Ummmm...

From the 2009 Rangers preview by the Sporting News:

2. Did Texas err by forcing Michael Young to third base?
All Young did last season was win a Gold Glove at shortstop. Because Young relocated once before -- he was a second baseman until the 2004 season -- his transition should be smooth. But it could be a rocky road for rookie shortstop Elvis Andrus, who never has played above Class AA and wasn't a polished defender there (32 errors in 109 games in 2008). This pitching staff doesn't need to get four outs per inning. However, the Rangers are intrigued enough by Andrus' bat (.295 average last season) and legs (54 steals) to shuffle their infield.

Words fail me.

very quality writing

You have to love this line about the pitching prospects.

“There are some young arms on the horizon, but they probably won’t help in 2009 — or maybe ever.”

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Feliz or Holland will help the Rangers sometime in their career.

That's just the sort of wide-sweeping generalization one makes when he doesn't know what he's talking about. . .

. . . and really has nothing useful to contribute but has to write something anyway.

“Albert Pujols could be the MVP, and, on the other hand, he could have a down season.”

“The Cowboys could win the Super Bowl. Or, possibly, someone else could.”

I thought about writng a reply on hthe SN wedsite

but it just isn’t worth it.

Very little research was done on this it seems. No mention about an improved defense. The whole thing just confounds me

And to think

My thought exactly

40 years ago you could sit in an umpire’s room in silence … everyone in there was reading the Sporting News. However, batting average and RBI were the currency of the time. I don’t think I’ve seen an issue since (?) well, it was before they changed format and appearance, must have been in the middle 1980’s. Disclaimer – I have no idea how out of touch they are, but this item as posted takes all the wrong views. Sigh.

Unfortunately

It looks like they still analyze baseball the same way they did 40 years ago.

thank you!

i have been saying all along that michael young is a plus defender and that andrus is up here for his bat not his defense! all of you disagreed, but i got the sporting news to back me up!

Don't forget...

…the next sentence…

He has hit well this spring but hasn’t down much running. In case the Andrus experiment fails, Texas signed 11-time Gold Glove winner Omar Vizquel.

Man, even when they're trying to say the right thing they're wrong

Check this out. And for grins, see how many errors/gaps you can find in their Texas depth chart.

Even Yahoo sports has better insight than these goons.

I should probably make an addendum to my thoughts on the first link

The guy’s not really entirely wrong, it’s just that he spends three quarters of his column spouting about Texas’ terrible history as a franchise, and then provides literally zero insight as to who or what the apparently faceless prospects that the farm system is stocked with are, while at the same time giving credit for the rebuilding process to Tom Hicks (although he does mention JD, I’ll give him that much) and acting like Millwood and Padilla will be fronting the rotation going forward.

Aside from that he’s got the correct idea, he’s just done a really, really poor job of presenting it.

BP has that

same kind of rehashed tripe in their TX write-up. The guy starts off the bit by writing about the fall of the Byzantine empire for half a page. Ugh.

wait, “rehashed tripe” – I think I saw that dish on No Reservations….

by Goyogringo on Mar 19, 2009 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions

wow

Where to start? Lets see if I can name all the mistakes

1. No LF
2. Young playing SS
3. Blalock playing 3B
4. Sosa at DH
5. Cat at 1st
6. Melhuse backing up Salty
7. Our SP depth chart goes from number 7. Kris Benson to number 9. AJ Murray to number 21. Eric Hurley. Apparently, the Rangers rotation is so bad that they don’t deserve an 8th starter on the depth chart and once you get to double digits, we’re just giving up on the next 11 guys.

And I won’t even start on the absent pitchers and the RP they have in our bullpen.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Poor Feldman

He couldn’t crack the top 21 rotation, or get a spot in the bullpen.

What about:

Acknowledging Davis and Byrd in our last 4 lineups and then leaving them off the depth chart?

by BuckyB on Mar 19, 2009 1:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Well considering that is Richard Justice

an OK writer in Houston, I am not surprised. I guess SN could not afford a guy from the Dallas area to write it.

Actually, this might be better than some of the options here in DFW. Think how bad it would be to read a Galloway version of this.

omg

you have to be surprised. A 6 yr old with down syndrome could make a more accurate depth chart of the Rangers.

It is an untapped demographic, after all.

All they have to do is work in Star Trek catchphrases too, like “Engage!” for every homer, or “Warp Nine!” when a reliever touches 95.

At least we're not Anaheim...

They either have real problems or are taking a radical approach.

I expect their pitching staff to all go down with hamstring injuries while pulling triple duty pitching, covering first, and batting in the DH hole.
