Today's lineup
Blalock is sitting because of the tight quad, but apparently would be in the lineup if it were a regular season game.

Can't believe
a players coach like Wash implementing something like this. Did this decree come from Mt. 2head where snow monkeys abound for the presidents pleasure?
Was that an attempt at being
clever? If so, you failed terribly.

According to Jeff Wilson
Scott Feldman will start, Doug Mathis will throw at least two innings, and Jennings, Josh Rupe and Derrick Turnbow will pitch an inning somewhere along the way.

Althought not an exciting bunch
these are some of the pitchers about whose performance I’m most concerned.
by NorCalRangersFan on Mar 17, 2009 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions
Feldman then blechhhh
I think I’m known as something of a debbie downer on this board, but I’m fairly optimistic on Feldman. I’ve seen him have some plus stuff – both his fastballs really move, and considering the history, I think there is some development left.
As for the rest of today’s scheduled throwers….well, I look forward to the day those type guys can’t make our staff.
Doctor please. Some more of these.

oc is going to hit you in the head with his bong for that!
Keith Law on Greg Golson, "He's similiar to Cameron and Hunter in that all three are black."
Agreed
But to have any real success this year, some or all of those guys are going to have to come through. And that’s why I’m interested in seeing them do well now.
by NorCalRangersFan on Mar 17, 2009 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions
well
I could really care less about Mathis, but one of Eyre, Turnbow, or Donnelly is going to have to be on this staff, so one of them needs to step up. Turnbow either needs to start showing something soon, because he is probably in last place at the moment.
As for Rupe, I still don’t know if he has another option. I have read two different answers from equally credible sources. If he does, I think his chance of making the team is slim, but if he doesn’t, then he has got to step up as well.
This is a game where we could easily see more BBs than Ks from our pitchers.
no options for Rupe
Grant was kind enough to clear that up though AdMo said he already did but i couldn’t find the quote over at DMag.
So, it seems, Rupe was really already one of the 25 since the end of last season. who knew?
Eyre has options so I would imagine he starts in AAA. I think Donnelly will added to the 40 and I think he will be fine eventually – he just needs more innings after his back issue this spring. I like his experience even if he might start off slow. As for Turnbow, I never read that he had an opt-out date to his MiL contract. Whether he does or does not, I think he also needs innings after rehabbing 6 months prior to camp and would not be opposed to getting them in AAA. And, let’s be honest, he’s won’t make the team based on what he’s shown thus far.
Byrd vs Murphy against lefties
One thing I read about Byrd and Murphy is that Murphy hits lefties fairly well, wereas Byrd is about the same lefty vs righty.
hmmm….
Murphy's splits
against lefties weren’t very good.
And in general, Byrd is better than Murphy. As much as I like the Murph, Byrd has been better at the plate in almost every way.
I also think Byrd grades out better defensively.
But... but... but...
Murphy hit a lot of doubles!
by NorCalRangersFan on Mar 17, 2009 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions
Murphy's splits
against lefties weren’t very good in 2008, but in 2007 he hit .400 against lefties.
don’t know his minor league splits though.
Lefty splits or not
In general, Byrd’s numbers are better than Murphy’s.
Byrd gets on base more, doesn’t slug terribly worse than Murph, and has shown more consistent splits the last two years.
Murph does fit into the future better… but if we could sell high on him, get draft compensation for Byrd, and go into the future with Hambone/?? in left, Borbon in center, and Cruz/Golson/Hambone in right… I would be ok with that.
Murphy did OPS 1.071 against lefties in '07
…in 22 ABs
...
Player A 2007: .343/.384/.552 144 OPS+ 46 Games Played
Player A 2008: .275/.321/.465 106 OPS+ 108 Games Played (Big dropoff against lefties)
Player B 2007: 6-1 4.65 ERA 1.34 WHIP 100 ERA+ 81 IP
Player B 2008: 2-3 4.82 ERA 1.839 WHIP 91 ERA+ 56 IP
Boom or bust?
Did Boston get the best of these or are they set to boom again? You obviously guessed they are Murphy and Gabbard. I just wonder if we’ve already seen the best of that pair.
Maude Lebowski: Lord. You can imagine where it goes from here.
The Dude: He fixes the cable?
Murph's Overall
I think Murph overall is in the ballpark of a .280/.330/.480 batter. That’s not horrible.
Problem for Murph is that Byrd seems to be in the ballpark of a .290/.360/.480 batter, with equal or better D.
Which is why I say sell Murph as high as you can, go with Byrd this year, and next year we can figure out how to fit Boggs, Borbon, Golson, and whatever lame FAs are on the market into our outfield with Hamilton and Cruz (if he works out).
Murph is a nice backup to hold onto if Cruz flames out though.
Byrd
Byrd is closer to a .290/.360/.460 and that’s being charitable and hoping that he doesn’t come down to earth and become a .260/.330/.400 hitter he was before he came to texas.
Murph you have pretty much pegged, at least at his upside.
Byrd seems to be a better defender on paper, but Murph looks better in the field, so who knows. 20 years ago, Murph would be an all-star and Byrd would be riding pine.

So does the scoreboard on the left field fence have a net in front of it? I can’t imagine they want baseballs pounding off the board or players running into it. But does a net really prevent a player from doing damage to it or damage to himself?

Although Feldman I see still hits a brick wall when he gets tired.

Eh
It was his first real challenge at 3B, apparently.

Not much of a challenge
It was a weak grounder a couple of steps to his left. He just picked up his glove too soon.

The 4-6-3 of Vizquel, Arias, Smoak didn't work
Hope we don’t see many double plays with those players.

Weak throw by Arias.

Visquel is a "multi mulit Gold Glove winner"
Does that mean he’s won more than one gold glove in a year, multiple times?

Buzz and this other guy aren't really "bad" as far as how they sound
But man can they pump out the hyperbole. Turnbow used to be one of the NL’s premiere closers? C’mon…
Now blogging again (temporarily) at "Hello Win Column".
Good start to the inning for Turnbow though.

Okay, that was pretty freaking impressive.

What do you expect from a former NL premiere closer?
"A hot dog at the ball game beats roast beef at the Ritz"- Humphrey Bogart
Lemme guess
all on breaking balls? or has his FB command returned to the Surprise area code?
Well, he didn't miss the strike zone with anything, according to gameday
But I think all his out pitches where breaking balls. The two called strike 3’s where anyway.

OT- spring training records
I usually could care less about spring training records, but the Astros…really? 1-14
They are a second half team

Nice win
encouraging outing from Turnbow
"A hot dog at the ball game beats roast beef at the Ritz"- Humphrey Bogart
Yep
Just one outing, but maybe Turnbow has something worth trying to harness after all.

Looks like the bullpen
has a chance to be pretty solid, circa 2004

Spring optimism
"A hot dog at the ball game beats roast beef at the Ritz"- Humphrey Bogart
Well, both a chance to be solid and a chance to be really bad
It could go either way, really. If none of Turnbow/Donnelly/Guardado step up and CJ still isn’t healthy it could be an adventure trying to get to Fx2.
Now blogging again (temporarily) at "Hello Win Column".
What about...
Mad Dog? He’s looked good from what I understand.
"A hot dog at the ball game beats roast beef at the Ritz"- Humphrey Bogart
Yeah, he has
We’re still gonna need another pitcher or two who can shut people down in the 7th/8th innings, but between him, Moscoso and Diamond there’s potential for the bullpen to improve this year even if it starts off really shitty.
Now blogging again (temporarily) at "Hello Win Column".
If CJ isn't healthy?
you mean from his staff-infected blister that threatens to eat through his hand leaving him with only a single digit, the pinkie, no less? Or do you mean the syphilis that is slowly driving him insane, as evidenced by his increasingly erratic blog posts about Ron L Hubbard?
Well
“Healthy” includes mentally, too. As Grant intimated the other day, I’m kind of concerned about how he’s communicating (or rather not communicating) with his coaches right now.
Now blogging again (temporarily) at "Hello Win Column".
one outing?
he’s got a 1.80 ERA on the spring…how many times has he been on the mound, or…how many innings?
it’d be pretty nice if he and Madrigal provided some above-average relief for this team

Well, this is the first time I've actually seen (well, heard, really) him look extremely sharp
With his control and his economy of pitches. Not that I’m a qualified judge of such things, but this is the first time he’s actually really impressed me.
Now blogging again (temporarily) at "Hello Win Column".
His action this spring:
2-28: 1 inning, 1 hit, 0 walks, 1 K, 0 earned runs
3-5: 1 inning, 0 hits, 3 walks, 2 Ks, 1 earned run
3-9: 1 inning, 0 hits, 0 walks, 0 Ks, 0 earned runs
3-14: 1 inning, 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 K, 0 earned runs
3-17: 1 inning, 0 hits, 0 walks, 3 Ks, 0 earned runs
1 bad outing, 1 absolutely dominant outing, 3 more very good outings…I could get used to this

Not so encouraging
for Feldman
"A hot dog at the ball game beats roast beef at the Ritz"- Humphrey Bogart
Don't agree
Until he tired in the 5th, he was doing pretty well. Its spring training and he’s not stretched out yet. I’m actually pretty encouraged by his start today.
by NorCalRangersFan on Mar 17, 2009 5:55 PM CDT up reply actions
yeah I missed the first 4
so maybe I spoke to soon, just would have liked to see him finish strong.
"A hot dog at the ball game beats roast beef at the Ritz"- Humphrey Bogart
He had a problem with hitting a wall late in his starts last year too
The fact that it happened in the 5th instead of the 6th or 7th is probably because he’s not stretched out. Just one outing, but looks like his ball still flattens out in a big way when he gets tired (or something).
Part of the reason I don’t think he’s got much chance of sticking in the rotation long term.
Now blogging again (temporarily) at "Hello Win Column".
I agree
But wouldnt he look good as a bullpen long man, swing man, spot starter, etc
Yep, I think that's his ideal role
On a team that competes for the division/WS.
Now blogging again (temporarily) at "Hello Win Column".
I don't know
I think hes gotten into a rhythm as a starter. He’d be a perfect #5 starter on a championship caliber team if he could throw 180-200 innings with a 4.50-4.75 ERA. In the playoffs you don’t use your #5 starter so we wouldn’t be worried about him there
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Yep
Mid 3’s ERA up until his last inning last year. Over 15 in that last inning. Hopefully by the regular season Washington will realize when to pull him better.

OT: USA vs PR
I’m watching it on the MLB.tv Beta viewer and have to say that the vidoe quality is very nice, and according to the player I’m only seeing video quality at about 1/2 its possible quality.
Plus, it seems to use a protocol/port that is not blocked by my company’s firewall (yet).

Ruh-roh...
another failure for the US on the horizon.
5-3 PR, top of the 9th. US to hit in the bottom.
