Carlos Lee - Compensatory Picks
Who did the Rangers pick with the picks they got for Carlos Lee? I think Blake Beavan was one of them?
Probably deserves a little more pub. If in fact we did pick Blake Beavan + someone else with the comp pick. Add that to Nelson Cruz and I would say Jon Daniels got a great return on Mench, Nix and Coco. Great example of a trade that was trying to help them win now (Lee) and win later (Cruz + 2 picks).
Thanks
UPDATE*** Looks like the 2 comp picks were turned into Beavan and Bourbon. So to summarize JD trades:
To Brewers:
Kevin Mench (Bottom of the roster player), Laynce Nix (Minor Leagues) & Coco Cordero (Tier 2 Closer)
Rangers Got:
Nelson Cruz (2009 clean up hitter), Blake Beavan & Julio Bourbon + 3 months of Carlos Lee.
JD hasn't gotten enough credit for this one...

Yeah
Beavan and Borbon. Not as good as Neil Ramirez + Michael Main for GMJ, but still pretty good.

definitely
more than the Astros got for Lidge. This is a trade that will always be underrated because so few will connect Beavan and Borbon to it.
But we’ll know.

But, but...
you have to judge trades the day they are done. You can’t take into account what players the Rangers got in those deals and how they play in the future. Johnny Donuts sucks and has never made any good trades.

I would also add to that
that we only traded 3 months of Coco since he had a team option for the following season (that the Rangers probably weren’t too interested in picking up).
Its also funny that we brought Kevin Mench back here on an NRI. People (Josey) were (was) bitching about losing Nix, Mench, and Coco, but in reality, this team could have easily brought all 3 back within the past couple of years if they were really interested in them and weren’t terrible players. I’ll take Beavan, Borbon, and Cruz even without Carlos Lee in that deal.

Cat
Remember too that the Rangers gave up the 16th pick in the first round by signing Frank Catalanotto.

At least it doesn’t look like the Blue Jays can brag about getting that pick.

yeah, but...
for what it cost us to sign cat and his returns, we could have drafted porcello and signed him and still come out on the good end financially.
that says a lot.

So you think adding another
draft pick to pay a signing bonus was going to get us Porcello?

No.
But his point was that we gave up a pick that could’ve been used to select Porcello and spent money on a useless player while giving up that pick that was more than enough to sign Porcello.
So, yah.
“Could”.
I got the feeling we were never that into Porcello as a team so I don’t think it would’ve happened anyway.
We more likely would’ve gotten a guy like Ahrens or Smoker or Savery or Withrow or Kozma or someone else who looks rather busty at this point and all this would be a moo point.

The thing I have never understood is tha Cat hate...
Yes he has made a significant downturn at this point, but look at his at the time the contract was signed. He had OPSed over .800 7 of the prior 8 years, signed a deal that was pretty much market value and was brought in because the team and everyone else thought Derosa’s demands where well out of place. He could play some INF and help a very weak OF.
The problem is that in 2 years he went from being a productive cog with a fairly high LD% and BABIP to a guy that is normalized that doesn’t have that extra push on his BA to push OBP to push his OPS.
I have no problem with Cat, and recognize that he will be gone either during or after this season.
And do not thin that Cat was the reason the team did not pursue Porcello. I agree with JBImaknee, he was not a legit option unless he fell to the supplemental to early 2nd or 3rd for Texas.

First, let me just say that I didn't think the Cat signing was that bad
I liked the move at the time based on the team’s needs and what the team was expecting to do. Obviously that didn’t work out for reasons including this team’s record and Cat’s sharp drop off, but I hate seeing people keep bitching about losing one draft pick in a draft where we loaded up. Yeah, things could have been even better, but you can say that about everything. There’s enough horse beating going on. Do we really need to keep bitching about a time when things went great for the Rangers?
As for the Porcello pick, the Rangers had already spent about $5.5 million on that 1st round of players. If they drafted and signed Porcello, they would have committed nearly 13 million dollars to that 1st round. That’s a shit-load of money to dedicate to 1 round in 1 draft. Add in a second 40 man roster spot to a player you don’t expect to contribute until 2+ offseasons later and I don’t see how the Rangers could make that decision at the time. Yeah, Cat’s contract ended up being mostly wasted money, but I don’t think there is a direct correlation between Cat’s multi-year contract and the Rangers budget at the draft. I just can’t picture JD telling Hicks that since they just didn’t sign a Major League player to a 3 year contract, that they can now afford to give a high school draft pick whatever he wants.
Plus, like you said, I don’t think the Rangers were that dead set on drafting Porcello. I’m sure they liked his talent, but my guess is that they didn’t want to be giving a Major League contract to a HS pitcher and it was also no guarantee he would even sign at the time. There was the very good possibility at the time that Porcello would have just gone to college so he could end up going in the top 3 of the draft when he could command whatever he wanted.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Simultaneously imagining the face of Porcello and the face of Cat (especially with stache) brings tears to my eyes.

UGHHHHHHHH
The Rangers were never going to pick Porcello. Having picks 1 through 40 in that draft wouldn’t have made Texas pick Porcello. IT WASN’T GOING TO HAPPEN.
Will people stop saying “the Rangers could have taken Porcello”! His demands were unreasonable for a high school pitcher. He has shown since then that he was probably worth his demands, but that’s not the point. The Rangers did the smart thing by taking two top high school pitchers in Main and Beavan who did not require major league contracts and ridiculous money. Let it go.

Speaking of HS players getting ML contracts
I wonder if C Bryce Harper will get one in 2011? Jim Callis said in the Ask BA segment he would rank Harper as the 4th overall prospect in baseball after Strasburg at number three. Harper is 16 years old. Keith Law stated he would take Harper over Strasburg.
J. P (Toronto): Where would Bryce Harper go if he was eligible for next year’s draft?
SportsNation Keith Law: (1:34 PM ET ) #1 overall.
Ryan (DC): Really… Bryce Harper would be drafted over Strasburg?
SportsNation Keith Law: (1:36 PM ET )I’m saying I would take him over Strasburg. 16-year-old catcher with ++ arm, polished bat, and power? His skill set and polish are a more scarce package than a potential #1 starter.

Callis also said that
Harper is a more hyped and anticipated prospect than guys like ARod and Upton. Watching that video, he looks like he was just engineered to play baseball. Also, can’t believe he’s just 16.

Coco
People look at how he did once in Milwaukee and figure we gave up too much but that first half of the season here he was horrible. In fact you could easily say if he pitched like he did in Milwaukee when he was here that Ranger team would have been right in the playoff hunt.
