More roster moves
Per the S-T blog, the Rangers have sent 7 more guys down, effective tomorrow...
Justin Smoak, Elizardo Ramirez, and Joe Torres have been assigned, and Julio Borbon, German Duran, Greg Golson and John Bannister have been optioned.
Before anyone starts complaining about Torres getting sent down, remember that he's basically been hurt for most of camp and thus hasn't pitched much.

Kind of a disappointing spring for Duran. Some of it has been out of his control: Andrus looking worthy of a roster spot, Vizquel signing, Blalock being able to play 3B, and Arias doing okay. But he didn’t do anything offensively.
yep
I still maintain bringing him up last year and keeping him up was the absolute worst thing we could have done for his development

Agreed
Maybe the message sent back at that time was worth the step back for Duran, but it’s hard to imagine that disrupting his development like that was good for him. Looks like he should be able to retrench in AAA this year, though.

best case scenario for him...
is it hoping that Arias is traded or a bust, Andrus is fine so we drop Vizquel, and Vallejo isn’t ready by year’s end so that he has a chance to win/take hold of the utility IF job? is there any more he could hope for, or we could hope from him, outside of an injury to Kinsler or Young? or will we just end up trading him if he shines in AAA and has no role on this team?

best case for him
is he goes down to AAA and gets somewhat close to his AA numbers and is traded to a team where he can play everyday.

If he met his realistic potential
which I’d compare with a DeRosa style of game and place at something like .270/.340/.430 or maybe a little better, he could be a serviceable 2B/3B/LF, which is a bit different from how Vallejo profiles and very different from how a healthy Arias would profile.
His greatest potential role is as an offensively oriented 2B, and that’s obviously not going to happen here.

Don't think we'd need a DeRosa-like player?
I’d like to believe that every year we’re going to be completely healthy at each of 2B/3B/LF, but if people miss enough games for Duran to get 300-400 PAs in a given year, he could be very valuable, especially in the years before he reaches arbitration and becomes expensive.
Same thought
I don’t recall him being in a ML ST game starting lineup, actually.
But Law’s most recent report on Andrus does not make it sound like he’s locked down starting SS… Maybe I’m reading too much into that.

He will make the team...
realize that all of their other OF options are better.
