Rangers Won’t Add Andruw Jones to 40-Man Roster By Friday

SURPRISE, Ariz. - Rangers general manager Jon Daniels acknowledged the team will decline to add non-roster outfielder Andruw Jones to the 40-man roster by Friday, thus giving the 10-time Gold Glove winner a chance to take free agency.

Daniels said the Rangers would like to keep Jones in camp if he elects not to exercise the escape clause in his contract, but it’s clear he does not have a role on the major league team. He has not started an “A” game in a week. Jones has been playing primarily in minor league games this week.

Meh.

I didn’t really want him added to the roster unless he really impressed, which he hasn’t. Hope sticks around and agrees to go to OKC for awhile though.

yeah

if he was going to show us anything worth while, it should’ve happened by now. I’d rather roll with the 5 we’ve got, and give the first shot at Boggs, Borbon and then Golson if/when Cat is released or somebody goes down with an injury. The future is here for position players now…and will be here soon enough for the pitchers.

Agreed

Plus Boggs, Borbon, and Golson are all on the 40-man anyway, which Jones isn’t.

All that wringing of hands

and gnashing of teeth over an NRI ….

I wonder if some folks feel a little silly.

Why should I apologize?

I didn’t gnash my teeth. I thought the signing was a waste of time but I don’t recall raising a stink about it.

gnashing of teeth

He’s not just an NRI. this is a guy who hit 51 home runs and won an MVP not 3 years ago.

by iblum on Mar 20, 2009 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He is just an NRI

just like Sammy was a few years ago.

At the time you are an NRI, its pretty irrelevant what you did previously. NRI means you can’t get a good major league contract.

id like to see him stick around i guess

but im pretty doubtful at this point that he has or will have anything to offer a big league club. and i was moderately bullish on him when the rumors originally began swirling that we would acquire him. so whatever, i think our outfield will be fine without him

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Mar 19, 2009 6:53 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

let san francisco take him

or arizona

those are teams that SEEM to have a history of taking OLD players (i know he’s not old, but he plays like it)

tampa used to be like that

he did

big time

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

he'd be perfect in SF

all they do is take old position players and try to build them around a young, starry rotation

Arizona has a history of taking old players?

…well besides Randy Johnson that is.

This sucks

Now we won’t be able to get that great 2005 production and trade him at the deadline for another Max Ramirez.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

This is horrible

We’ve put in on the roster and he’s taking time away from our great OF young players!!!!!!

Oh wait….

The one thing

I was optimistic about when he signed was the fact that he is one of the best center fielders, if not the best, of this generation. In fact, he is one of the top defensive center fielders ever. But by all reports, even his defense is sucking this spring so he really is the 2009 version of Sammy Sosa. I think an outfield of Hamilton, Murphy, Cruz, with Byrd backing up has the makings of a good one, with Boggs waiting in the wings if there is an injury.

even with that OF

it seems like a glut.

ideally you want borbon’s defense in there (not much later than all star weekend – knock on wood). Then you’d have hamilton in right on most days and about three people that can bring their own something to the LF/4OF spot.

Toronto will probably want David Murphy in the Halladay deal.

how many and what players would we have to give up to give Toronto for Halladay??

Murphy for Doc straight up

I bet Toronto would do that.

Offer for Halladay

I’d offer Murphy, Zach Phillips, and Richard Bleier :)

borbon

i was never under the impression he was that good on defense

thought i read somewhere that he didnt take great routes to the ball and was well below avg in the arm dept

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

by knockoutking on Mar 19, 2009 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm sure he'll adjust on the routes if that's the case...

the arm, who knows…this is from a draft report on him back in 2007:

His arm is below-average, but should be just enough to play center field as a pro.

and this on his routes

Borbon can flat out catch the ball in center and has big-league skills in the outfield.
Especially with his speed returned, Borbon covers a tremendous amount of ground.

Not sure how he’s progressed or regressed on those accounts, or how accurate of scouting reports they were in college vs. minor leagues and his projections to the majors now…

could at least crush lefties. Not sure Andruw even has one dimension to his game anymore.

pretty amazing

but I’m glad that the rangers took all of 30 AB’s (across A and B games) to make sure.

I wouldn't be surprised

if the weak reports of his fielding hurt him more than anything he did or didn’t show in 30 ABs. It could have also been that they didn’t think he was ready to work hard.

When you are an NRI, you have to bust ass to steal someone’s job. I’m not sure he was.

there’s no way Boras is letting that guy go to the minors. He’s gone.
