Let's "get down" - O/U set at 74 1/2
As a follow up to this thread (http://www.lonestarball.com/2009/2/11/756042/wednesday-a-m-stuff) I wanted to provide the LS Ballers with an update.
One of the most recognized gambling websites, Bodog, has the Rangers listed at 74.5 for 2009 wins.
http://sports.bodoglife.com/sports-betting/baseball-futures.jsp
Obviously the significance is that this line is available for public wagering through the website as opposed to previous O/U discussions that were more "hypothetical" in nature. This is an actual line and is the best barometer of sentiment that I can find. The line is created to attract half of the money to one side and half to the other side, and it is adjusted as wagers are placed.
I searched the terms "over under" before posting, so I hope that this does not rehash an existing thread.

a little surprised, but probably right
this makes TEX the third worst team in terms of expected record in the AL ahead of SEA (72’) and BAL (71’). i will again make the argument that if BAL and TEX switched divisions, TEX would be a few games worse than BAL (playing NYY/TB/BOS instead of OAK/SEA/LAA).

Not a bad number.
The only reason for optimism this year is the overall shittiness of our division.

The number seems fair
but I think I’d have to take the over if I were betting. A couple of games below that and you’re one of the worst teams in baseball. They could regress a few games from last year and still be over. They could be 5.5 over and still be under .500.

Over
by a little. Prognosis uncertain, I still don’t think the 25 is what it will be later in the season (suspect a deal for pitching for “now” but no clue what it will be).

Yep. However
There may be more than rehab watching with Sheets. Just a hunch.

somehow much better than that 72 O/U line
really wish I had taken the over on that.

I'd take the over
I’m thinking 80-81 wins, myself.

You know
…a part of me is going to be miserable this year. There is a good chance that this will be the most positive, exciting season in a decade for the organization as a whole, but since the team isn’t going to win 90 games I get the feeling that if I want to read blogs like this (and obviously I’m going to), I’m going to get to read this incessant whining about the past. It’s such an inappropriate, stupid time for negativity, ugh.

I can agree with this.
I don’t think we’re much better or worse than a 75 win team, and yet I’m excited about the year. Not just because of upside, but just because I think we could be playing meaningful games later than we have in years with a bright future.
But yeah, I don’t think in the throws of a season 5-10 games below .500 at any point you’ll get many comments with this silver-lining look.

Ugh, that's a vicious line.
As it’s right where my somewhat-scientific expectations lie. If that drops much, I’ll take the over, though.
If it goes up much. . . I can’t bring myself to bet against the Rangers.
