John Mayberry & the Phillies
Searched the site and didnt see this posted anywhere yet. So if it has been, and I just missed it, let me know and Ill delete.
There was an article posted on the SportingNews.com over the weekend about JMJ's outstanding spring training with the Phillies and his chances of making the opening day roster. see link below
http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=527006
I briefly caught the Hardline discussing the article yesterday evening. Their discussion focused heavily on whether this would be a significant black mark on JD if JMJ makes the Phillies roster and has a productive year for them.
I found this to be silly for a number of reasons. But thought it was interesting nonetheless.

Because the Hardline is the foremost authority on the Rangers.

It's spring
and Mayberry isn’t that good. The phils already have Victorino, Werth, and Ibanez with Geoff Jenkins and Matt Stairs likely to be in the mix. I don’t see Mayberry getting playing time in philly, they’ll probably option him to AAA and maybe give him a shot.

sounds like
a bunch of lefty’s and older guys, I would probably look at JMJ before Stairs with the already lefty heavy lineup

meh if he has a ludwick or hafner-esque renaissance in his production/value
there will always be some naysayers who will want to blame daniels. i think some media types/fans have had it in for him for a long time and will see any moves he makes through their own personal bias against him. but objectively i think most have agreed it was a good move. there really wasnt going to be a spot for JMJ on this team, and we still dont know that he can do anything in the major leagues. at least golson provides a little bit of a different specialty that could potentially be of value to us, as well as a slightly higher ceiling, if he can manage to overcome the strikeout issues.

With the reports we've received on Golson so far this spring it already looks like a win for us
No matter if Mayberry makes the ML team or not. He sure wouldn’t have made our ML team with the glut of COF we have already.

Mayberry
has hit for power this spring, but then, so have Jason Lane and Brett Gardner. The numbers more indicative of his approach remain the same. .275 BA, .315 OBP, 16:2 K:BB.
He is who he is.

Look at the things he is praised for
Mayberry entered the day hitting .290 in 10 games. No Phillies player has played in as many games or has racked up as many at-bats.
Wow, the manager has written Mayberry’s name on the lineup card more often than anyone else. Mayberry’s a stud.
While Howard leads all big leaguers with four home runs this spring, Mayberry is right on his heels with three
Its amazing that he is able to hit one less HR than Howard in 15 less ABs during ST. As of the moment, Mayberry is now 3 HRs behind the ST leader and his 3 HRs are matched by 30 other guys.
Mayberry is hitting .275/.315/.549 in ST. That’s nice, but nothing spectacular. Golson is hitting .348/.360/.609.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

they are actually pretty similar
in that neither will supplement their averages with many walks, both will hit for power and strike out often. Both are tremendous athletes and both will get more than a cup of coffee in the big leagues, with an upper projection of solid starter and a more likely projection as a 4th OF or platoon guy. The difference is that Golson can play CF. And that is enough of a tie breaker for me.

Golson's ceiling is higher than just a solid starter

I’d never thought of him that way

Mayberry has big power potential
But Golson is the tremendous athlete, by all accounts.

This is a bunch of nothing
These are spring training at bats, and meaningless. Even if Mayberry does alright over there, the trade was not a bad idea, I could not care less about this guy.

and
isn’t Mayberry a guy who starts off hot and fades rather quickly after a promotion anyway?

Once he caps out here
He can go to the Cuban minors and work his way up there then on to Japan and so on.

Is TSN just actively trying to
become the biggest joke in sports media as quickly as possible? They are on quite a roll.

Tomorrow's article
will feature a Rangers minor league system devastated by the trading away of John Danks and the loss of Eric Hurley. Luckily they can trade form their deep corps of 3B prospects to replenish the pitching.

The biggest joke
in sports media is the Hardline. That is, if you consider them sports media. They are unlistenable-they should change their name to The Corby Show. I listened to a few minutes of their discussion on Mayberry and had to turn it off. Idiots…
