seems to have helped him, but he was very highly regarded when he was here, too. They didn’t screw him up in any way. Volquez was rushed when he was here, but seem to have figured it out in 2007 when they sent him back down.
They were able to use Volquez’ encouraging DEVELOPMENT to acquire Hamilton. Trading is one of the things you have prospects for. Both Danks and Volquez WERE good while they were here, that’s why they were coveted by other clubs.

Rangers GM Jon Daniels told Gammons his team bid $7MM for Junichi Tazawa, but the Red Sox signed him for $3MM due to their presence in Japan.

we could field a decent team
with players we had the highest bid for but still failed to sign because of the poor public perception of this organization.
JD is working diligently to change that, and as with all sports promotion, winning is the best medicine.
by clark on Mar 16, 2009 9:40 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That makes the Dice-K bid suck more
Not that I’m blaming JD or Hicks and I really am completely fine with not having Matsuzaka’s overrated self here in Texas for a 100 million dollar investment, BUT, the Red Sox are right there with the Mariners now in being the big thing in Japan and when you mix in their recent WS trophies and playoff runs, its tough to sign any Japanese player if the Red Sox are interested in them too.
